Has anyone had to totally revamp a breeding program due to bad traits and bad signs popping up too frequently. Examples shyness, manbiters, derm issues, soft mouth etc piping up frequently in numerous generations? What steps did u take to revamp?

A lot of work...and have to breed to better every litter...so in or line would prove to be of little use. What type of line ya got and where ya trying to go. I personally would not concider breeding, unless it was of a dying line, and could be corrected for sure. A lot of risk, a lot of work, and a lot of cullin?,

I had got some blood at one time when I moved from VA. I wont say any names but I believe they out the dogs now anyway. But on the word of good friend I decided to use some of this line as foundational. The line was a strain of plumbers alligator off a dog that was said to be thrown some good ones and not many people had access to before he died. I should have known better when hammonds did not comment on the strain when we spoke. Also looking back the kennel did not speak of any negative traits to be aware of. After years of culling and corrective breeding I decided to take this as a lesson learned. I had raised dogs for years and researched for years before I bred one dog. But I learned that the person behind the dog you see is as if not more important than the dog. I am also skeptical of those who don't want to share the negative traits associated with the line they work with. When I began dealin with Hammond he was upfront about his lines and warned me of possible traits if bred a certain way. I appreciate a honest dogman as much as a honest bulldog.

everything you mentioned is a consequence of inbreeding. what's the first thing most newbies do when they get dogs??

    inbreed.

Newbie um, true that is true for many novices. However in my case I did more outcrossing than anything. Although the stock was breed tight by the persons I got the stock from. I can say I was much younger then and I put stock in peoples word more back then. I have since only deal with very seasoned dogmen that have a history of sticking by there stuff. And although I had someone take me under their wing I admit I have learned thru trial and error. If we are being honest even expirenced breeders live and learn. I have yet to meet a honest dogman that can't tell you of lessons learned. As for inbreeding if you don't know what you are doing it is dangerous and detrimental to the breed. This goes for those who know just enough to be dangerous to those neophytes who are just breeding without a clue. My experience is not unique as many have stated that have years of breeding responsibly. Just looking to hear some similar experiences and at the same time inform true new fanciers of the pitfalls in hopes to let them know even with knowledge, experience, mentors breeding is not something to take light if you desire to better the breed.

Do you have a ped? some of those do sound like signs of inbreeding depression, or it could be just traits that were bred in by dogs that threw undesirable traits.

I got smaller dogs, slower starting, small teeth(in gneral) and still got the prolapse issue on one of my favorite pups out of the litter doing father daughter. but if only one is gonna be worth a shit she is, compared to the flavor-o-the-month boyles stuff.
had an accidental bro sis breeding with same mama and have smae small teeth issue Id imagine but still have some hope for one.

Cut your losses and start over. Buy several individuals from a proven line that is free of most of the undesirable traits you should be concerned about. Purchase these dogs from someone who has bred or owned all of the dogs in the background for at least 4 generations. Be sure to choose a line that possess dominate traits that suit you and that have a long and prover PRODUCTION record for producing the type of dogs you are looking for. Then line breed the very best dogs from this purchase and your percentage of good dogs produced will increase. You cant make a silk purse from a sows ear. For the sake of all concerned please cull all individuals produced from the breeding program that are not up to par. For the breeder the key word here is PRODUCTION. Be ready to spend some money as this type of quality don't come cheap. Good Luck!

  12. I expect not because bad inbreeding cause inbreeding depression....and the breed's dead !
That's why it's important , sometimes , to do outcrossing with totally different bloodlines.
Outcrossing bring new genes and, for sure, default with F1 or F2.
You could fix your type and qualities with F2 and F3 or F4
THE MORE IMPORTANT would be to select the best puppie and don't breed others. It's the problem because anyone would like to lost money with neutered pups....but it's the only way when you want to do selective breeding and create your bloodline.
Genetic is not a game but it's difficult ...thanks Mendel !!!!
Breeders are legion but serious breeders or hobbyist are not many !
