Does This Look Like A Hot Spot?

I have never had a dog with one. I went out to feed and water this morning and Rebel had a quarter size spot on his hip. I thought maybe it was from him laying on it and put some nu stock on it. I go back out just now to give fresh water and this small spot is now huge. It's all wet and moist looking. He is in his house I guess to keep flies off it. He usually lays under the shrub. What do I put on it? Should I take him to the vet in the morning, or is it pretty home treatable. I would appreciate any info on this. Like I said, I've never seen one. Here's a couple pics. You can see there appears to be another one starting under the big one.

 

Maybe a spider bite?

 

Looks like a hot spot to me. Your vet can give him a steriod shot and it will dry it up. Usually caused by some sort of irritant. Then the dog chews and chews. Would probably bring him inside if you could. Flies are going to have a heyday.

 

That does not look like a hot spot as they usually worsen over time not in a day, it looks more like a spider or even maybe a snake bite to me. I wouldn't delay to long in a trip to the vet. I had one a long time ago that came up with a wound very similar and just as quickly turned out she had been bitten by a spider. If it changes at all or his behavior changes I would immediately take a trip to the vet or even evet if necessary. I have also seen similar wounds in relation to chemical burns.

 

looks more like a cut of some kind instead of a hot spot to me but only one of mine has had a hot spot and i caught it very soon. So i am not an expert at it..

 

Never seen a hotspot that looked like that...I'd take him to the vet...keep us updated.

 

Hot spots usually don't appear and get worse like that all in one day, I would take a trip to the vet.

 

Well I did some research and they do advance very quickly from the licking. I happen to have a great vet and sent him the pics. He thinks it's moist dermatitus from looking at them.
He told me what to do for now and if it is worse by mid afternoon tommorow, to bring him in, but that they can heal almost as quickly as they start.
So I've washed it with mild soap and water and put some 2.5% hydrocortisone on it. He also got a 20 mg prednisolone I had from China's staff infection.
After I washed it and looked at it really good. I don't see anything that looks like a bite, just really oozy and nasty. He is drinking and eating like normal.
I will see how it looks tommorow. Thanks for the reply's.

 

I've never heard of a hot spot showing up so quickly and getting so bad that fast.
Here's what I would do with that:
1) Bring the dog inside the house if at all possible and keep him indoors until this 'hot spot' is healed.
2) If you have a pair of clippers, clip the hair from around the wound so that the hair isn't getting into the 'hot spot' area. If you keep the hair out of the area and keep it clean, that should help it to heal faster.
3) If you have any Nolvasan solution, you can clean the area with that a couple of times a day. You can generally get it at a vet's office or even some feed stores. (It usually comes in the form of a dark blue colored concentrate solution and you have to dilute a little bit down with water until you get it to a sky blue color.)
4) If he seems to be licking at it still, I would put an e-collar on him to keep him from licking/chewing. This will help the 'hot spot' to heal faster. You know, the big ole' lampshade things that go over their head...
5) I would probably put him on some antibiodics. For a skin issue, Keflex (Cephalexin) tends to generally work the best for most dogs. I'm not sure how much he weighs but for a 50 to 60 pound dog, I would normally give 1 capsule of 500mg Keflex orally twice a day for about 7 days or so.
6) For the inflammation, I may give him some Prednisone. You have to be very careful with this drug, because it is a steroid. It can sometimes cause them to drink more water, which in turn, will cause them to urinate more often. Generally, when a veterinarian prescribes Prednisone to a dog, they give it as a tapering dose. For example, they may start the dog out on 1 tablet of 20mg Prednisone orally twice a day for 3 days, then 1 tablet of 20mg Prednisone orally once a day for 3 days, then 1/2 tablet of 20mg Prednisone orally once a day for 3 days. This dose would probably work out fairly well for a 50 or so pound dog.

I am not a Licensed Veterinarian and please do not take this as medical advice, this is just what 'I' would do if it were my dog. I have worked as a Veterinary Technician for the last 10 years and have dealt with plenty of hot spots in the veterinary field. I dont know what it is but it didnt get worse because the dog just licked it got worse real fast because he actually chewed on himself because it was that itchy.

 

Could be, just not sure. You know a lick granuloma can get bad quick if not treated. We have been battling flies here like crazy. I saw some small spots on Rolo last week that were puss filled and green. The hair came off and now it's just a slick spot with no hair but not like Rebs. Thanks for all the advise and I will be looking tommorow for any change. If it's worse, he will have a vet appointment.

 

I have a girl with chronic allergies and hers will pop up overnight. Usually somewhere around her neck chest area. Since she can't chew there, she rubs and rubs. But I have seen them chew the hair off just that fast. And it could be the bites of flies or insects in general as the source. Seen that lick granuloma thing too. It can advance really fast.

 

OK update. Started Rebel on Keflex too yesterday. 500 mg twice a day along with the steriod. Still cleaning and now applying Calamine to dry it up. Looks better to me today than it did. No redness, just skin, but not oozy anymore. I'll try to take some pics to post tommorow.

 

OK. This is just a few days into treating this, whatever it is. I was opting going ahead to the vet tommorow if it wasn't looking better, but I think it is. I had just cleaned it and he laid in the dirt before I could get a picture. Opinions??? Better or not...

 

It looks like a hot spot to me they usally start from som kind of truama like a bite of some kind.I use polyspuron and gold bond to keep it dry works pretty good for us

 

Wow, I think it looks MUCH better!!! Keep doin what you're doin and I think it should heal up. It already looks 100 times better, though! Good job!

 

I would say it's looking better. Much drier and cleaner looking. But again, I'm no vet.

 

My mom had a little dog that had a spot that looked just about like that.She was just chewing the crap out of it.I give her some antibiotic and put some Nu Stock on it and it looks about like the last pics you had.It started getting better.Anyway,i couldn't tell you for sure what's wrong but it looks like it's getting some better.Good luck.
