"Pit Bull" Set On Fire, For Jumping A Fence!

No free legal aid for alleged animal abusers.

The legal aid authorities have refused free representation for a Parow couple who allegedly set their pit bull terrier alight as punishment for jumping a fence.

Bellville Regional Court prosecutor Stefaan Venter informed the court of this development on Friday when Raymond Koegelenberg, 27, and Shirley Geusteyn, 38, appeared before magistrate JB Swanepoel, charged with cruelty to an animal.

The couple face a second charge, relating to their failure to take their bitch, named Tammy, for urgent veterinary treatment after the alleged incident on June 5.

It is alleged they doused a wooden kennel with paraffin, locked the dog in it and set the kennel alight.

The dog died of extensive burns to her eyes, legs, belly and face.

When the SPCA arrived on the scene, they removed the couple's other two dogs, a second pit bull and an Alsatian, which are now in the care of the SPCA.

Privately-funded lawyer Robert van der Linde, who represented the couple, told the court he needed details of the charges before he could consult his clients.

The case was postponed, and Koegelenberg and Geusteyn, who are out on warning, are to appear in court again on September 18. - Sapa

What does out on warning mean? No bail or nothing?

These people are obviously sick, sick, sick people...
They should at least do jail time and NEVER be allowed to own any animals again...or have any kids either for that matter...

Save the money. Lock them in a kennel & set them on fire. If you walk away, you won't even have to hear them scream.....just like they did to their dog.

I really lean toward your solution Suki...and they will NEVER torture another dog that way. So I am not criticising you. It infuriates me also that people could do something like this...

No complaints from me, either, Suki. We are all in the same boat on this one. It makes me sick to my stomach thinking how terrified that poor dog must have been. Rampant, unbridled evil.

Exactly. They should suffer beyond what that poor dog did. The image is haunting me and I wasn't there! How could you live with yourself after doing that?!

Normally I don't read these horror stories, because unless this shit happened closer to where I live, I really can't do anything except get mad. Although before I also read the other post about that poor dog attacked by that axe wielding coward.

It's a damn shame there isn't greater media coverage of this kind of treatment being dished out to our breed by these monsters. That could explain a thing or two to the general public as to why our breeds reputation has basically turned from positive to negative within two decades. Put any breed in the hands of these arse-holes and see what you get. Too bad.

People like this need to be left alone with a few true dog lovers and not just for ten minutes. It truely makes you wonder. Who are the real monsters are in the world? The dogs or the idiots, like these, that get ahold of them.

Dogs attacking humans get into the news. Pits (or dogs thought to be) attacking a person makes national news. But when a pit is brutally tortured or killed its lucky to make the local paper.

Agreed 100%. There should be a public hearing for people like this, which is announced to true dog lovers who attend, with baseball bats. Nah- just bare hands should do it. The sentence should be a simple: You are a free man- the state holds no responsibility for you and you are not worth the taxpayers money in keeping you alive on jailhouse bologna. Your "friends" who have attended this hearing are now free to have their way with you. You may be a free man, but let's see you try and get outta here. Lock the doors, bailif. Now THAT's the power of the people!
