Yesterday afternoon my husband and I had our two dogs put down. Maximus & Cybil were Rotti x Pitt. They were everything to us. We got them 5 1/2 years ago when they were 8 weeks old. They were the last two of the litter and they needed a home. Their owner (who should never own an animal) was going to hit them over the head with a hammer. We couldn't let it happen so my husband brought them home with the intention of taking them to the S.P.C.A. We already had a dog. Cody, a Boxer x Pit and she had always been the "Queen". We thought at her age of 12 it was unfair to bring a new dog into our or should I say her home. However as soon as we got them out of the truck it was love. Cody became "Grandma" and kept the two tykes in line. I think she enjoyed having them around. It put a little spring in her step. We lost Cody later that year and the two kids stepped into her role with ease. Unfortunately our neighbours didn't have the same affection for our dogs and after several false accusations to our local animal control and a petition our beloved dogs were deemed dangerous. I really do wish people would open their eyes about Pitts and other breeds like them. It would be nice to see them excepted into the main stream of doggy culture.
After the better part of five years of the dogs being locked up 24 hours a day we couldn't take it any longer. Sure the dogs were happy. They loved us and we loved them. But they weren't dogs, they were prisoners. Cybil had already undergone three Cruciate surgeries and her hips were shot. Maximus was tipping the scales at 83lbs (that was after loosing 10lbs) and despratley deeded to run. They were both getting more frustrated with the passing of each day. Since we live on a farm we were able to sneak them out to the back field as often as we could to have a run around but that was generally when it was dark. Just to be sure that nobody would see them. It was the toughest decision we will ever make in our lives. When we put Cody down, she had cancer. We had no choice. But these were perfectly healthy dogs, physically anyway. My husband and I just had our first child and the dogs loved her. She enjoyed them too. She would ride Maximus around the kitchen, with us holding her of course. They watched over her from the time she was conceived. They protected me so much while I was pregnant. I think they new before I did. I'm glad we got to be together as a family for a little while.
We are having them cremated together. They came into this world together and that is the way they will stay.
My Maximus, you will continue to guard me from harm as you always did and Cybil, you are still and always will be Daddy's little girl.
    Forever in our hearts,
    Dad, Mum & little sis.

Thank you for your thoughts everybody. Suki, the last thing I wanted to do was put my dogs down but we were there whole life. Because of sercumstances they led a very sheltered life and it would have been crule for me to give them away. Besides because of the bylaws they would of led the same life no matter where they were. I'm sure that may sound strange to some people but these dogs would have died for us. I feel as though a part of me has died now that they are gone. I even filled their water bowl for them lastnight. Crazy huh?! Thanks again.
