Oklahoma May Permit BSL in Cities -- Updated

    [Monday, January 24, 2005]

    Update!

Second BSL Bill Introduced in Oklahoma

A second piece of breed-specific legislation was prefiled in Oklahoma this week. Sponsored by Rep. Guy Liebmann, H1282 would allow municipalities to regulate "pit bulls," potentially dangerous and dangerous dogs based on their breed. AKC opposes this measure for the reasons outlined in our alert on the similar S247 (see below), but we need your help! Please contact the author of the bill immediately and explain why H1282 is poor public policy. Ask him to withdraw his support from the bill!

Oklahoma is currently one of 12 states that prohibit municipalities from enacting breed-specific laws. That would change if S247 (scheduled to be introduced February 7) is allowed to pass. Sponsored by Sen. Jim Reynolds, the bill allows cites and counties to regulate dangerous dogs based on breed.

The American Kennel Club strongly supports sound, enforceable, non-discriminatory legislation to govern dog ownership, and we appreciate legislators’ desire to keep communities safe for both people and dogs. That’s why we work closely with elected officials and the general dog owning public to promote responsible dog ownership, enforcement of strong leash laws, and development of clear guidelines to manage dangerous dog problems. Such methods can help prevent dog bites and other canine–related accidents from occurring. Conversely, banning or restricting certain breeds—as S247 permits—will do little to promote public safety.

Oklahoma’s current dangerous dog law forces all dog owners to be responsible regardless of the breed they own. Stronger enforcement of the existing law, rather than arbitrary, expensive new legislation, will best protect Oklahoma residents. AKC strongly opposes S247, and we urge concerned dog owners to do the same.

    What You Can Do:

Contact the bill sponsor and voice your opposition to S247. Ask him to withdraw the bill from consideration.

    The Honorable Jim Reynolds

Watch AKC’s Web site for further updates. S247 will likely be referred to a committee in early February, and the Canine Legislation department will post more details at that time.

For more information on this or other legislative issues, please contact the Canine Legislation department (doglaw@akc.org).

Well apparently the emails are just not working.. We need to flood these offices with calls. I just got off the phone with Jim Reynold's office where they informed me that they were unaware of Rep. Liebmann proposed bill.. Bunch of horseshit if you ask me, and I said as much. She (Mr. Reynold's secretary) informed me that they don't know what each other is submitting because it is confidental and so they wouldn't have know about this until I said something..

Told her I wasn't pointing any fingers but her guy is currently sponsoring a bill that will allow Rep. Liebmann's to pass so it looked pretty damn shady to me.. She didn't want to talk anymore and thanked me for calling..

Arrrggghhhh!!! Come on people PLEASE call these offices and help us poor folks in Oklahoma!!

When you call Mr. Reynolds office let him know you are opposed to changing the current law because it is working as it is, and that it does absolutely NO good to ban a specific breed of dog. Also make sure to mention that you feel that the change is coming to specifically focus on banning pitbulls because of the prefiled house bill (H1282) by Rep. Liebmann.

Of course I finished with "I'm a proud American Pitbull Owner and don't appreciate my dogs being focused on to be banned."

    REALLY appreciate the help!!!

GREAT NEWS!!! I just say this on another board and had to crosspost it here!!!!

I am very pleased to announce that s247 has died in committee and will not be heard. We do however need to continue to monitor this session for any attachments to other bills.
Thanks to all you owners/ handlers for your letters, faxs, e-mails, & phone calls. It has paid off this time. Anyone wishing to donate money to help pay for the lobbyist please send to Joan Morrison @ Rt 1 Box 71, Gore, OK. 74435 mark it for Oklahoma BSL.

yeah, glad to see they can be stopped. Ca, tried to do it also a while back but was routed to an aggressive dog law act instead. don't know if you've heard of them or even acknowledge them either, but the A.P.B.R donates funds and has lawyer connections to fight BSL's. anyone who helps on this is subject is appereciated by me.
