Thanks you, He was 13 and he got heart worms. I was going to have him treated to get it corrected but the vet said he really old and his chances of living (if he made it to the 3rd treatment) were 45%. At $1,000 for the entire treatment, it doesn't seem like good odds. I asked the vet to put him down but they said he wanted to try other things first. I asked him if he was going to pay for it because I just paid $350 for the last treatment and he got pissed at me. I had to put him down myself on vacation from Iraq. It had to be the hardest thing I have ever done in my life.:(
My kills me that my new puppy goes outside, sits where his chain was and looks for him every day. :(

I appreciate it everyone, I really do but it's my fault he's dead. If I were home he would not have had heart worms and I wouldn't have had to shoot him.

Dont beat yourself up, you did the right thing, you didnt let the dog suffer as some might have while hoping the money fell out of the sky.
Doing the right thing doesnt make it any easier on you though ,but just keep the head up

I live in Arkansas in BFE. The mosquitos aren't that bad but it could be better. I needed to get the tear glands in his eyes checked and he started to cough while I was talking to the vet. The coughing wasn't that bad, sounded like he was choking which worried me but the vet asked if I wanted to run a check on heart worms.

KBK thanks and I know I did the right thing but it doesn't make it any easier when you loose the good ones. Sucks when you have to start over. I have to look for another male now that can live up to my expectations. lol

I'm so sorry. That's a very hard thing to do, and it shows you are a strong and kind person.

I would be royally pissed at your vet.

I am really really sorry for your loss....I myself had to put down my previous dog I can only imagine how much more painful it would have been if I had to do it myself instead of the vet. May your Roscoe RIP I can tell you were nothing but a good owner to him.

Thank you everyone, I did what I thought was right. It took me over an hour to bury him and I covered him with rocks to keep the other animals from getting him. I was really pissed at my vet but he was just trying to save him. If I had that kind of money I would have put it in him for treatment but I wasn't going to keep spending money for something that wasn't going to work. I didn't want him to suffer anymore. Thank you everyone for the kind words. I should be getting Roscoe Jr. in a few months. He's not from Roscoe but I know the guy I'm getting him from and he knew Roscoe and said he is setting up a breeding that will give me a puppy to live up to my expectations.

Very glad to hear your friend cares to that extent. I obtained my current girl almost in a similar circumstance. My childhood dog was the dog I had to grip the pain with and make the decision to put him to sleep. During the last two years that I had him though I started becoming very fond of the apbt breed. I told myself my next dog will certainly be an apbt. Well my friend who had my current dog new this and decided to hand her to me a couple of months after my boy passed away. There were 4 other friends of ours he was debating with who to give her to and he choose me. The best gift ANYONE has given me I could never thank him enough until this day.
