Michael Vick, after serving 18 months for operating a dogfighting ring, was conditionally reinstated to the NFL yesterday.
Vick can immediately take part in preseason practices, workouts and meetings and can play in the final two preseason games — if he can find a team that will sign him.
A number of teams have already said they would not.
Once the season begins, Vick may participate in all team activities except games, but NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he would consider Vick for full reinstatement by Week 6 of the season, at the latest, according to ESPN.
Goodell suspended Vick indefinitely in August 2007 after the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback admitted bankrolling a dogfighting operation on his property in Virginia. At the time, Goodell said Vick must show remorse before he would consider reinstating him.
“I accept that you are sincere when you say that you want to, and will, turn your life around, and that you intend to be a positive role model for others,” Goodell said in his letter to Vick. “I am prepared to offer you that opportunity. Whether you succeed is entirely in your hands.”
“Needless to say, your margin for error is extremely limited,” the letter said. “I urge you to take full advantage of the resources available to support you and to dedicate yourself to rebuilding your life and your career. If you do this, the NFL will support you.”
“I do recognize that some will never forgive him for what he did,” Goodell said.
Vick, once the highest-paid player in the league, said he was grateful for a second chance.
Vick pleaded guilty after his three co-defendants had already done so. They told of how Vick participated in the killing of dogs that didn’t perform well in test fights by shooting, hanging, drowning or slamming them to the ground.
Vick’s appearances at federal court in Richmond, Va., prompted large groups of protesters to gather outside. Many were with PETA and held signs depicting photographs of pit bulls ravaged in dogfights. Some supporters showed up as well, some wearing his No. 7 jersey.

    Right on Marty!!!!!

I got into it yesterday about MV. A customer in the shop said MV should be given a second chance b/c "dog fighting has been going on for generations." I told this guy I didn't give one whit about the dog fighting thing, what got me was ...

1: It's not fair he got off b/c he has $$$. What about the guy in Dothan AL, that got 102 years for *alleged* dog fighting? He didn't get caught dog fighting or do any cruelty to animals like MV did. He wasn't even charged or with dog fighting. But got 102 years & MV got 23 MONTHS - 23 months of which which he didn't even finish! But like the old saying goes, "Money talks & bullsh!t walks" & MV's money talked, so that sack of bullsh!t (Vick) is walking! But if it's a working man? Heck no! He's locked up for life!

2: How MV culled his dogs was irreprehensible. Drowning, stomping & eletrocuting is just plain cruel & uncalled for. When I pointed this out to the man I was talking to, he replied "They're just dogs." WTF????? They're just dogs, yes, but they're still living, feelings being that can feel terror & pain! If you want to cull them, do it right. Put a gun between their eyes & pull the trigger! Don't stomp them, electrocute them or drown them!

I asked this man I was talking to "Have you even been electrocuted?" He replied again "They're just dogs." So I asked him a second time - "Have you even been electrocuted?" He replied the same - "They're just dogs." I got firm with him then & told him "That's not what I'm asking you. I asked you HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ELECTROCUTED?" He just looked at me & wouldn't answer.

Turns out ironically I HAD been "electrocuted" (sort of) just the previous Thursday. The VA clinic was testing me for nerve damage & during one part of the test they will stick little needles like acpuncture needles in your hands & turn on electricity. Even though both the needles & the volts were small, let me tell you - it HURT!! Heck, it is now Tues & where they ran volts through my right hand STILL hurts!

Before my experience I was ignorant too & didn't think much of electrocution. I thought "Bam" hit the juice & they're gone. That may be if it's done right. MAYBE. But if it's NOT done right, if something goes wrong, I can only imagine the terrible agony the animal would go through! And the drowning? Forget about it! His a.. should STILL be in jail on that alone! That is terribly cruel!

And I have to ask - what about the man in Dothan's "second chance?" He didn't do anything even remotely close to what MV did & got a much harsher sentence. And ALL of his appeals have been denied! But where is HIS second chance?

To me MV is lower than horse dung & should NEVER be allowed to play again! EVER! I say seeing as he likes euthing dogs so well, let that sorry POS get a job at his local shelter putting animals to sleep for a living. That'd suit him well. That what I say about it!

Disgusting. Let me stop talking about MV now before I barf up my breakfast!

(OK getting off soap box now ...)

Hemi: The articles I read about the Lewis case (& I've read several) said dogs in the Lewis case were spotless & weren't even a year old. It said he was "getting them ready to fight." How did they know what he was getting them ready for? Have they looked at the ADBA show standard lately? They want dogs shown at "pit weight" which would logically mean the dogs would have to go through a keep, which could mean the use of things like flirt poles, mills, swim tanks & tracking the progression of a dog, all things they used to convict him as a POTENTIAL dog fighter. He is given 102 years for what they THOUGHT he might do. Yet Vick is given 23 months for what he DID do. Give me an effin' break.

Lewis was indeed arrested in '05. It says scarred & injured dogs were found on his property, but it doesn't say if the dogs were his & it doesn't say how the injuries were sustained. Surely if it were dog fighting injuries why wasn't he jailed then? Surely scarred/injured dogs is much more damning evidence than some meds, some spotless yearlings, some notes & some exercise equipment. They said he wasn't a dog fighting "king pin" so it would have behooved them to convict. But they didn't, even though they had far more serious evidence.

    But any way ....

preme: Vick is only humble b/c it serves his own selfish purposes. He knows if he comes out all cocky (like he normally is - I saw him on TV w/ the Falcons before he got popped) the media will eat him alive & the NFL will give him the boot. By playing "poor me" & giving us the sad puppy eyes he knows he can drum up some sympathizers, just like he has here.

I'm not falling for it myself. Anyone who can drown, hang, stomp or electrocute a dog they raised up is a cold-hearted mutha-phucka who doesn't think of anyone but himself. You can fall for his "poor me" act if you want to, but there are folks out there who know better & can see through that bull like it's cheesecloth.

As for myself, sure I have done wrong & sure I have needed forgiveness or punishment. But I have NEVER done anything as cruel as Vick & the things I DID do, I never had the frigging balls to ask for my job back, let alone a multi-million dollar job that was the one that funded his illegal activities & animal cruelty in the first place! Like I said before, he's all about thinking for himself. He's worried about those dollar signs slipping away. Too bad he didn't think about that while he was stomping that dog to death.

To me MV is nothing more than a friggin joke. A sorry sack of crap that needs to be put in a mental institution. He is sicko. Anyone who culls dogs like he does is sick in the head. Normal people don't do that.

Furthermore has brought down the hammer on ALL bulldog owners. That ANY bulldog owner can even stick up for him to me is amazing. I still say put his sorry butt in the ATL shelter euthing dogs for a living. He should like that.

As for other felons getting their jobs back, how can you compare Martha Stewart & Vick? My gosh, that is like comparing some kid who robs you with a pen knife to a Jeffery Dahmer. Sure, both are criminals, but they aren't even in the same hemisphere. But whatever. I know some people will always defend that POS no matter what. I personally hope he ever gets another job even NEAR a football field again.

    But that's just me.
