Yeah doginhold, I was aware a dog wagging its tale doesnt always mean it wants to be friends ;), but I guess you havent had a father in law, who did 3 tours in Nam, and thinks he knows it all lol...
IMO, a Presa would be better suited for people without children. I also knew someone who bred them for awhile, and he was always weary about his children getting around them. Eventually, he got out of them. Definitely a serious man stopper.

I would be a much bigger fan of EBTs if they didn't have them f***ed up heads, lol. It just doesn't look healthy... also heard it limits their vision straight ahead of them.

i haven't read all the replies, but i figured i'd give my two cents of experience with guard dogs. i'm a big fan of the South African boerboel. I have one, my parents have one, my grandad has one. Mine has bitten a creep before that got too close. and tried to bite someone (who happened to be a friend) she didn't know who just tried to walk in my back door. thankfully i was home and caught her collar in the nick of time. but with friends and family that she knows, she is a big mush. she LOVES children and babies especially. but she gets pissed if someone threatens her home. i have to put her in her crate when i know the pest control guy is going to come do maintenance on the house. she's tried to come through the window at him. my mom's boerboel is more mellow, but can get pretty darn pissy when he feels a real threat is close. it's kind of scary how powerful they are. and fast. they look big and slow, but blink and they're on top of you. i like them because they really enjoy being with their family, but can be serious if needed.

that said, they're expensive and big. my female is about 110 pounds, my grandad's male is about 145. and buyer beware! damn BYBs have been ruining them, breeding them for softer temperaments and bigger bodies. also, better make sure the dog you want has generations of health-checked dogs behind it. they're prone to HD and ED. mine are imports from south africa from a long-time breeder.

i'll always have one around for personal and property protection. but i will make sure to get mine from a working breeder who health tests.
