Out of curiosity, has anyone dealt with a dog bitten by a poisonous snake? My female was bitten (on the tongue) by a Cottonmouth Moccasin on Sunday. She is on antibiotics to avoid a secondary infection. Just wondering if anyone has experience and how long your dog took to heal.

Thank you, the swelling has gone down but I can tell her tongue still hurts.

  5. My dogs have been bitten repeatly by snakes mostly rattlesnakes, but some we are not sure of. Theres a lot of swelling I'm sure, my best suggestion would be to just wait it out. My dogs healed without any medicine and were fine (they just went and got bit again:eek:) it will probally just take a little over a week and a half or so before shes feeling about normal again:wagtail:, it depends though on the sort of snake I suppose..

    Hope your dog heals!

Only copperhead bites here. Antibiotics for a couple of weeks. Usually the swelling starts going down about the third day and 2-3 more days they're wide open again.

Are you guys with copperhead bitten dogs keeping them in the woods or in a grassy area?

I had more copperhead bites when i was on the farm down in the valley, though I have killed more copperheadsI and rattlers up here on the mountain.
Biggest thing is to monitor their condition. As far as remedies go- just benadryl here

Thanks for all the input. It put my mind at ease about how long until she will be back to normal. I knew she would live, that dog is a tank, I couldn't kill her if I tried. But we had a hunting trip planed for Sunday that I will probably have to cancel until she 100%

Rowdy took a Copperhead bite late one evening. I live in town and the snake was about 7 feet behind where I was sitting in a swing in the backyard.

Pic of Rowdy is about 30 minutes after the bite to the side of his mouth and he was drifting out of it. After hours emergency vet ... 10ml of antivenom ... bunch of shots for swelling and infection ... over night vet stay ... $1500 and three days later you never would have known anything happened.

Rowdy later, on a better day but he was very sick and I didn't know it. Six months after the snake incident, I lost Rowdy to grade 3 mast cell cancer (unrelated of course). Until you welcome me home once more ... run free buddy boy

Was a good looking dog, sorry for your loss man... The only good part of living where I do is that I don't have to worry about any poisonous creatures. Would not want to see them kind of snakes in my backyard.

Usualy if the snake took a good bite and latched on and injected venom into the dog would warrant a visit to the vet for anti-venin. A lot of snake bites to dogs don't get too serious because sometimes the snake don't get the chance to inject the venom into the dogs body. If the snake latched on good get to a vet that keeps anti-venin in stock fast.

Judge mine are in a grassy area surrounded with woods. Keeping the grass cut short and not leaving anything laying around for them to hide under helps but they still pass through. Like Rally said benadryl works and costs a hell of a lot less than $1500.

All of the dogs on the edges of my yard are pro snake killers. They kill all kinds of snakes. Even the ones I'd rather them not kill. I've had plenty of copperhead bites on dogs. When I see swelling on a dog I automatically look for the dead snake. Benadryl, dex, and a shot of antibiotics is all I've ever needed and they are one hunnit percent again in a couple days.

My mom's golden retriever got killed by a cottonmouth. He got bit a bunch of times, and by the time she figured out what was going on it was too late. I reckon that's just one more good thing about bulldogs; they might get bit once, but the snake's dead after that....

Bump it up for the snakes. The ones that slither and the people who whisper lol.

Had a dog get bit by a copperhead a few weeks ago. I caught it as soon as it happened and the dog was 100% in about 2 days. Largest one I've seen on the property yet.
