Why does everyone want males now days over females?

I am sure you hear so many people boasting about the accomplishments of males but what about the ladies. I think it is much harder to find a female who can produce consitently than a male. Is it this way do to sex blindness in people's minds that males are better game dogs or it is because of money that they can make from studding out a male or better quality dogs in their minds. I have had females that would put it to a male in a blink of a eye and males who get stuck in a pretty smell who wouldn't touch a female unless it is to smell their butt for the most part. Personally for me I prefer female, usually more sound animals, easier keepers and better around the family since I had kids. We have had good males but my females will always be at the top of my list of keepers, even before males but don't get me wrong you need males. There is a good producing male in every state in the USA just about but a good producing female only comes every so often IMO. Talking about really good ones, the ones that are on the levels like the Queen, Honeybunch, Art's Missy, Red Baby and more. What is up with people being ok with breeding a cold female too? This is unfair in the quality of dogs you are going to be producing. How you forgotten that females run the show? Yes their are more male POR/ROM but think of the amount of dogs that were given a better chance than a female because of them being a male but when the females produces or is good legacies are built for decades after their demise.

I like females better. I feel as a man, I have a better bond with the girls and theyre more protective of me, and listen to me better. You need both males and females to carry on, and the genes are split so females are just as important regardless of what these amateurs say.

I like females better as well. I think it comes down to the fact that a good producing female only does good to that owner bc its not often someone will lone their bitch for a breeding. People advertise their males because thats what other people are looking for. The way it finding a good female is the hard part. Its easy to find good studs to breed to. I agree with you tho 100%

Males have it over females in the numbers game. You could conceivably breed a male to a different bitch every couple of weeks and he could be responsible for literally hundreds of pups at the end of a year. A female by contrast could only produce a couple of litters in that time. By sheer numbers alone, I would expect the absolute number of good offspring from a male to exceed that o a female. The percentages might be way down though. People forget that pups get half of their DNA from the mother and the female is very often undervalued in breeding contribution. Also, I would argue that historically males have been the combattants as they invest less time and effort in breeding and females have spent more of their careers as brood bitches rather than sporting participants.

There are a lot of good producing females out there. But they are never for sale. No way can you sell the foundation. Because like I was taught you can always find a good male to breed too. You can't find a good female to breed to.

The ratio of males to females on someone's yard says quite a bit about where their interest in dogs lies. If you are competing with dogs you will have mostly males, no heat cycles, no litters etc. If you breed dogs you will have mostly females.

People are acting like good producing males are a dime a dozen. They are not. They are just as rare as good producing females, it is just that you hear about them more often because they are sometimes at public stud. A great producer of either sex is very rare indeed.

I have never understood the advice to get a good female to start your yard with. All the great thoroughbred race horse farms are based on great stallions. If you have a really great male people will bring you their best bitches to breed and you can keep pups off of them. This way you have access to many great bitches rather than having to go through dozens of them to find that one good producing bitch. Your chances of getting a good producing female for your first bitch are slim to none even if you spend a fortune. Plus, if you base your whole yard off one bitch you are backing yourself into a genetic cul de sac from the get go.

All the great dog yards I have ever known have had multiple good-excellent males at stud. Most ROM males reached that status with other peoples females that were sent to breed to them. Dogs that can produce regardless of what they are bred to are extraordinarily rare. This way you have many different people making breeding decisions and increasing the opportunity for the male to produce. If you are the only one deciding how to breed your dog, chances are you will be wrong as often as right.

Hey Ben I understand where you're coming from but wouldn't that go against the thing most old timers did which is not breeding your best stock to others outside of your camp. It's still hell trying to get good animals from old school dogmen. I don't like giving up pups myself. I've had to learn to give away some here lately. But when I do a breeding I usually plan on keeping every pup I can.

if you look at the history of the breed you will see otherwise. name most any great stud dog and you will see that their offspring "found" their way to the good dogmen. the real players knew who and where the good stud dogs were and by hook or by crook the good dogs ended up with the players more often than not.
remember the name of the game was WINNING, there was no 2nd place red ribbon in the dog game.
what is the most important factor if one wants to WIN in the dog game??
condition the RIGHT dog of course!

give me a good female over a male any day. you don't need a lot of stud dogs just one that clicks. i know lots of dogman that will stud a male but none that will stud a female. fastest way to the track is to buy a fast car. not build it from scratch. if you have good dogs you have options & folks will want to breed to your stock. too much wheeling & dealing amongst friends to really matter imo.
