The Great Debate Continues: Did Bullyson Quit?

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by Laced Wit Game, Aug 25, 2010.

  1. Bullyson wasn't 9 years old. Eli himself was whelped in or around 1965 and the Bullyson/Benny Bob match was in 1972.
The 2 matches Eli had were in 1968 and 1969, so for his son to be 9 years old only 3-4 years later is BS.

So , now the stage is set. The unbeatable Bullyson going for his next win against his own son. The place was somewhere near dallas. The day was sunny and extremely hot, the temperature approaching 100. The pit was 20 by 20 with walls 3 ft high. There were bleechers on all four sides with a cheesecloth over the pit for shade. I sat acorss the pit from Bullyson and waited with great anticipation for the "Match of the century" to begin. Both were right on the weight, 52 lbs. The dogs were faced and released in the hot Texas sun. After about 20 minutes, the bleechers started collapsing, one after another , the one i was sitting in was the only one to remain standing, the collapsing bleechers took the cheesecloth with them. Now the dogs were battling it out in the hot sun. It must have been 105 by then and Bullyson was not doing so well. There were cries from the spectators for Maurice to pick his dog up. In something under 1 hour Maurice did just that. There was no attempt of Bullyson to quit or jump the pit and whoever says he did must have been at another match that day. It was obvious , from the start, that Bullyson was simply outclassed and out dogged. But he didn't quit or jump the pit. It's easy to heap accolades on the dead, as well as dumping all over them.

Far as Eli being whelped in 65? that is speculation.. Nobody really knows when he was whelped as the black came out of nowhere.. Spook was only 9 months old when she was bred.. Eli wasnt even a winner yet when that breeding took place if memory serves me correct as i'm startin to slip.. I know Bully died right after the show.. I know he was said to be atleast 8 many said he was 9

DO you believe a dog in shock that stands the line is a cur if you do that is your right and aint nothing wrong with that but i do not, if that dog is in shock and he do not go he aint no cur, i have been boxing for about eight years now and have seen a lot of combat, and i know what it is like to be physically exhausted and stretched out to the point where no matter how bad you may wanna go back you physically can not. and i believe bullysons whol back end was useless. now does this mak my opinion right and yours wrong no chance in hell but it is just what i believe

This is why match making is so important. No way was Bully going to win that match.Everything was against him from the start. Weight, age, and breeding his balls off, pure arrogance by Bully's handlers.Billy D. gave a nice account of the match in the Times years ago.Billy said something on these lines Rick was a friend of mine and I should of asked him what he had, because he would have told me.We was so confident that Bully was going to win.Billy said why did u take this match? This is Bullyson he can't loose. Boy was we wrong. But nobody can deny the importance of Bullyson to the breed of gamedogs. We are discussing him 40 years later almost. How many of else on here can say thousands of people will be talking about us 40 years after we are gone.

I was there and watched Bullyson quit and he quit bad. He was a great producer and there were many winners that he sired. Mayfield's Nigger quit to and was a great sire to. I was there when he quit. I hated them when I saw them quit but after seeing all the good dogs that were fought and did good they sired. I would have loved to own them both. People will make up stories trying to glorify what happened. There was every excuse in the book offered every kind of explanation for what happened. I've seen lots of famous dogs quit through the years. Each time it happened people were in shock and stories begin to spread. These dogs are just dogs. They are not Gods that you can count on for sure. Many a man's heart has been broken by so called good game dogs. Live and learn. Any of them can quit on a given day. See Ya Randy Fox

  10. I can't remember if it was in "Game Dog Times" or the "American Warrior" magazine. But in there I read an article saying the same thing. That Mr. Carver shot Bullyson

Can't argue with someone who seen it ,,, I believe he quit, probably was a burned out dog , I think any good dog can be made quit ,,by bad management , poor condition, old age , or burned out,,, same dogs in 100% good condition maybe deep game dogs in previous matches ,,,

  16. Mr. Mayfield was known to make up a lot of stories. Like I said, I never believed Bullyson was ever shot

  17. Bully was about to be 5 years old when the benny bully match happen. Of course I'm way to young to have been there but several I have tlk to that was there told the same story. An others I kno who were told by different ppl were told the same story. When carver released bully he didn't move an he was so weak he couldn't hold his back end up an his ass end jus fell making him look like he was sittin. There is a picture of him doin so I am told. The dog was in shock. He could not go. So Maurice got out an floyd tried to call him across the pit an he had the stare. If u seen a dog in shock. U know the look. Words were exchanged an floyd handed him to carver an he was dead with in 5 minutes. Maurice didn't shoot him. Ain't no cur that stood gon die with in 5 minutes after leaving the pit. Your a jack ass dogman if u believe so. For a dog to do so he is badly damaged. Jerry worked at a vet office an I'm told his kidneys were shot when examined. Floyd told me for anyone to say they seen bully try to leave the pit musta not really been there. Under the influence or goin off second hand info cuz he couldnt even hold his ass end up An was to weak to ever try an jump out the pit.

  19. Jus seen where me typing all fast at work caused a typing era. Maurice took bully to a vet afterwards an told Jerry about the results of his kidneys etc... jerry before the match examined the dog.

Nothing anyone says will change the impact Bullyson made in the game. Cur, in shock, or any description wont erase his impact.
But having said that how many others that were in shock were labelled cur? Also, why did Maurice go through with the show if Bullyson was in such crap shape? Did he have such disregard for Benny Bob?
Carver was one of the elite dogmen of the day and in history overall, his decision to go ahead doesnt show that though.
But as almost no one on here witnessed the match and goes on what someone heard from someone, who themselves only heard from someone that witnessed it, we debate something without first hand evidence.
Bullyson, Eli Jr and Brendy are behind enough good ones.
