You want a screaming, high strung, borderline retarded heavy redboy dog in the house?

LOLOL. Many mental health care professionals have described me he same way. Fortunately, all my medications are properly adjusted. :)

As far as the dog is concerned, it would be more for something to cross into. I have always followed that bloodline, that is probably the source of my infatuation.

As I've said repeatedly without knowing the traits of these bloodlines and dogs you're really setting everyone up for failure. I mean you just found out your 11 week old pup is half Jeep or whatever. After telling everyone you have dog of the year caliber dogs at your finger tips. Slow down and enjoy the process.

I am no housebreaking expert but my wife has done an exceptional job over the years.

The puppies go outside on the regular during the day. When they piss or shit, she heaps praises on them like they solved all the world's problems each and every time they go. "Good outside-Good outside". Once they go they are immediately brought back inside. The first three four five days.

That conditions/imprints upon them that outside is not play time but this is when you go. They go four or five days straight business. When they go outside they GO OUTSIDE. As bad as it sounds, they go four or five days with no outside playing. There is time for that later.

Anytime there is playing, running, rough housing inside the house as soon as it is done, they go outside to GO OUTSIDE. They solve all the world's problems again and again.

Like mentioned the bladders are small and they only know the natural things eat, piss, shit then sleep. They eat first thing in the morning. As soon as they eat, she picks them up and takes them outside to GO OUTSIDE. A lot of good work is lost right after they eat. Like mentioned by BB, they naturally need to piss and shit as soon as they eat and drink. There is nothing natural about holding it (for them or us). If they go in the first couple minutes after eating while waiting for you to get them outside.....a lot of progress gets nixed.

There is no food or drink after 6 or 7PM (based on work schedules).

That simple approach has worked wonders on the dogs we have had in the house.

But it works in reverse too. Our English Bulldog just turned 14. She is now deaf, blind in one eye and a trip outside makes her breathe like she just completed multiple 100-yard sprints. Before she would go to the door and give you time to get there. Now as she is walking toward the door, we best be walking with her as she no longer has time to wait. As the old folks say about old age, "Once a man but twice a child".

Good luck with the pup. It is amazing how the dogs can be the worst thing in your life and the best thing in your life at the very same time.

Probably why I have more dogs as friends than I do people as friends.

I am on the thinking train that any dog can be trained to live indoors. The amount of time and effort will determine the success rate and ultimately when a person gives up on the endeavor.

We had a Fila Brasileiro once that was a bat shit crazy. Due to shitty breeding by Americans and greedy breeders in Brazil recognizing Americans will drop tons of money on shit, multiple kinds of shit, the breed as whole is in the tank.

This one sort of threw back a hundred or hundred-fifty years ago. He was a roaming protector. Whereas my others slept the over whelming majority of the time (the truest definition of couch potatoes). He didn't like the inside. He would come to the back door, make a couple three laps thru the house, almost doing a room-to-room check, and then go to the back door to re-do his outside patrol. Maybe the best guard dog we ever had. He was a beast.

He was housebroken early but he spent most of his younger life inside the house life standing at the back door, like "there might be some shit popping off outside and my job is to be there".

In the summer heat of NC, in the rain, in the cold, it did not matter he wanted to be outside. The other dogs would raise up their heads and look at him like he was 'stupid and going to fuck up the good life they had'.

    Rambling again,

Jack Russell's can't live inside . Well least mine can't. I cuss the day I ever saw one which was a long time ago . Yesterday I'm cutting grass and I got a deisel so I'm moving pretty good and something plowed me in the back of the head and yep one of my Jack Russell's had escaped .

My sister in law had two Jack Russell's 30 years ago. They were the two killing-est animals I have ever seen. If they got out of their fenced in yard it was like a scene from Helter Skelter. It was a blood bath wherever they went. Rats, snakes, etc..etc..

My brother in law had game chickens. He had a row of maybe 40 birds tied out in a straight line. They got out one day and before she could get to them they waxed 8-10. He told her the next time they got out it would be their last.

They were OK in the house if the whole family was in the house. But if anyone went outside without them they got destructive as shit. Almost like 'take me out or else'.

    They were a handful.

Slim you can't put them on a tie out and swear they could get out of a concrete kennel all sides too and bottom concrete . It's a love / hatred relationship

I never had one. We kept a Patterdale one time and that thing was holy terror as well.

I have a system as well. It is a ton of work, but usually I have a dog housebroken w/ in 2 weeks. This dog took 3 weeks, she was harder than normal. She has not had an accident in 4 days running. I am going to start doing more standard obedience with her. I don't mention my purpose on this forum because it is a very unpopular one, but I like to do PP and Shutzhund with my dogs if possible, but most Pit Bulls simply don't make the grade. It is looking like this gal will. The main problem she will have, a common one for tis breed, is outing, that means letting go of whatever she is clamped down on, usually a sleeve worn by an agitator. She will probably also be DA (duh) which can make handling her hard around the other dogs, although I had one dog who did very well. The GSD crowd that dominates Schutzhund was amazed by her, but like I said dogs like her are few and far between. Why don't I simply start w/ a GSD or Malinoi? I love Pit Bulls and if you get the right one they can be very capable. Physically these dogs are superior to anything else and lb for lb hit harder.

The amount of time I am spending on this dog is huge, fortunately I only work part time and some is from home. Properly training a true game bred dog to live indoors is like a 20 hour a week job.

I had to go back 7-8 generations, which I simply had not done. I was surprised to find she was heavy Jeep. When you say DOY you are talking about a fighting dog. I am after a different goal. I start w/ fighting dog stock (for reasons too lengthy to addresss here) but my goals are quite different.

Having said that, just like people trying to win in the fast lane, most dogs wash out of what I am trying to do as well.

Actually, if I wanted my best chances of success I would go with the traditional dogs, GSD, Malinois or a Rottweiler. Unfortunately, I simply don't like those dogs and would never spend enough time with them to create a great dog. I love pit Bulls and Pit Bulls only. I spend massive amounts of time with this dog because I enjoy it. I spend 4 hours a day with this dog not counting she sleeps next to me. I would never do that with any other breed.

Remember, I am a very weird person. I know that he chances of getting a game bred Pit Bull that will cut it in Schutzhund is very slim....but it is possible. I had one dog that was great and I have been chasing that ever since. The dog has to pass many, many stages of qualifications. First drive and temperament, next obedience. This dog is doing well. I did my first day of work with her on sitting and she passed with flying colors. After just one session she is sitting on command and even holding it for a bit....waaaaay better than I expected. She is walking on a leash after just 2 sessions. She is simply doing exceptionally well. She was a bit hard to housebreak and is still biting, but I will redirect her biting into sleeve work eventually.

Like I said my main concern is she won't out. That will eventually get her disqualified but she is doing really well otherwise. I am going to start looking for Shutzhund clubs, although it will be a while before I contact one. She has to master obedience 100% first.

First step in sch is obedience. It's literally the foundation for the tracking and bite work. She won't make it because you're going into everything ass backwards thinking you know more than you do.

I've done Schutzhund and IPO (Internationale Prüfungs-Ordnung) before. I am focusing FIRST on obedience, so your comment is wrong, as obedience is the foundation for everything, most certainly not ass backwards. IPO is a three part sport which includes Tracking, Obedience and Protection phases – the dog must pass all three phases in the trial. I have done a ton of obedience work and can tell you that only about 10-20% of dogs are cut out for it. Here is the new Schutzhund IPO IGP BH BH-VT Exam Routine watch

Tori is already holding sit/down stays for a full 10 seconds while I walk 15 feet away, outstanding for such a young pup. She has just started obedience work and is excellent at nearly all aspects. I have always been honest about my abilities and lack of. I have never matched a dog, but I have done a ton of obedience and other type of work. I don't talk about it much on this forum because I get ignorant responses (like the one I just qouted).

I have found a good local Schutzhund/IPO club (Working Dog Club of Houston). The first step is getting accepted by the club, a difficult challenge since there is bias against my breed and most everyone else has GSD's. The key to getting accepted is having a COMPLETELY obedience trained dog that is totally under control. I had that once and was accepted. There are dues, probably $1200 a year or a bit more. The bottom line is you have to do lots of work and convince the other members that you are 100% ready to work and most importantly don't just want an attack trained dog. The focus needs to be on obedience.
