You have some nasty guest there. I see black widows every now and then. I guess anything is better than those damn brown recluses.

  6. I have two black widows at my well rock. I guess thats what happens when you live in the country and surrounded by trees. I here those recluses pack a bad bite.

Agreed, Widows are only really dangerous to the very young or the unhealthy elderly. But they can and do cause severe abdominal cramps and muscle spasms.
Where as the Brown recluse "although rarely fatal" can causes severe necrosis "death" to the surrounding muscle and tissue of the immediate bite area. This causes severe pain and permanent ugly scaring of the infected area. Where I live Black Widows are every where. In fact I expect to find one or two every time I turn over a dog house, water bowl, or floor pot. I am sure I have dozens in my garage and yard right now!
But I do not believe I have ever seen a Recluse at my residence.

Most don't see them until its too late and they've already been bit. Hence the name recluse. We got them but I've never seen one. A lady last year down the road from my folks got bit in her face by one. Big chunk of cheek missing from her face now. Them mofos will phuck you up good.

^all depends on the person. I got bit above my right eye, i was lucky and didnt have any necrosis...but i also performed minor surgery on myself. My sister in Colorado got bit on the cheek- required some surgery.
Nasty bastards any way you look at it

Yeah, the bad rep that most spiders get is the downside. They are beneficial to the environment, even the villains of the species. I can sort of tolerate them a bit. I mean....I already keep over 25 species of tarantulas, and 15+ species of scorpions. So, they don't really freak me out. I find them very fascinating....I guess to each their own lol.

Bump ...I thought I would bring this thread back up.We have had a really bad time in our area with spiders this year.I have had 2 dogs bit and I thought we might share some more info on how to get rid of these nasty bugers. We had a bad year for love bugs and I was thinking thats why spiders are so bad .The love bugs were worse than they have been in a few years.Anyone else having spider problems? I have been using some poison but nothing has been a sure fire cure.Today I tried Raid Bug Barrier and I will post the results in a couple weeks.

I have about 6 different species that are all over the damn place. I use several pesticides for them but it barely puts a dent in their populations. They dont bother the dogs and i dont believe any of them are poisonous. They do however keep down the fly and mosquito explosion this year.

Lol well AGK these bastards I got bite and I got Black Widows and other species.I useed some pretty heavy stuff and it suppose to be good for a year. But it wasnt just for spiders fleas, roaches, worms, spiders etc..And it didnt do much for spiders so today I went back and used Raid Bug Barrier and I got my fingers crossed .But man I got it all posionous snakes, spiders, ticks, fleas, mesquitoes u name it lol.But now I have only saw one poisonous snake in my yard in the last 10 yrs knock on some wood 4 times. But I have some king snakes which will hunt poisonous snakes down and eat them.I have never saw it but thats what I am told.So I hope my king snakes are doing thier job and its not just my good luck.

We got a a few fruit trees and grapes so spiders are all over them and inside the house as well. Most are common household spiders although I do get bit by wolf spiders year round while I sleep every now and then. There are black widows outside but they like the shady damp areas like under the house so don't bother me. I have to say they do keep ants, flies and mosquito population down and out of the house for which I'm thankful.

The best way to cut down on spiders is to cut off their incentive to be there. Eliminate as much standing water as possible, except for fresh clean water. Organize and haul away piles of wood, metal trash. Get rid of all weeds and useless vegetation. Clean all used surfaces and varnish any wood in use. Get rid of food sources and areas for them to breed and live.

It won't get rid of every spider and this is easier said than done but the more messy and over-grown an area is the more spiders, snakes, etc. it attracts.
