I agree 100%, I don't think that conformation should even be a part in the Zuchttauglichkeitsprüfung in the Doberman, a dog having good conformation means NOTHING and I would tell anyone looking into a Doberman, Rottweiler, GSD, or similar breed to TURN AROUND AND RUN if they see a breeder who does conformation, at all, because competitive conformation is the first step to RUINING a breed.

I am willing to bet that as the popularity of the Malinois rises, the quality of the breed as a whole will decline.

In germany there are some, they are at times few but the ones that are from solid working stock are high performance!

Concerning the Breed clubs it´s unfortunately like this over here (GSD / Rottweiler/ Dobermann)
you have to compete at conformation shows also and if there are slight faults, like a too dark tan, a missing teeth, too heavy, to short too large ears for example or too large in height or too small in heigth you could be the number one working dog but you won´t get a breeding permission by the club, that means if you are breeding this dog anyways the pups won´t get registered and if they please the club will ban you!
Also over here we do have two strains of GSD!!!!! A working strain that at least suffering less by the stupid conformation judges and Hochzucht GDS, that means they aren´t from strictly performance bred stock and the main focus is on conformation!!!!!!

What I don´t understand, you americans have the most unique and versatile breed in the world, that if bred right not even suffer that much from health problems, is suitable for almost every surroundings and could excell in almost every working aspect, the American Pit Bullterrier!

Yet all these Humane Organisations, Governments and PETA Terrorists will extcinct them!

I just can´t understand it as this breed could be used in such great fashion for so many human needs that is barely to compare with other breeds!

Athletic, strong, drivey, trustworthy with humans, eager to work, healthy and quite obedient aswell as intelligent!

Over here the breed is almost extinct and that hurts me pretty much as I do love serious working dogs!

Its unfortunate but there aren't many breeds which aren't affected in some way today by dog shows and humane organizations. One reason is that people think every dog must be a good pet and so they breed out intensity... that's one of the things that happened to the Doberman in the USA! Of course another is people thinking that certain sports (dog fighting, dog racing, hare coursing, hunting, you name it) is immoral/cruel and so they ban it. And yet the worst of all is conformation/bench showing.

It's hard to find good dogs nowadays.

  8. I thought the parameters were for a short haired animal. Texas can get real hot.

Not only a short haired animal for the Texas heat, but just a guard dog. First differentiate a guard dog from an attack dog, there is a big difference. I dont think the OP is looking to compete with the animal either. And from what I have seen, the quality of Dobermans has increased over the last 15-20 years, of course thats if you are selective of where you get your stock (just like a game dog). As far as lifespan, the rule is usually the larger the breed, the shorter the lifespan.

I would definitely stay away from the "fad" colors in the Dobermans though, like Blue's, and especially the more rare white ones.

  10. Not sold on the doberman. Have been around quite a few over the years and was not impressed with what they brought to the table as a watch dog. Have seen well bred, large, male and females that were suspect at watching the home. Also, the last thing that they would be good for was stopping someone with bad intentions on there mind.

Also, have seen what a Corvino bred 55 pound pit can do to a 100 pound dobi. This was when the Dobi had the pits muzzle and head in its mouth first. Can you say air lift to save its life?

Screw a guard dog peon. Just put pictures of yourself all over the property. Even if it don't work to get rid of people. Atleast it'll work to get rid of rats and mice lmmfao.

Again,,, differentiate between a guard dog vs attack dog. Guard dogs put out a lot of warning, are ment to appear intimidating, actively "patrol", bark loudly at strangers, or trespassers, and then if all that fails, bite. Attack dogs, well lets just say they usually dont give much warning, and go straight in for the bite. That could be a bit libelous for owners. There are much better attack dogs than Dobermans, like a Rottie.
Come on Lakewood, are you really going to talk about what a bulldog did to a Doberman???? My only response to that, is why wasnt someone trying to break that shit up??? Bulldog against most any other breed is cruel in my book. Hope it was really an accident.

Unfortunately, it is. It was rumored that the dog who assisted the soldiers in apprehending/killing Osama Bin Laden was a Belgian Malinois. Now everybody wants their own Belgian Malinois to keep as a housepet and eventually ruin the breed and turn it into the present-day stocky, barrel-bodied Labrador Retriever.

Definitely. I knew someone who owned a female Dogo and she was huge, loud and mean as fuck lookin. She could definitely scare off someone who didn't know her.
I can't see anybody willingly hopping into a yard with a Dogo Argentino, and remember.. those dogs were bred/are used to apprehend vicious hogs. A human wouldn't stand a chance if they tried messing with one.

Icepick I am with Lakewood the Dolbi's I have saw were not impressive...LOL but I agree with you on one thing a bulldog against most any other breed is indeed unfair.NO CONTEST!

  17. Yes it was. It was one of those deals where a pit had to be placed that day or be lost forever. It was unavoidable. Your right pick, it should have never happened.

I'm with Icepick on the rotties bro. Live in an inner city myself and have been considering the same thing.

Yeah Icepick has a point. I would go for a large, intimidating dog breed. A smart person wouldn't break into a house with a large dog snarling and barking at them.. but if they do and get bit.. well, maybe they shouldn't have trespassed into someone's property with a snarling dog. :P

  20. Problem with a rott is the hair. It gets real hot in Texas. Also, not familiar with the breed but cannot see on covering a ton of ground in a day.
