What is a good site to purchase a chain from? I found this place and it's sold by the foot for $1.99. 10ft. would be $19.90 and it's rated at 3,150lbs.

Look on craigslist or go to the metal scrap yards no need to buy a new chain it will not stay clean for long.Be sure to check all links before buying.

Thanks, I will check out a few different places when I get home also. It hard to shop online only. I'll check craigslist but not a lot of people have stuff like this for sale around where I live. I'll check anyways and if you know of a good link, please let me know. I've tried a few different links and this seems like the best and cheapest chain that I have found. It's not huge but it has a solid load capacity. Thanks for the info Dogmanhazel.

Don't forget to factor in the shipping ,chain's heavy and if the shipping isn't free you might as well go to the local hardware store and get it from them.

x2 the shipping's gonna kill any savings you might find..better off just going to home depot or something..

I go to my local feed/hardware store and just have them cut me whatever length I want.Shipping is probably about as high as the chain is if you buy online.

If you have several dogs buy a bucket of chain. Usually 100 feet in a bucket and you can talk to the manager/owner and get 10% or better off of the regular price.

what will you use to secure the chain? axel? bury a cement block? other?

Car axle for sure. Was going to hook it to trees and put the dog house real close so they could move around the tree and it would make a good shaded spot but I have to get home and see what I have to work with exactly.

I was going to reccomend an axle.[IMG]

I still don't get why you drive the axle all the way down to the ground. why not leave a small gap of 2-4"?

I dont drive mine all the way down in the ground. I leave at least 6 inches above the ground. I also dont connect the chain to the axle via s-hook. I run the axle thru a large o ring connected to the chain.
Some of my setups are nothing more than a chain securely fastend to a cinder block, then i bury the cinder block a couple feet deep and I like these setups a lot, you never have to worry about the chain getting wrapped around nething b/c it's buried.

I would figure that it wouldn't get worn down as easy either becuase it's not rubbing against anything.

#1 buy your chain according to the grade of chain- the better the grade the longer it will last- you can find cheap chain that hold 3500 pounds but are of inferior grades and will wear out quickly. #2 dont bury the chain- you cannot see it rusring but it will and thats a big chance to take on a kennel accident. just speaking from experience. with an "o" ring on the axle it will not get tangled up- only if you dont keep your chainspots clean-dan

Thanks Dan, that's good to know. I'll get everything set up and post pictures of it when it's done. I should have them by the 2nd week of December so this is just a get some good ideas for this before you go and have something bad happen. I plan on buying a grade 70+ chain and after my yard is complete by April, I will post pictures of what I have. I have big plans but I have to start somewhere and this is as good a place as any. Plus, lots of people have had experience with kennel accidents on here. I have not (YET) but my time will come and I'll hope to have everything I need and the knowlege to get it fixed as soon as it happens to stop it from happening again.:)
