IMPORTANT updates about Panacur(Fenbendazole)

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by Bulldogluvr, Dec 28, 2010.

  1. Most of you may not be aware of this, but the latest info on the worming drug Panacur/Safeguard (fenbendazole) is of concern to dog owners. Already very expensive and time-consuming to use, fenbendazole just doubled its cost and doubled its inconvenience to use.

This drug used to be dosed at 1cc per 4.4 lb, given 3 days in a row ... the new dosage (according to the new The Merck Veterinary Manual) is that you must now keep this same regimen, except that it is now TWICE daily, not once.

This doubles the cost, and doubles the inconvenience, of using Panacur (Safeguard).

According to The Merck Veterinary Manual, the whole class of drug that Panacur falls into (the benzamidazoles) is falling out of favor with consumers, because of the necessary protracted treatment, and concurring continual resistance that parasites are building to the drug.

Therefore, as I have repeated many times, Panacur is best used ONLY if you have a confirmed case of whipworm, or on a once-yearly or every-six-month basis.

But for monthly maintenance and upkeep, an easier, cheaper, and more potent wormer should be used (as for instance pyrantel pamoate).

If you are giving Ivermectin at the dosage of 1/10cc/ml per 10pds. It covers whips, rounds, hooks, and Heartworm.

I have heard of resistance to pyrantel as well.

  7. It also is a remedy for both types of mange hair loss.As we all know, red-mange is in the blood, but you can clean up a hound externally with the application of the Ivermectin in proper dosages. FRIEND

Actually "red mange" which actually is demodex. Is not in the blood. It is a mite that lives in the hair follicles. Actually it is part of the natural flora. Young dogs have immature immune systems and that is why some dogs can not control the overgrowth of the mite. And it is a different dose for the treatment of demodectic mange. Which is relatively high and if not properly given can cause toxicity.

  9. LOL @ red mange in the blood! Gather some facts before spewing silly shit.
