I dont think Barney Fife ever had much of a yard besides a few he raised,,,
most the dogs that were on his yard where there to be conditioned...
in other words most the dogs on his yard,,, something like 47 out 53 were winners...

His brother St.Benidicts kennels is another storey as he bred and kept alot of dogs...

Fat Bill would call ST.B the blood of the month club as St.B always sought the best producers from Tab to Banjo,,,
the brothers and fat bill didnt like each other and one of barney fifes losses was to bolero...

I think it offended fat bill when barney said bill gave him the run around and if the odds against him were against bolero
she would have beat bill home...

The very reason barney changed his standards and would not drive more than a half hour to a show
as he drove a couple hours to bills spot and than followed bill for a couple more just to return to the same spot where bolero
had been resting the whole time and barneys charge was stressed which he felt was just enough to cost him the very close match...

barney felt most his losses were do to not following a standard and or paying a forfeit if not up to par,,,
standards that made a legend out of him and he might have the best record of all time...

R.I.P... BEN COLOPY aka BARNEY FIFE...

    http://www.gamedogshistory.com/fat-bills-ch-bolero/

barney sharpened his skills at greenwoods and that made for the bolero win a defeat against greenwood
as fat bill was tutored by bullysons owner and on the other side of the country fat bill and bobby hall felt it was a payback...

But nothing beats the classic jimmy boots traveling to the texas heat and making it home victorious...

One of the true innovators in conditioning. The guy that turned me onto the dogs was really close with him. He has always said BF and OS was the two best conditioners of all time. But like I have always been told, and truly believe, the game is about selling puppies. BF never bred a lot of dogs and never kept a lot of dogs. I am not sure of the actual numbers but I have heard it spoken that of a dog was there at 2-2 1/2 years old he was either a winner or getting ready to be a winner. That says a lot.

The deal with Bolero is well documented. We left from NC to SC once, go to the agreed upon spot, and was told the spot was no good. We drove 40 minutes back to another spot in NC. Guys comes out and says we can have the barn the next night but not tonight. They talk on the phone and we drive back to the original spot. We were timing the show to be at 9pm, and had fed watered and adjusted weight to be ready at 9PM. By the time we get back to where we were suppose to be it is closer to 11PM. By 11:30 the picnic started. We were 1.5 pounds light. It was not my dog and I voted to bail on the whole thing and stick them for the forfeit for bullshitting. The owner chose otherwise and Angel won best chocolate pie, and went on to win a championship in chocolate pie making. On the way out it was said, you guys got 'Fat Billed' on the drive around. It happens.

BF was a heck of a conditioner. A heck of a good guy as well.

Dont know if that should go down as good tactics by FB camp,or some shady shit...what you guys think?

For me it is bullshit. If it were my dog that night when we saw the sign that said I-85 I would have been in the north bound lane with them waiting patiently at the original spot. But that is me.

I am not sure if it crosses over to shady, but if not it is up to and touching. It is sort of like being set up and have weight, experience, etc. etc. against you. A person can only be set up if they allow themselves to be set up. If we stipulate a time and I am bullshitting on the spot to throw you off, your job is then to look after your dog and your wallet. If you let your nuts do the thinking instead of your brain and I clip you, in the end it is much your fault as mine.

When you set out to partake in an illegal activity it is hard to complain if everything is not Sunday morning church service nice for every one involved.

I will go with bullshit, won't cross over to shady, but can see how it would get there really quick.

thank you for your posts slim and always a great read,,,
once again alot of us would pay foor a book with such stories...

I like that we spark memories and you relay them well and all the old stories would be great in a book!!!

Nico,,, it is what it is and if you read FB version you can tell he spent too much time in the bolero storey explaining
why so and sos place fell out and he gave barney the run around...

A silver fox trick taught to fat bill by his mentor the used car sales man bobby hall,,,
remember the reason mr hall felt benny bob lost to jimmy boots???

reverse that and those slick oil boys feel it was the big payback...

the difference is greenwood did the traveling and whooped ass,,,
he neutralized the comp before it started as both were stresses but one was rested...

I dont think it was bolero defeating bridget is such a classic as the jimmy b affair,,,
    but it was good!!!

anybody find the story barney wrote about the bolero and bridget encounter???

anybody know how the traveled greenwood neutralized benny bob before the show started( via bullyson 2)???
I m not sure if greenwood used it as a tactic or he just took advantage of the situation...

the best story I have heard of a dog being neutralized before a show
was the story HH told me about the Jeep and Homer affair...

My partner's Angel bitch went on to make Ch. She was a special female. She could run along the river bank and play fight with his two Australian Shephards. She would run along the horses and keep them together. She could climb a chain link fence and never hardly make it rattle. Slept in the house with a Great Dane and a cat. Then take her in a building, close the door and let her see the box. The switch flipped and she was a homicidal maniac. A straight serial killer. And to top it off she would only mix it up for her owner. In a roll once he had a broken leg and let another handle. She looked like shit. They talked him into stepping over the wall and talking to her. She got up off the floor and the only thing between the dog and RIP was the onwer's decision to pick her up.

Maybe that is why he accepted the run around, I don't know. Maybe others feel the same. If I had one just killing shit I may 'take the bait' but be 'baiting' myself. Don't know.

Back to the original subject. Like OS...BC (Fife) could read a working dog as well any one ever. He could see the split second it was time to quit for today or whether one more minute was actually needed. He could have damn near put a patent on how to come off water and basically let the dog dial himself in.

And he was quite the competitor as well. He did not use dex at the end of the keep yet he gave instructions on how to use it. When reading his material one would automatically think he was an advocate for dex usage but in reality he was not. He drew them down naturally, like science. He had a spot where he worked his dogs if someone was visiting. He had another spot where he worked his dogs. If that makes sense. That is why his yard was full of winners and soon to be winners.

I'm a big fan. I learned a lot from him, by proxy I suppose, but from him none the less.

The Jimmy Boots-Benny Bob match took place in California, both sides travelled not just Greenwood. When they first weighed in Jimmy Boots was a smidge overweight, as there was a little bit of time left till kick off Greenwood took Boots aside and brushed all the dirt/sand from Boots feet and made weight just in time.

thanks for the correction,,, I knew greenwood travelled but not the other group to california to boot as
I gathered it was the authors home town venue in the bullyson book...

you are correct from what I gathered from the bullyson book also,,,
was jimmy come in over weight and walked threw a mud puddle on the way in...

benny was in the box going ape shit while greenwood acted like he was walking jimmys weight down(or washing of the mud as he had him down to the ounce) and he brought relaxed and well stretched jimmy boots in Bobby Hall felt Benny had wasted too much energy and that was all the difference...

HH accounts on the Jeep vs Homer match was that Homer was over and ran behind a corvette or trans am in a horse pasture for
a good while to make weight,,, he felt homer was one of the best dogs and should have beat jeep that night but poor condition cost him,,,
in this case jeeps side did nothing to neutralize the comp and homers side did it for them...

B Hall told me the above saying the better dog won, no excuses.
That's the first I've heard on that, I've spoken to both Jeep & Homers breeders/owners and a few others that attended, including HH. Not one has ever mentioned before that Homer was run ran behind a vehicle to make weight. Considering the amount of discussion and writing the match provided, I'm sure it would have been remembered and spoken of well before now if true. I think it's BS.
