My understanding of them is thety are a night mans watch dog. They are monsters. They are goog for protection for sure. That training method where the dogs grab arms and disarm guns and take down people of a threat to them or their master. My Neighbor has a line he has been breeding for some years, His are pit/cane corso, rot & neo. They looked good until he added the neo. He is also plagued with skin problems and the dogs look like shit if you ask me. Not my cup o tea. I have had to chase them off my yard, cause they are scared of me, but if aything ever happened to the a small childern - - - -My neighbor whoul know exactly what I would intend to do. He does his best to keep them put away and not let them roam. I know I have a couple dogs that would tag the shit out of his big ass if he came at me or my family.

I understand what you are saying woody but wouldnt someone rather just get a breed of dog that is already known for and specializes in protection/guard work instead of trying to create one?

When I hear the word Bandog first thing that comes to mind is Presa Canario which is sort of like a strain of bandog. lol

in the mid 90's i had a roommate that had a bandog as well as a doberman. both were smart, fast, and natural protectors. but one had a hell of alot more power than the other....it wasnt about creating a new bred with him, just keeping a few serious dogs that would protect his plants LOL

agreed, theyre not what id call a great dog for the inexperienced

  6. Man, that dog is somethin serious... isnt this how the apbt came about though? through breeding to the current animal? Im just asking so don bash me but wasnt that how the dog originated, by being bred for a specific purpose?

  7. the book says when you breed male mastiff to female pit bull you get a vastly different animal than if you breed male pit bull to female mastiff. does anyone know more about this? what are the differences? and what causes it? it looks like a good book

When game keepers of England wanted a true man-stopping dog they crossed the bulldog with the mastiff, the original bull-mastiff.(much like a bandog). There's something to be said for a fresh cross breed. A favourite, tough and cheap cross breed in Australia for pig and scrub cattle catching is the bull terrier/blue cattle dog cross.(no better than a APBT of course but much easier to come by.)

Bandogs in Australia are sold under the name "American Mastiff".

Kimbo is a badass for sure!!! MFB have some awsome dogs..

A bandog should be a manstopper, a dog no man could fight off...a mali and some gsd can and have been fought off as their size lets them down. I'd like to see someone getting away from a 160lb beast that wants them dead.

im sure these dogs would be a nightmare for a tresspasser, but like someone already said i wouldnt choose any breed any breed that even resembles a pitbull, if i needed a serious dog to keep out undesirables i would just get myself a german rottie! them damn dogs range anywhere from 100-150 lbs anyways, and are bred for guard work!

the name bandog or "bandogge" comes from the words bondage or bandage meaning to tie up or to restrain . in short these dogs were actually medium sized mastiffs which chained or tethered (wherever)they were a ferocious animal and had the dont mess with me attitude or your fucked ! they were (are) manstoppers , property guardians par excellance . i think if you were up to no good and came across one or more of these ,you would know that you were in the shit ! top dogs ..

the original bandogge .died out due to changes of one sort or another . they were ferocious full stop ,hence the name they had to be chained up . these were killers ! i cant really speak for the modern ones ,but i can only assume that dr semencic was trying to reproduce these ferocious dogs the best way he could with modern ingredients. i wouldnt have thought that he was trying to better the game bred dogs in the mix rather than up the ante of the show bred mastiffs . in short they were just ferocious .

dr carl never bred bandogges and was a known exaggerator in his books with lots of hype and untruths being relayed to him by the folks he thought were trustworthy..
you are unlikely to find a 160lb bandogge that can do a proper job of work and most would consider a 120lb dog a large animal in the modern bandogge world.
there are a good number of breeders worldwide that are in multi generation bandogge programmes with dogs that are fully tested in terms of work and health screening etc and as such are not a mutt per se,,just a recreated mastiff with drive..

Not all forms of man work are the same. The bandog should NOT be compared to patrol dogs. It is a dog for a different purpose. Patrol dogs are often bred to work in prey and rank. Bandogs should work in prey, defense, and fight...but not rank.

The reason for this temperament difference is suitability for a family setting. NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND (IMO) would want a rank driven dog with their family. Rank = liability as rank motivates a dog to challenge others in the pack. This is often acceptable in a patrol dog as it makes a dog easy to train when dealing with amature trainers...but it is NOT acceptable for family settings. That is why the bandog should have a submissive temperament WITHIN the pack, but not to those OUTSIDE the pack.

According to Semencic the modern Bandog was bred to create a bigger, stronger pit bull that would dominate any dog fight. Rather than just breed large pitbull to large pitbull it was shortcutted by breeding pitbull to Neopolitan or English mastiffs. Athough Bandog owners loved to brag about how many pitbulls their dog had slain it was proven time and again that when best was matched to best against pitbulls in the 50-55lb range the outcome was nearly always the same. At best the 150lb bandog would dominate the fight for the first 20 minutes, having done everything to kill the little pitie and failed it now ran out of stamina and gameness, wouldn't scratch and just wanted to go home. Meanwhile the pittie was just warming up and ready to go.Because the Bandog failed at it's intended purpose of being the ultimate fighting dog, it reinvented itself of being the ultimate guard dog.
