Above ground kennels

I saw the video of the dog fighting deal that showed Sparks and Davis. The deal that got me is how many dogs Davis had in above ground kennels! Cool deal to see boomerang up close like that too. I was in awwww. I never really considered this as an option but it got me interested in how easy or hard it would be to have dogs like this. Considering the options of a lot more room in a smaller area to house dogs and with us, we get the dogs off the chain quite often so that wouldn't be an issue for us but how hard is to keep this area clean for the dogs. I am very particular on the chains and they work well but just wondering. Has one used this as a long time way to keep dogs? Davis was in a hotter place than I live also, I could imagine winter time being a pain in the butt. But with urination, feces it just seems like a pain. Any thoughts from experience with these type of set ups.

Not hard at all. The flooring isn't solid so urine/feces/food fall through the slats. Cleanup isn't too demanding. The rest is up to how hard a keeper the dog is. All of our dogs but one like the pens fine but the one bitch will try to eat her way out and gets a collar/chain setup exclusively.

Now I only have 3 pens so they're primary use is pups, bitches in heat, and rotating dogs around but longer term use isn't out of the question if needed.

Thanks guys. When you used them Naustroms did you have any health problems, just seems like a breeding ground for bacteria to grow in a sense? I am sure a good hose / power washer type setup would do fine in cleaning and probably a once a month bleach session or something along those lines. I am kinda of ocd with clean spots. Just so I grasping the idea entirely, basically just spraying it out everyday is the key and just letting it fall through the cracks and cleaning that area below? I have seen this used with pups often before but never long term on a dog and I am actually buying a metal setup like it from a friend for a whelping area. Is using hog fence the best idea as well ( small hole welded type ), of course chain link is a bad idea IMO, only had a problem once so I will never see that crap on my yard. ( for newbies yes a dog will chew through a chain link fence, go to work in the morning and come to a problem that evening - you will be suprised at how fast a dog will do that! ) I am sure if you have bored dogs that these can become a serious liability, the dog taking frustration out with chewing it.

thats the most common way that ive seen them kept spray out every day rake every other day.keeps the flee and parasite down.grew up in central fl no disrespect to the chain set ups.1984 saw my first bulldog off the ground and still see them that way.1x4 slats with an inch or so spacing spray the same way and cleen up every day or every other, bleach every couple weeeks

he may have been separating the dog maybe before a match keeping sure the dog doesn't catch anything. making sure it will be worm free and avoiding the other dogs. IDK seems to me the best answer, or else that was just its permanent housing setup. i like the part at 10:45 were he has to elaborate on what he meant by a front end, chest and shoulder dog. looks like he wanted to ask the reporter if he was messing with him lol.

yep your right thats crazy. they said he had a 150 dogs. it would be crazy to house all of them like that. ive seen bigger brood game fowl pens than the ones he had his dogs in lol.. such a little tight housing system i would think there paws would be soft being kept like that. all i got to say is wow! lol

    Hardluck,
Yup the biggest brood pen I saw was 20ft by 30ft
And 15 feet tall ! & that was just for one brood trio
( one cock and two hens) and that was huge compared
To mine 3ft by 8ft and 6 ft tall !

The above grounds are actually a cleaner alternative to the dogs being on the dirt. Keeps them away from the bacteria and worms and whatever else. Just spraw down whatever doesn't fall out on its own then clean up underneath. I think hog or goat panel is the best you can get. My pens are 8'x4' and 4.5' tall. The dog houses are attached on the back.

Alot of people in FL pen there dogs, most my buddies down there keep their dogs like that, but they also hunt the shit out of them so exercise in their area of containment isn't important.Like naus said it's more sanitary if maintained properly, and it keeps the dogs up outta the sand (fleas a terrible down there and the sand makes it worse)But if you don't keep up with them pens will get nasty quick!!!

my kennels sit on 6' x 12' foot decks built with pressure treated 1" x 6" lumber and they are stained with a good reputable brand. that is the trick when using wood i have never had an issue.

I can see the benefits but they're just so small. I could see myself using them to separate a bitch in heat but I dunno if I'd put a dog in there for its whole life, just seems cramped. Although I can understand if you have a lot of dogs in a small area.
