there is alot of chit chat these days about how animals have more rights than people, as those who are convicted of "animal abuse" in one form or another, are often receiving ~large~ sentences.
but this is merely like an onion-peel it back to find yet another layer.
alot of it is media sensation-take this case for example....
    cliff notes version... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_rabbits_mutilated

"Mass. man gets 4 year sentence for killing rabbits"

    here is the full story....

    http://www.thetranscript.com/ci_16039540

to the casual reader they see the headline and have already drawn their conclusion- the animal is valued on par or higher than a human. "how can killing a rabbit get you 4 years in prison?" most will say. they will blame the AR folks, lots of blame will be cast at everyone but the person who did it. but lets look at it more closely....
first of all, he already has the option to get out after 2 years-provided he is on good behavior. this was part of his sentencing.
so a man killed some rabbits, big deal right? you bet! you see, these were not HIS rabbits, he was not killing them for food, nor pelt. hmmmmm, the plot thickens.
the rabbits belonged to a 6 year old girl, her pets.
the rabbits were not out roaming the streets, antagonising this man, eating the carrots from his garden, or anything of the sort. they were penned up. safe to say these were probably pretty docile, and not a menace to society.
these rabbits were killed buring a break in. thats right, a break in. and this is after a failed attempt at what can only be thought of as GTA. B&E is a pretty serious crime where i come from.
so, where does that bring us? oh yeah, the crime. the man committed the bunny mutilation/murder in conjuction with other crimes-its funny how there is always more to the story aint it?
the best part is there is 40 minutes of surveillance video footage of this!

so lets recap- five counts of cruelty to animals, five counts of killing an animal, and one count each of breaking and entering into a building at night for a felony, wanton destruction of property over $250 and malicious destruction of property over $250.

to me-he got off light. if it were my place and my animals i would want an even greater sentence. hell, i would have probably done something awful to the man and as a result, lost my freedom for a long, long, long, time.
so lets remember, we cant always go by the headlines, and often we should put ourselves in the picture before we cast judgement.
just because someone goes to jail for something animal related, does not mean it was underserving punishment

some people stab others and they get way less then that. Guy i know got 2 years. U kill a rabbit u get 4 years. Mate thats laughable.

whats laughable is that you are merely confirming what im saying- did you actually read the article, or just see "man kills rabbits get 4 years"

in conjuction with other crimes, the sentence was 4 years. breaking and entering is not newsworthy, aninmal cruelty is. the headline sells, and you bought it hook, line, and sinker

Great post RR a lot of people do just read headlines and snippets and not get into true details of the real story thus coming to ridiculous conclusions and start to take sides with someone that is most deffinately in the wrong

My problem really isn't the time sentenced for animal cruelty, if its someone's property, but the lack of time served for more severe crimes.

That's how it should be but here in Indiana they put them in their own prison away from the people who would take care of business!

    I hear you RR.

but thats how it is with majority of crimes. When you read the paper, watch the news clips, or go up for your own sentencing lol it always sounds worse than it is. Unless it sounds like LIFE without the possibility, then its not as bad as it sounds.

For example, a lot of guys talk about their criminal history on some shit like I was facing 15 years! but what they don't tell you is that the minimum was like 18 months lol really, who maxes out? unless you're in there acting a fool u aint gonna do them 15.

On the note of that article you posted... I don't think he should have gotten more time. Prosecuters always beef up them charges to get you to plead to what they should have originally been giving you anyways. Like if you catch a robbery case... u gonna end up with like 8 different charges facing an ass load of time just so you can plead out to the robbery.

5 years minimum or maximum? big difference between the two.
If he got 5 years minimum, thats not too bad considering the maximum its second degree and non-intentional. You could punch someone and if they die its second degree.
