There is a great article over at the blog "The Science Dog" that investigates the science behind the notion that small dogs are yippy, overly excitable, nippy and untrained brats. As it turns out, owners of small and toy breeds...

I've found most owners of very small dogs to be yippy, overly excitable, nippy and untrained brats that were usually people that I did not want to associate with!

i find this to be very true. I tend to think owners of small dogs get them b/c they believe they require less work. They are less engaged, exercise less, are less likely to train their dog, and are more likely to ignore/accept poor behavior because it is less threatening than if a large dog exhibited unwanted behavior. Basically, i dislike small dogs and 98% of their owners cause they are little bitches

^ but that's the difference, you work with them. I believe small dogs CAN be great dogs. It's definitely possible, but sadly not probable. I have a roommate with a 5lb rat terrier/chi mix and it has ZERO training. It does nothing but bark at NOTHING non stop, i can't, i just can't. I need to move!

I've had 2 Jacks, 2 Fells, and a Jadg(hunt crazy b!tch). They were big dogs in a little body that had a job to do and worked hard to do it. Deff. not part of the little dog syndrome !

I love patts and jacks,,,patts can be straight suicidal on game,,,jacks are so smart they live to hunt another day.Jacks will listen to you where patts are in the killer zone.Jadgs are great hunters but way to YAPPY for me and high strung,,,a patt has enough bull in them there not as yappy and can calm down like a bulldog when nothing is go on.The loyalty of these little hunting terriers are 2nd to none.I never recomended these dogs to anyone not even a jack.It takes the right type to own these dogs they are different.

It can depend on many factors like the type of breed , owners and the individual dog himself.

That article is probably geared more toward the toy/lap dogs that are bred only to be PETS. The 2 main factors involved are the owners who tend to SPOIL/BABY there toy dog there fore encouraging that type of negative bad behavior. The other factor is that the toy dogs tend to be INSECURE due to there small stature. When people see a yappy excitable nippy toy terrier the inexperienced associate that behavior as being brave/bold when in fact its the opposite as its just a bluff to hide there insecurities.

Its funny to me how people use the word SCIENCE to answer these simple questions instead of good ol fashion COMMON SENSE. LOL
