prolly cuz thats not an activity where you wanna "do it yourself", as far as teaching goes anyway.

Schutzhund should be done with reputable trainers who know what to do and evaluate a dog's temperament to see if they can handle this sport. It is NOT for a tough guy who wants his dog to bite. There's a LOT of discipline in it and a LOT of work.

Definitely not much information on the internet specfically addressing APBT, and I am pretty positive there is not a reputable trainer in the WORLD that would recommend DIY Schutzhund training.

Do us all a favor and pick another breed to teach to put teeth to human flesh. P.S. I dont wanna hear all the pro- shlutzhound B.S. The apbt isnt the breed for protection sports.

I have talked about this subject many times with my wife. I have raised apbt's for a long time and have trained and know people who train in the SPORT of schutzhund. I'm still on the fence with this. MOST dogs who strickly do schutzhund training and trails will only bite a sleeve and bark at the person wearing it. Schutzhund is a sport to evaluate the dogs working ability. Seeing as the dogs are trained to bite the sleeve I lean toward it being ok but cant see telling everyone to go out and do it.

Well this is y I asked lol I didn't think a game pit would be good for it cause it was not bred for that purpose, but what happens when one takes a gamebred dog and sticks it in another sport with another task? Will it excel? Now what if u took a dog bred for schutzhund and stick his ass in the box? Will it get its ass whooped or kill?

The APBT, although not bred fot the sport, can and will excel in it. Like shadowwolf stated, it is not for every DOG. Schutzhund is defitnantly not a protection sport, even though that is an aspect of it, thats not what its about. For someone to take an APBT and "control" their drive, let alone pick one that will excel in the sport, I think that its great for the breed to be used in a positive way.

    Shout out to Performance kennels!

Thanks, Mac 11! Another person who uses APBTs for Shutzhund and would be a phenomenal person to speak to is Howard Burgess. Leri Hanson has done French Ring and Mondio as well.

There is a DVD out called "The American Pitbull Terrier", I rented it from the library. In the DVD, they talk about the AKC, UKC, and even the ADBA shows. Another portion of the DVD has protection aspect and the pro's and con's of such. There is a dog on that DVD named Capone, who is the number one APBT in North America in the French Ring, and is Titled III in Schutzhund. Any fancier of the sport would be impressed with said accomplishments and the dog.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, anyone who thinks an APBT should not do schutzhund is ignorant to what the sport is about. The dog is going after the sleeve not the human.

This is the site where you will find all of the people who have titled APBTs in the sport. As far as Schutzhund dogs go we do not deal with iffy temperaments like some folks are willing to deal with. Rocksolid is the olny way the temp should be in this breed but others have let it go for looks and other stuff.

Also when I go to visit some of our most notable dogmen they all are saying the same shit about the APBT doing dog sports. By the time we leave they are trying to give us a dog to title for them because they see our dogs do the OB required and show them a few vids of the CONTROL that goes into the protection phase they change their minds.

So as I tell many if you don't know about something do the research before you speak on something you do not know anything about. It's like saying "I don't like rare steak" if you never had it.

Howard is a great guy and has ben friendly and informative. I respect him and what he does with his dogs. However I still dissagree with apbt doing any bitework period.
