I'm not going to disagree but I think it is apples and orange comparing the two species.

The plenty of DG men/women knew what they were fighting for, had the ability to reason, defending their family, their selves, their property, their country, their honor. From the outside in we can look and see why they fought to the end/or died for their choices.

The dogs, to me are different, as no one knows why they will continue. If they were on their chain spot we could see some territorial issues as this is mine. If they had puppies maybe they are defending their young. If they were defending their owner maybe we can see that. But for the most part we take them away from their home to an unknown place in front of an unfamiliar crowd they keep going over.

They are released, separated and released countless numbers of times and there is no real explanation why? They just do.

And 99.9% of their fellow species members will choose flight over fight, yet the .1% will not only stay, be run 15+ feet to do it all over again. And again, for no apparent reason other than they simply want to do so.

It certainly takes a Bulldog to win. Mouth seems to be what the newer generation screams about . I am older, I still choose Gameness of mouth 7 days a week. I was taught that if we breed for gameness 1st , the rest will come. If we lose gameness we lose what makes our Bulldog's what they are so renowned for. Best to have a dog with a good bit of everything , just mouth , with out gameness , stamina etc ,, won't beat a good clever game dog with good average mouth ,,

I see the logic in this and makes sense...I believe gameness is what makes this breed stand out from others....but on the other hand going to shows and just watching dogs wrestle without any damage is tragic to me...Not saying mouth is everything but it's a key factor to me....You cant bite back if u losing so much bleed u begin to become weak. IMO

They don't call this the game dog forum for nothing. Gamenes is the most important factor imo. If I get a truly game dog then I feel like a millionaire it's all I want anything else is a welcome extra.
For me it's not how they win the game it's how they play the game. Please send me your game loosers I'll feed them.
Whole lines of good dog's have come from game loosers. I would rather have a game looser any day than a champion with suspect gamenes .

The will to continue no matter what is the trait terriƫr people admire. It is quick lost and hard to get. Kind of holy grail to look for,LOL.

The house you build needs to stand on reliable foundations.. No point putting in fancy doors, windows, staircase and furniture if house subsides and walls crack within 12 months.. IMO same with bulldogs, they should be proven, durable and game, always try cross better mouth, ability, intelligence into them as you proceed, but foundation must be durability and gameness, maybe like when researching cannabis strains, even the best strains today bred down off the old Skunk#1 and that Chemdawg from the Grateful Dead concert, yes some Land-race strains too, but SK#1 the foundation of loads of super strains, so IMO gameness and durability is concrete foundations and SK#1:-B

As for small head or big head? I don't think it really matters or makes much difference if they want to bite hard then they will but the head type I prefer would be what the Kingfish dog's had. The ones I was around had a head type that wasn't overly big as bulldogs go but their jaws were. So no waste of weight they had small feet and whip tails also. I suppose if their opponent had a big head and clumsy great feet but weighed the same then technically the kingfish dogs might of had a slight advantage. Weight for weight they definitely usually looked slightly bigger. The kingfish or Skipper dog's I was around were different in other ways to other bulldogs in their wrestling style. What I mean is they always had an advantage over their opponents if they were raced otc on wet services like mud or wet grass on a sports field. I always used to think maybe the Mason Mennifee dogs that they were from were more old fashioned and therefore more suited to racing on the old fashioned canvas floors they had in the pit before everyone started using carpets. I'm probably just coming out with complete bulshit though but just stuff I've thought about in the past. Big head small head hard bite soft bite none of it makes a difference if the dog stops on all 4s :-?

I suppose conformation has something to do with it, evidenced by the ADBA show standard which imo is well sorted. But of course structure is not the whole story. I have a skinny female Malinois around 50lbs with a narrow head and jaws; lol she don't look like much..but has crushing, hard shaking grips through the suit; her brother (who I've taken multiple bites from) the same.

I like a dog with good conformation , but many many times bad made dogs have proven to be above average in ability ,,

If one has seen true gameness with his or hers on eyes, it will make a grown man or cry. How many times has the loser been picked up and put into a breeding program based solely on "Gameness" It is what it is. I have been there.
