Yesterday I had a " conversation" with a partner of mine who tried to convince me the "best" dogs can't be found in the states. Now if you know me then you know I had to strongly disagree. Below were my points. Comments and opinions are welcomed.

    1. The term best is subjective
    2. There is no way to know who is the best of the best worldwide let alone country to country.. Etc
    3. You can only evaluate your best comparatively with what's available to you
    4. How can you say you competeted with the best when there may be better that are unavailable to you
    5. Even my best to best is limited to subjection and availabilities
    6. Not everyone who has good hounds make it known let alone publicized hunt details

only way to claim the best is if you can make available for that weight to the world.. I agree best available to you, folks will say best over seas but over seas guys still come to US to get dogs. Then you see a known dog from US go over there and win and vice versa.. You win some you lose some, best is an Ego word. It can and will forever remain debatable..

Yep we agreed to disagree on the point. Most of what he based his argument on was from secondhand accounts. So I told hearsay is just hearsay until it ain't.

My goal as a breeder is to leave the breed better than I found it. The notion that I would breed the best dogs in the world faded 10 years in. I know im kinda slow lol. But now stack the deck to give my dogs a fighting chance against all odds. If my friend was honest with himself he would have to agree that that's all the best of us can do no matter what we say.

another thought provoking post YOUNGLION.I would say the best is the best to us , what we indivdually like and are looking for.The more we learn the more we Know nothing.I accept who my mentors say are the best and make my own
accesments on the individuals i encounter.THE BEST IS WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD,screw others opinons unless its based on an honest accesment from someone who knows evan if you agree to disagree.

In one compacity or another I have been evolved with these creatures over half my life. For me not having put out garbage liter after garbage liter is more important trying to make a name for myself or create a family. Some might say you been at these dogs a minute and have nothing really to show. I say quality over quantity is becoming a lost goal. Before I had my first mentor sure I put dogs together but I wouldn't call it breeding. Thankfully I had some one sit me down, question my motives , and help school me. Up until then I did the best I could with the misinformation from the misguided. My first mentor was the one who instilled the principle of purposeful breeding and is why I stopped putting dogs together for years and became a sponge and wall fly. The crazy thing is after years of learning from him and other old timers he gave me a book. It was called BREEDING FOR DUMMIES. lol Out all the literature he shared from journals, gazettes, mags and books it was the lesson behind the gesture that I took away.

Hell I than posted more this month than I have in years. That aint not good.lol

One must remember that the dogs exported internationally originated in the US.

It can also be a question on who is breeding the best dogs, once dogs go to foreign countries
and prove to be true or even here at home, key breedings need to be made to continue that success.

Another aspect is the owner and his means, his dedication to put his hounds in the very best situation. Money
And a very dedicated team dictates how far a hound will go as a whole. Very rare to find a one man team. There teams putting out winning litters with multiple champs. Put them same litters in different hands and you will get totally different results. Just like breedings are man made, the selection and dedication of a team also is hand made.

Best can and is most certainly used as a ego point... HOWEVER... Best is available to us and through us through the best we can do. I do believe for each of us there is a good better and best decision in breeding. It boils down to breeding for a family of producers or breeding for a dog, or breeding with no real mind in it. Believe ya'll know what Im saying. For the guy looking for just the right mix of the right dog, there is a good better and best decision, and for the family breeder the same.... and for the guy who doesnt really know what he's doin but swears hes got game he definitly has a good better and best choice to go to. YOUR ABSOLUTELY right it is SUBJECTIVE(to opionion, cost, region, etc). Thats an honest statment that doenst mean there is no truth in good better and best choices in breeding dogs. Its a mathmatical puzzle..

The best is what your own eyes can see and judge. We can get dogs from 6 continents if we want and we have sent dogs to these 6 as well, but we're relying on someones else's word and standards or ped. Just like almost everyone, we made the mistake of paper chasing on the internet and doing ped math, that doesn't equal wins. If we are going outside the yard it's something we have witnessed hunt and seen with our own eyes, the ped is secondary. But in the USA the disadvantage is for the most part the huge international conventions do not exist any longer. So you can see what the world has to offer from a 20 hunt show, and if you like something try to add it or buy that particular animal. And another advantage is being close to the border, so you can choose from the best of 2 countries, we don't care if it says made in USA or Mexico, but seeing is believing.

That makes sense, and it would be nice to be in a position to base your selective breeding program on real evidence!

Where did ANY OF US come from in the first place? We're all of origins from everywhere. Does that make what WE have produced any less American made? No. The cycle of productivity may vary with the movement of dogs...............But the man made quality you have as Brits at this time, and who is responsible for your having it......HAS NOT.
