Can the bitch get out of the set-up? It would seem that she could relocate the pups if so.

I would suggest expanded metal flooring. This would help with cleanup.

the bitch will eat through that wire as soon as she see something she wants . or when she's tired of the pups .

I've been thinking about building one also just so I have it if I decide to make a breeding down the road. Thought about going with Trex brand composite decking for the flooring. Seems it would be tougher than wood, and alot more resistant to the elements, and more sanitary. Yeah it's also more spendy, but I figure do it right the first time, save money in the long run, and be a better all around finished product. This is of course just my thoughts as I haven't put it in to action yet. Any thought on this?

run another rail down the middle...the 5/4" board will sag on a 46" span over time....and space the boards at least a 1/2" to 3/4" apart....for easier clean up down the road....looks good tho...it looks like the shady corner which is a good thing....i built one with a wood and shingle roof and then the other has a metal roof....metal roof is about 8-10 degrees hotter on the inside during the day....so keep that in mind for young pups in the brutal summer days that are on the way....US1

i agree and if you look at your local hardware store you can find some rubber in a can,to dip tool handles in to rubber coat them, and cover the expanded metal with to avoid any injuries. or even some pvc fence boards work great as they are not as porous to hold possible contaminants. by the way whats up hachiman

Made this brood box myself, with a bumper around it to prevent squishing.

I have 3 above ground pens at home, your ok with spacing your 2x4's 1 inch apart for the floor, but no wider than that or the dogs feet and legs will fall threw the space. I also, wouldnt use a pen as a brood box because of the difficulty getting in and out to get pups. Any trap door or alternate door to get in and out easier, is one extra route for the dog to destroy. The one bad thing about pens, is that the dogs will start destroying it if not routinely alternating between chain space & pen. JMO

i think a wood roof is better . they will still eat through it if they want . but that metal eats through easier . the pen is looking good . but use cattle panels for the wire . it takes long for them to tear up .
