Creating The Pecking Order?

    Hey,

I've heard different things about creating the pecking order for your dogs. Wondering if this can actually be accomplished? Like, one dog always waits until the other dog is finished eating before they are fed, one dog is not allowed on the couch / bed whatever. Does this actually help to determine which dog is bottom rung? Or are the dogs going to figure out for themselves who's who no matter what you do.

    Thx!

  2. I have five dogs at present and find as long as i keep asserting myself as top dog on a regular basis it keeps them in check but be quick to check any dominant behavior within your dogs too each other also keep an eye on when your dogs are coming in season i always separate them for the couple of weeks even the individual females as they will fight hormones flying , also if you have younger dogs and older dogs when the younger ones start coming of age they will keep testing you and the other dogs to try an establish themselves as top dog its a tough one cos no one wants there dogs locked up all the time but i`d always have somewhere to keep them by themselves when needs be

Unlike birds, male dogs are the only ones that can create a pecking order. Females can not.

    Worst joke ever lol

Sooo any opinions on the topic? Can you influence the pecking order (excuse my language lol)? Or am I just wasting my time trying to prevent any future altercations by trying to make my female pup bottom rung? She's a confident and feisty young pup and will end up being twice the size of Boss and he doesn't back down.

  11. I gave my opinion on the topic and thats what works for me your young dog will keep pressin for that position if you dont take it yourself but you still should have somewhere to keep them seperate when needs be ,best of luck

there aint shit you can do as far as the dog's they will determine there own pecking order amongst themselves but you need to be at the top no matter how dogs are same with horses its just something they do

I think its insane to try this

If you want dogs that get along get a different breed

Ive seen dogs create a pecking order and it wasnt preaty

Two dogs on one once they finished the one they turned on eachother

It happened in a yard accident the only reason I can tell you what happened it was caught by the security cams and I tell ya it wasnt preaty

    So proceed with caution

    Damn. K thx all!

Btw, Boss is as cold as they come. BUT he does have a trigger so I will definitely proceed with caution:D.

For the most part, Boss does not make his own decisions in my presence. He's warned her a couple of times but for the most part all the corrections come from me. I just have to stay on top of them I guess.

In my yard I was boss end of story. I would not trust 2 bulldogs alone together no matter how cool they seemed. I kept mine on chains. They knew who nourished them and the penalty for questioning that, but I never tried to make them get along. That's just not in their nature.

Yeah the pup's a Presa Canario and although Boss (my APBT) has never been DA (he's 5.5 yrs old) I know they need constant supervision esp when the pup gets older.

  20. I don't really buy into the whole creating a pecking order thing. I actually do pretty much the opposite of what you suggested (always one dog first) and I reward the dog that is displaying the behavior that I want. For example, when I get home from work I take out the quietest dog first; he gets to go train and do some fun stuff with me before the others.

I also don't allow my dogs to dominate one another or have little scuffles so that they can figure things out on their own. The idea of that seems so silly to me. Some dog is gonna end up majorly hurt that way. So I keep my dogs separate, plain and simple. Last thing I need is two or more dogs tearing around the house as it is.
