Years of scaffold building, gun hunting, skeet and large caliber hanguns has left me deaf in one ear. I also have raging tinnitus in the same ear. I've been considering a high power air-rifle for traps, coon and squirrel. I even saw that Gamo makes an air shotgun now for birds and wabbit!

Who's got experience w/this? I want to hear from the people using the stuff rather than the people selling them lol.

a halfway decent air gun is just as effective as say a 22 for small game such as squirrels and coons.as an added bonus you save alot on ammo and it is much quieter.
ive never heard of an air shotgun but it sounds pretty cool.

The Gamo whisper is decent as far as sound suppression the scopes are crap though..I still like a good 22 better though.:D

that Gamo whisper look's like its pretty cool, but it costs more then some 22 lr's.Maybe just stick to the 22 "not the magnum" use some subsonic ammo and those small ear plugs.

I hunt with an air rifle, but its totally down to guns being illegal where i live. If they were legal i have no doubt in my mind that id have a list of 'real' guns as long as my arm. I have a Wierauch hw97k .22 break barrel rifle at the moment, but have had many gas/spring weapons over the years. Theres not much to say really, other than if you point it at something small and furry and pull the trigger its going down!! If your just going to be taking out squirrels and the like, then i cant see any reason not to get one given what you have said about your ears. You need to make the choice between spring or gas powered and then take it from there and see what you like the feel of.:D

Also, a major factor in deciding what weapon to go for is the range your going to be using the weapon at??

uk res always liked hw 77 or hw80 with a scope they do a good job . but with scottish law being what it is something more powerful would be cool . like to try this airshot gun .im sure it would be illegal here .../

Thanks for the replies. I don't think I'll be shooting anything farther than 40 yrds. I'm gonna start w/a cheapo crossman for $180. It's got the nitro piston instead of the spring and claims you can leave it cocked for hours. I see that pyramid airgun supply is putting the crosman piston into pricier models and claiming how sweet it is. I've got buds w/the gamo whisper and an old diana 34. I'll post up when I get the cheaper crosman and let you all know if it stacks up. I'm gonna get the .22 and hope it's enough to drop a coon out of a tree.

Padlock...... LMAO!! I literally almost lost an eye to hot brass during a night-fire exercise at Ft. Knox. It ended up stuck in my kevlar strap and there's still a bald spot when I let my side-burns grow in.

I use a sub-sonic round in my .22 LR that only puts out 63 decibles. It's like a whisper in the wind.

My hearing issue isn't the only thing pushing me toward the airguns. Fuck me for saying this in an open forum but I got nothing to hide:

I was in sales from '88 to '02. I can't have big boy guns anymore as stipulated in my forced retirment plan. I keep plenty of hardware at a neighbors house and some extremely wicked pieces at my parents farm, but they're definitely not for hunting anything other than the Chinese when they finally decide to run us over:p

Popper, Benjamins are sweet but the new ones have plastic triggers.

Mike, holy smokes batman! I knew the large bore kind that get filled off of scuba tanks would take big game. I woulda never thought a .177 would drop a pig.. That video is nuts!! I'm gonna send for this one http://www.pyramydair.com/p/rws-34-meisterschutze-pro-air-rifle.shtml

I use a highly compressed airgun, shoots a 165 grain pellet at about 2900 fps.

The one the dude dropped the pig w/is a break barrel. Most all the break barrel models do 900 to 1200 fps! I'm gonna stick w/that type for the simplicity and easy maintenance. They come in .177 .22 and .25 cal.

This dude is an airgun super-freak. I think there's even an air-gunner magazine show on one of the outdoor channels now... http://www.americanairgunhunter.com/airgun_hunter.html
