and if he had sarcoptic mange you would be infested, and so would your other dogs if it's been 6 months so I don't know... highly doubt it...

No test, i was told they are kinda a crap shot for what they cost. The vet act suggested i try playing with the diet first, and that that alone will take a while as i need em on a food for 8-12 weeks to get an idea if it working or not working.

well, if you try playing with diet, the most important thing is to change only ONE item at the time...
you for example start with taking out chicken for example, but you don't go and take out chicken & rice out of the dogs diet..

you take one thing out for a couple of weeks, see if the dogs improves and you continue as long as you don't stumble upon something you removed that did help with the allergic reaction..

what are you currently feeding the dog?

dogs can be allergic even to grass... so it's not automatically the food neither...

This is the part that sucks, i was feeding raw all chicken and beef product and fish oil and a multi. Point is i had it down to only a few things as compared to bagged dog food. I looked into feeding raw venison, duck, rabbit, or something like that and it was all like $4 lb so a 90 lb dog woulda cost like $500 a month to feed. I am not in farm country so i wasnt gonna find anything else.

I now have him on California Naturals Lamb and Brown Rice. It had as few ingredients as any food i looked at, also it is made by the same company that makes Evo and i used to feed that and liked it.

500$ a month? damn.. how much does that dog weigh? lol :o

wel really, without taking away every single thing in his food, you won't have much luck pointing out the exact problem..
I would switch to raw and cut down every item on the menu for a couple of weeks until you find what is causing this..

it's important to really know what is triggering this or it has high chances of coming back and then you're back at where you're now..
a quick fix isn't really the solution to your problem..

and like I said, there are many, many things a dog can be allergic to...
allergies are no fun to deal with, my JRT bitch has allergies to, due to her environment but we still haven't found out what is causing it to come up during summer time...

do you have any companies that specialize in raw dog food?
not like that mixed stuff but real meat?

I'm about to get mine delivered and the prices are not that bad, I calculated for about 22 lbs of raw meat, organs and bones and from all sorts of animals: horse, lamb, rabit, deer, chicken, duck, whatever.. and I came out around 26$ which isn't bad compared to the Orijen kibble I'm feeding :p

did you do the environmental allergy test, i ask cuz that is the one they tell me is like a 50/50 chance the first time and if you do it a second time it is like a 75/25 suc rate but also very expensive. ow and my dog is a 12 month old 100lb ambull mutt. So at 4% of body weight for a puppy that works out to 4lbs a day and like $12-15 a meal or $30 a day. Dam ambulls live and learn never again. Thank god i have one good Bulldog or id loose my mind over him!!

4 lbs of meat A DAY?!

that is a HUGE amount of food, ambully or not
I couldn't imagine my friends full grown 130 lb DDB (RIP) eating that much a day actually lol

Am i wrong 3-4% of body weight is what a puppy needs? He would eat it when i gave it to him and although a bully he was not overweight. Might have to do with 3-5 hours of activity or working a day? Shit on kibble and soft mixed in he gets a half of can and then 4 cups of kibble a day and he is all ribs and he aint the ambully kind that looks like a working pit but blue. He is the looks like a American bulldog crossed to a APBT and all giant head stocky and muscle. Not bragging as in reality he is a mess of a dog imop!!

Okay, I am not saying it is demodex for sure, but it sounds like it. Allergies and sarcoptic mange itch the dog intensely. Demodex typically doesn't itch.

It is on most dogs; however, if the dog has a weak immune system they get overran by the little bugs. That is when it is noticeable. It is VERY common among AM bullys. It is fairly common among all bulldogs.

It usually looks like small hotspots, but sometimes can take over the whole dog. It doesn't spread to other dogs either. They already have the bugs - just not a weak immune system.

All that being said, there are multiple ways people say take care of it. One method is the motor oil method. I've never tried it. Sounds nasty. Another is borax and hydrogen peroxide baths. Again, I am not sure about that because I have never tried it. There are numerous other methods out there. Not sure how they are though.

The only method I have is ivermec. I use 250-300 mcg/kg (micrograms per kilogram of dog weight) given orally. You can get it in a vial from a farm supply store. Usually that is 1% or 10 mg/ml. Or, you can use the deworm jelly. It is 1.8% or 18mg/ml. So it is more concentrated. I treat the dog every day for two weeks then every other day for two more weeks. Then every week for two more weeks. Then every month for heart worm prevention.

FYI, if your dog has heart worm and you give it ivermec it can cause right heart failure due to dead worms being pushed up into the lung beds causing strain. So, you may want to check for heart worms before you begin treatment.

You can treat your dog w/ivermec for about $25. Just be careful with your conversions. I have never given more than a half ml of ivermec, but my dogs aren't nearly as big as yours.

PS, you should post a pic. I would love to see your dog.

Only supposed to dilute with baby oil if it becomes too dry and pasty. Otherwise just put it on. I use my bare hands cause like scooter, I like the way it stinks. Also try giving your dog a bath with Tea Tree oil mixed into the shampoo. It's great for a lot of skin conditions and it smells great. :)

Always nice when people take the time to try and help. Sounds like good info above and def something i was considering last week before i talked to the vet.. even we could not get dose right for his weight based on what i remembered being told to give him by another board member. I think i told her i was told 1/10TH A CC PER PER 20 LBS OF BODY WEIGHT? OR PER 10 LBS OF BODY WEIGHT? Anyway i was also nervous about injecting him as have no idea where the shit goes, in the ass in vein and if i did get the dose off i was told it can really do a ton of harm to a animal in more than one way?

I dont have pics at the moment on the computer as i just got another one. I did take a hike though the other day and got some good ones!! He is a big old goofy lookin handsome fella, all giant head with a pink ass nose loose skin all over his neck and paws like a bulldog as big as my feet. He is huge just under 100lbs and like 21 tall. He is not the short stumpy pushed in face English Bulldog Bully that is all the rage. he kinda looks like a Apbt AM bulldog mastif cross, I am actually pretty sure that is what he must be lol!!!

I gave him a test spot today and got a good look at what this shit is all about!! It dries yellow on the dog ehy, and it stays greasy and wet for quite a while. Someone said apply it twice a day but i dont know for how many days. Also he is a indoor dog for the most part so going on the couch and beds is kinda a problem with this stuff especially if i am putting it on him at night. I was gonna put it on first thing in the am and take em out for a hike for the day and hope it dried in enough to not get on everything but if it needs to be put on twice a day that isnt really gonna help much. So how many times a day and for how many days. Again i am using it just to help head or sooth the spots all over that have been irritated and lost hair. I figure if he has any mites or mange this could also help or take care of it depending on how good the stuff is. If it mange does just this work or do you also need ivermectin?

I think the instuctions say to use it every 3 days......

Sounds like a nice looking dog. It isn't too hard to figure out dosing.

I will do the math for you. You may want to double check though. Here goes: 100 lbs converted to kg is 45 kg (100/2.2). 250mcg/kg = 11250= mcg (45*250). 11250mcg converted to mg = 11.25 mg ivermec

The concentration of commonly found ivermec is 1% or 10mg/ml - that is the same concentration (1%=10mg/ml). So, your dog would need 1.125 ml of ivermec each day. I would just round that up to 1.2 ml daily.

Now, you don't need to inject it. Just open your pups mouth and squirt it in. I've never tasted it, but by the way dogs act it must be nasty. Better than motor oil though - in my opinion.

A lot of vets will treat for demodex without a positive scraping. It is often hard to get a good sample. My first dog that had it was scraped 4 times without a positive result. After months of headache and expense the vet just started treating her and she got better.

If I were you, I would try ivermec before messing with the diet and spending huge amounts of cash on high end food. Just feed your dog diamond performance. It is good food without all the crap, and it is cheap. I think I get it for $25 for 40 lbs at the same feed store I get my ivermectin.

Some swear by Nu for mange. I think it kills the adult well, but not the eggs.

Sounds good i was also thinking the ivermectin last week when i went to the vet. then she just refiled his antibiotic and it has been clearing up little by slow to pretty fast. i know what happens though, after the second or third week it will start getting bad again as if he was on nothing at all. I wanted to go in and ask if the Happy Jack Kennel dip i washed him with works for flea prevention if i spray him down ever 3-4 weeks so i will ask her about the ivermectin and that the directions you gave all sound right to her. Thanks so much for the help, not to often people take the time out to help another. As it sounds you know a dog with this type of problem is a real headache it drains the wallet and you feel bad for the little fucker all at once. You really end up torn for the most part. How is the food you suggested on dogs with weak stomaches. I have tried everything on my female APBT, Evo she never got over the runs, TOTW both Pacific Stream and Wild whatever version, Orijen, the sister company Acana and she always had soft stools and at times they would be loose. After a while and tons of negative stools i switched to raw and she had perfect stools in two weeks time, small and firm to hard. right now she is on Boiled chicken and white rice as she had a bad case of the runs for a 7-10 days. I got her stool tested and nothing. Put her on flagil and the boiled food and it is getting better but far from perfect.

If the diet is working for you, stay with it. The diamond food isn't much different than any other high grade, all natural, performance food. It is just cheap and easy.
