Many people have CONTRIBUTED to the negitive images of our breed, even though some would have you believe ONE group or type of people are to blame. There are so many types of people who give this breed a bad reputation that that it would be foolish of me to try to narrow it down to One to POINT A FINGER.The following have a negitive impact on the breed.(not an all inclusive list)

    1."low-lives"

these people dont care about the breed at all they dont care about mankind.these are what some call the UNDESIRABLES. Two things to remember are that low-lives come in all forms and they do more than gangbang and sell drugs.

    2.irresponsible owners

these people do not take the steps needed to ensure this breed or any other is preserved or represented in a respectable manner.there was once a Gazzete issue that had a Code of ethics and it would be good if all owners of all breeds adhered to good ehtics and were good stewards of these animals but this is not a perfect world. if you watch animal cops they be sure to televise a these owners for all to see.

    3.Peddlers/BYB's

these breed only for money more dogs more money.no regard for health or the status of the breed.this breed is under attack and in jepordy but these say "show me the money" of they just breed for grins and giggles not realising how each litter will effect the breed in general. by the way these breeders are RED,YELLOW,BLACK and WHITE,old and young alike. the love of money is a world wide issue.

    4.NEOPHYTES (NOVICES)

when i very first got invovled with this breed many years ago i was misinformed, misguided, and misled. i did what my peers did untill i began to read literature of those who went before me. well over ten years has passed and ive owned many gamedogs and curs. yet i still have lots to learn and as wall intentioned as i am it takes old timmers to pull up on me and stir me straight. now i dont take all suggestions but i do consider them. i have made mistakes and the pound had a few of my dogs in times past. so if you are brand new to the breed study your breed and get with people who have experience they dont mind sharing. in this day dont be discouraged if people seem cold and tight lipped. these are trecherous days. just keep aking questions and reading what you can get your hands on.EVERYONE had to srart somewhere. and nobody has all the answers no matter how long they have been dealin wiyh bulldogs.what you do does affect this breed and ignorance is not bliss.

this is a true and faithful saying "THIS BREED IS NOT FOR EVERYONE'LETS CLOSE THE CIRCLE" but lets not be SELFRIGHTEOUS,RACIST,or PREJUDICE in our endevors toraise the standards and preserve our great breed.INSTEAD OF PLACING BLAME lets get into the solution. the solution starts with the person in the MIRROR.making distatful and disrespectful comments profit nothing only gender STRIFE.

    GOD BLESS ALL WHO READ

The man problem is the people who sold those "types" dogs in the first place. The peddlers years and years ago who decided to start selling to anyone with the $$ and forgetting about the pup after $$ is in hand!

All other problems wouldnt be such an issue today if the people who do those things wouldnt of had dogs to buy in the first place!

Of course nobody WANTS to fingerpoint. But the reality is, is that some "pit bull" owners are in fact the ones who are ruining the breed & helping to bring about BSL through their actions. So what to do? We, as APBT & "pit bull" owners have got to step up to the plate & begin regulating each other.

This whole attitude of "why can't we all get along?" & "we have to fight together" is not going to work. Why? Because I, & many thousands of others, are not going to fight on the same side as back yard breeders, puppy peddlers, street fighters, those using the dogs as image enhancers, those who think it's ok for their dogs to run around the neighborhood unleashed b/c they're soooo nice, some rescues who are adopting out dogs w/known attitude problems, etc. They want to fight to keep their dogs as well, but yet they are the ones killing off the breed in more than one way.

I'm sure people are asking themselves, "but hey, she didn't list old time dogmen/dogwomen as being the cause & we all know dog fighting is wrong & that's the true issue behind it all". Well, not so. Whether you like it or not (that's not the issue here), these people held themselves up to high standards & also held their dogs up on pedastals. Back in the 1920's when the APBT was by far the most abundant & popular breed of dog, you didn't here about it running around attacking people. And 99.8% of these dogs were "working" dogs. But now the "pit bull" is misquoted, yet still quoted, as the number one biting breed. Now why is that? A whole contribution of factors plays into it & all the types of "pit bull" owners mentioned above are directly responsible for what is happening today. They're just too egotistical and/or stupid to admit it.

So again I bring up the suggestion that many don't want to here. The ONLY way to save our dogs is to get the dogs out of the hands of these types of "pit bull" owners. I will never stand together w/a back yard breeder or puppy peddler or naive twit who thinks she's doing ok by letting her dogs run around off leash. Because if I do, then I've signed my own dogs' death certificates.

So step it up people & being to regulate yourself as well. Keep the dogs out of the hands of those who have no business owning them. Shut down back yard breeders & puppy peddlers by not supporting them in any way no matter how bad you want the cheap dog or feel sorry for the dog. Stay away from rescues that are trying to adopt out "pit bulls" w/known temperament issues & to those who adopt out to just anyone--write them letters & protest. Speak out before it's too late folks....regardless of whose feelings you might hurt.

Good post Mia. I think it's all going to boil down to responsible pit bull owners VS. irresponsible "pit bull" owners. How it's all going to go down, not sure.... Right now it's most everyone against BSL, yet we wouldn't have much of a problem with BSL if it weren't for those who are giving cause to it. It's those people we need to, *ahem*, get out of this breed and give poodles to them instead.

  9. rocksteady

    rocksteady I'll drink to that..

And back in the 20's -30's and before ,there were no leash laws. Dogs ran free.. dogs of all sorts. The biggest difference today is the population of cities and towns has grown tremedously, there are more cars and autos on the roads, etc so containment laws both protect dogs and the public ;) Working dogs do well in populated areas as long as the owners understand they have to keep them busy, engaged in activity and exercised and do so. The problem is too many people get these dogs and crate them all day, dont train, get them on a whim because they saw one on TV or their neighbor has one.. and these are well meaning people who arent "byb" or peddlers.. Its the average respectable, working family whom bites off more than they can chew that also is the problem. when they fail to handle an issue of training /behavoir they pass the problem on to someone else or dump the dog in the country because "it needs room to run"

Exactly. Some people are just plain naive or they jump on the chance to rescue a pit bull without knowing anything about the breed. Lack of education causes lots of problems. It's not always people with bad intentions from the get go, but those who, like you said rock, just don't have a clue as to what they are getting.

NO we cant all get along especially when people are making statement that if it was not for the BLACKS AND HISPANICS the media would not have ammunition to print negative stories and add to the allready marred reputation of our breed. i disagree with this statement and detest the mindset that spreads venomus untruths that corrupt the minds of newcommers and people in general.but i admire the ones who are not ashamed of there beliefs and will express them outright for then i know who i am dealing with.

now DRUGGIES,DRUGDEALERS,EGOMANICS,"HUMANIACS",and IRRESPONSIBLE BREEDERS ALL HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON AND IT IT IS NOT THE COLOR OF THERE SKIN.and some times its neccessary to STATE THE OBVIUOS, SO yes STAY AWAY FROM THOSE WHO OPPOSE THE BETTERMENT AND PRESERVATION AND VERY EXISTANCE OF THESE DOGS.I WOULD ALSO AVOID THOSE WHO TRY TO POINT THE FINGER AT ONE RACE OR ETHNIC GROUP OR AT LEAST GAURD YOURSELF FROM SUCH IGNORANCE WITH KNOWLEDGE AND COMMON SENSE.

    GOD BLESS

YoungLion, what are you talking about. I can tell you 100 % if a mod would of seen that it would be gone, and since there are usually multiple mods on checking every new post, I doubt you seen that here! As a matter of fact, I dont know what nationality or race 99 % of the people on here are....99 % dont know what race I am of......and besides El_Mexicano most members have no clue on what anybody is!

I can see idiots owning this breed from all corners of the world, all races, and all social class and religion. I think your statement was completely unfounded.

Dog men as far back as you can trace sold pups and dogs to help pay for feed and expense of their yard plus putting the dogs in others hands so as to see how their dogs would hold up in different parts of the country. In the old days if a dog showed signs of aggression toward humans they would be culled, plan and simple.

Yes their are back yard breeders in the city selling pups for what ever small change they can get out of them and I do think this is one out biggest problems but putting the blame on Breeders as a whole is ridiculous.

Positive press is a good start.

HOC I do not place blame on all breeders by a long shot. I understand the need for breeding quality dogs, placing them in capable hands, and sometimes even selling a few to cover costs somewhat. However, there is a diffrence between that and breeding 15 litters a year and selling 3/4 of all pups born to anybody with the $$ .

Going through some of my older post. Just realized I may have confused some people with some of my comments that seemed to come from left field. But my original post and comments were prompted by some of the the statements and mindsets represented in this :

    http://www.game-dog.com/index.php?threads/white-woman-with-a-pit-bull.6613/#post-78940

At no time were my comments directed at anyone in this post. Apologies if it seemed that way.
