Tips for gaining weight

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by MisanthropeKitty, Feb 10, 2008.

  1. What can I add to my girl's diet to help her gain weight? She is currently getting an extra cup more of food than my boys and she is still soo skinny. I heard of giving boiled eggs so I have been giving her one of those a day with her food... any suggestions? I just hate seeing her soo bony all the time.

Maybe add some cottage cheese or yogurt to her feed might help her to gain weight

What's her story? Why is she too skinny to begin with? If she is not doing well with the normal food and exercise, you may want to check with a vet to make sure she's all good. Could it be worms?

Also, what kibble are you feeding her?

ETA: There are tons of ways to add weight to a dog, but you should be careful and do it in a healthy manner.

  4. shes just always been skinny... she doesnt have worms. idk, i mean she weighs 60lbs but she looks bony to me. i see alot of dogs on here that look skinny like her, so im guessing it might be ok? i mean, she's all muscle i just like seeing some "padding" along with the muscle.

ill have to try the cottage cheese... and tomorrow ill take a pic of her so yall can see what i mean.

60 lbs is normally the top end for a female. Do you have any pics you could post? You don't want an overweight dog either, healthy weight looks different from breed to breed.

  6. i guess she is probably fine.... but next to my two boys she just looks soo skinny. i get paranoid and think people look at her and think im starving her os something...

i went and brought her inside a took a few pics but its hard to see what i am talking about...

even tho the pics are now red X's :( , at least the descriptions might help.
no worries mama=she's looking FINE!!! ;) no prominent, pertruding bones...

    edit to add:
i'm glad to hear you've ruled out any health issues=was gunna suggest that.

  9. right now, they are all on purina dog chow because that is all we can afford since i have been out of work since last july... but if yall could see the huge difference in her and my boys... they are fatties (granted, one is neutered) and shes soo "petite" next to them. this isnt the best picture but this is my 10mo boy... hes a monster beside her. thanks for the reassurance suki... if yall think she looks ok then i guess she is fine :)

I dont think she looks like she needs to gain weight. And yeah, compared to the other dogs she might look a little skinny but its because their more on the heavier side.

I don't think she needs to lose any weight, she looks fine to me. I think she would look better on a better diet, so I'd upgrade when you can. The boy looks pretty thick, so she may just look skinny by comparison.

    you're welcome! :)
TRUST me~if you saw some of the fatties that wander, errrr, roll, thru our clinic doors..... ....
i only wish they looked as good as your female does....;)
i would term her as lean. NOT skinny at all.

She looks good to me, ur boy looks like he may be on the verge of bein overweight so u may wanna watch him and from them pics she doesn't look like she's 60lbs, my boy is only about 45 and he looks bigger than her, unless if she's very tall. Never the less she looks good and females are usually smaller anyways

  14. well thanks for the reassurance guys... last time we were at the vet she was 60 pounds... im not sure what she weighs right now. the last time my boy was weighed he was 70 pounds and my neutered male was 65 pounds. i guess i should just be thankful she is healthy and if anyone tells me i starve her ill just inform them shes pure muscle!

This is exactly the problem with society. We see so many dogs who are over-weight, and 9 times out of 10 the owners are obese as well. We have grown accustomed to this and when we see a trimmed, lean dog we automatically assume he is being starved. If your girl is still capable of running around the yard and playing with you, chances are-she isn't starving. I would almost bet you that she gives those boys a run for thier money when it comes to play time, doesn't she?

When people see my dogs, they ask why one in particular is so skinny when some of the others are so "fat". I have to explain to them that he is constantly running the yard/chain spot. He goes non-stop, and he was just genetically pre-disposed to be a lean dog. When they ask wether he is wormy or starved, I explain to them that starved/sickly dogs can't run and jump. They don't have a pretty sheen to thier coat and bright eyes; they aren't alert to what's going on around them, and they damn sure don't have the strenght to pull like they do when they are on the leash. I try to keep a cool head about it, but sometimes LOL, I get tired of it. I usually end with please put your dog on a diet speach.

Kitty, on a final note. I usually tell people to feed what they can afford, but, try your hardest to find something with better ingredients than the Dog Chow. Even Purina Pro Plan is a pretty decent feed in my opinion. It is/will be more expensive, but you'll be able to see the difference pretty quick. She may even put on just a tad more weight, but her coat will definately look a lot better.

  16. thanks i am definitely on the look out for a new food since i know the purina is NOT top notch... i will have to check out the pro plan.

and yes, she does give the boys a run for their money... when shes not killing ger frisbee all day long. now THAT is something i need to get a video of... i usually have to confiscate it from her because she gets OBSESSED with it and will not quit!

Great post. I can def. concur with this statement. I get stopped all the time by people saying that my dogs need some more feed, or that they look too skinny. These are probably the same people that sit at home all day and feed ole "Buddy" a dozen treats an hour. IMO most people identify a fat dog with being heathly. I keep the pups nice & thick, not the mature adults tho.

Well, in the OP's case. I do not see a problem with this female being too skinny at all.
