Was watching People's Court (I know stupid), anyways it was mentioned that in most states dogs are considered property so if someone steals your dog, even if you prove that its your dog in court often times they will only be ordered to pay you the amount of the "property" and dont have to actually return the dog. THATS CRAZY!!!!

The laws differ in different states. In some states you can pay a tax on your dog and they are considered livestock. In others they are property and in some just pets.

Property laws are different in different states however there are some general principles that are almost always taken into consideration by courts. Good faith v. bad faith, custom, nature of the animal, and condition of the animal when taken compared to when the suit is brought (sometimes you would rather have the value of the animal when it was taken as compared to a horrible condition it might be in when you find it). To be honest most of the time judges rely significantly on policy implication of their decisions. Whatever they think is right and the effect the decision will have on the community is what matters...... they will probably be able to convince themselves that the law is on their side.

PS: Hey to everyone. I am new to the cite and learning a lot.
