I had a house dog (coda) sometimes she would go on chain, when on the chain she was a little teritorial. she was fine with the few people she knew but that was it.off chain anyone at all could pet her w/ or without me there.about 10 years ago or so,we were in the yard, a dogman from indy whose been around a long time was there.he says wow thats a good lookin bitch and starts towards her.she may bite ya i said, he says I got $100 says I can pet her....well it didnt take long for him to give up that $$$ then i took her off the chain and the first thing she did was run up to the man w/ tail waging to meet her new friend!! just thought id share that one since it pertains to this post.

So I think we are in violent agreement....the dog need not maul a scum bag, being a scum bag a nice size Bull Dog charging the scum bag with a you best leave attitiude is suffuicient...he need not attack the intruder, should the intruder attack his master you would probably hope this dog trys to deter the attacker, OK. It has been my experience in the protection sports arena you cannot always count on an untrained dog a) to do this...and b) to do it well

My opinion is our dogs should be left to be dogs....but they aren't being left alone they are being persecuted, the more we keep them out of harms way the better off they will be....and I agree with Tommy, entering into someones yard although not invited, right or wrong, should not be met with an attacking dog......perhaps a dog that is warning, if the intruder is attacking your family, well cross your fingers and hope your untrained protection dog gets it right.....the sad truth is even if your dog does step in and correctly deters the offender with an attack, it is very likely the dog will be demonized because of it's breed - and not by you or me but the army of folks that would like nothing more than to see this breed disappear, it is discouraging

  3. Years ago I knew someone that had a male that he used to chain during the day and at night he was the house dog. The dog would later be stolen off his yard so you see he wasn't HA at all.

That old rednose dog never liked this one particular friend that used to come over the house. He would never bite or growl or show any signs of aggresion towards anyone. This one guy he would always watch and when he was in the house would follow him where ever he would go.

As it turns out, the scumbag broke into the house years later and that old red nose went to town.

Good points and I completely agree. Perhaps only a small piece, and not a whole chunk of the dipstick's ass, would be more appropriate.

I'll put it this way, regardless of breed. Any normal person wouldn't let some stranger just go onto their yard. Any normal person wouldn't let some stranger open their door and walk right in. Why should your dog?

Along these same lines guys, I have a question. I know a dog that has been put down, and let me tell you why. Let me have your input please.
The dog was male and intact. He was 4 yrs old. Well bred and a beauty.
He was an inside and outside dog. Slept with the owners and their kids, and had never offered to bite ANYONE. Had been in shows and had no problems with judges etc.
Now this dog seemed to LOVE to be sprayed with a water hose. He absolutly went nuts jumping up after the stream, biting it and barking his head off.
He just went off on the water. The owners thought it was a game and from time to time would spray him and let him go off on it.
One day they sprayed him in the hot afternoon. The dog did his thing jumping, biting the water, barking like crazy.
Then the daughter went out to feed the dog about 5 minutes after this and as soon as she got into the kennel, the dog jumped up, bit her in the face bad, and grabbed onto her thigh and wouldnt get off.
All hell broke out and somebody ran to help the screaming girl and got him off her.
She went to the emergency room and got multiple stitches in her lip that was split into 2 pieces. They did not report it as a dog bite and they kept the bitten leg a secret. God love them, they didnt want all their dogs taken or put down or a bad mark on the breed.
At any rate, the husband put the dog down crying his eyes out. The whole family was heartbroken. This was a really great dog.
What the hell do you think happened?
I personally think the dog was hyped up and HATED the water and the family just didnt read the dog right. The dog was nutty over the water thing and harmed the girl who was the one spraying him.
I suppose I am glad they put the dog down, it was the right thing to do I guess, but damn.:(

  7. The people did the right thing. The dog got what he deserved. The not reporting thing was also right.

As far as why, this is the question in this breed. Sometimes they just snap. It happens. Sometimes the dog develops a bond with a certain member of the family. The dog will not show any HA tendencies until it is to late.

I put one down years ago that had a similar thing happened. I would have rather cut off my right arm then put him down, but I did. The dog in question attacked a member of my family that had recently become combative to me. There was alot of yelling and screaming for months and the dog was privy to it. One day the person came into my room while I was in the shower. The dog was on my bed as usual. The person bent down to put something on the bed and it attacked. She was lucky that the dog slammed her into a closet. If she would have fallen on the ground , she would have been dead.

I tried to use the protection line but in the end he was put down.

I don't allow strangers in my yard, don't even allow people I know without notice. It is completely fenced with locked gates. My dogs knew this and knew it was their job to keep people off my property. They have protected my property before. One took down a deputy sheriff that came in and started to open my door. My dog was in the right, the deputy was in the wrong. Each dog had a job. They were very good at their job.
People are supposed to be smarter than a dog. Coming onto another person's property isn't a very smart thing to do. Even a dog knows that, I would expect more from a person.
Bottom line, my dog and my property. I don't want anyone bothering either.
