Dog off lead attacked my dog

I was walking my jack Russell today when he was attacked by a St. Bernard who was off the lead. The St. Bernard was being walked by a teenager and a kid, had no collar on and as soon as it saw my jack Russell it ran across the road in front of a car and tried to bite my dog. My dog had been having one of his better days walking and wasn't paying much attention to other dogs but obviously when it went for him he was trying to bite back. The guy walking the dog stood on the other side of the road watching when I tried to pick my dog up, I eventually had to say to him to come and get his dog. This is the second time this dog has went for mine. The first time it was out on his own wandering the streets. Is there anyone you can contact about this? It can't be safe to have such a big dog running around off a lead, especially when it goes for other dogs and runs out in front of cars. It's also quite scary when a dog the size of a St. Bernard is running towards you, not sure if me or my dog was more scared.

    Thanks in advance

Animal control. Be careful that he doesn't hurt you tryin to get the dog!! Keep protection for you and your dog, small knife maybe. It's a dangerous world, stay safe

The leash law is intended to protect all parties involved, the sad part is the leash law is treated like a joke and it is also biased and racist towards certain breeds of dogs mainly the pitbull.....you should try and talk to the owner of st bernard first.....if he is not willing to do anything about it you can either call animal control or like cnote said carry some type of protection on you so you can defend yourself as well as your pet.....me personally I would never call Animal control , I would just do Vigilante. LMAO

Leash laws are a joke, and they really shouldn't be. I don't mean we need people to come around policing our dogs, but if you want to own a dog you should have some common sense. However, this won't often be the case. I am constantly put in the same situation, and because I own APBT's, one of which is super leash reactive, I tend to not want to talk to authorities anyway. I've really been pondering pepper spray, I don't want to hurt anyone's dog, but if they won't teach it a lesson someone has to and to let the dogs go at in the middle of the street isn't the best answer in today's society either. I am at the end of my patience with certain dogs to the point that I don't want to restrain my dog anymore, it's unfair to have a loose dog challenging my dog when she's on her leash and I'm restraining her. I also wonder if in this situation if I could properly dispense the pepper spray without harming me and my dog at the same time hahaha. Anyone else have a good solution that will keep folks out of trouble?

Yes, very simple. Leash your animal and keep something to protect yourself. You say people should have some common sense but in my opinion you just showed you lack some yourself. If a dog comes after you, you have the right to protect yourself. If a dog is chasing towards me, I go "boom" and the dog goes down. No need to let it get close to me and find out if he's trying to bite me or my dog.

Large signs around the city park, “dogs must be on leash”, yet every day folks are out there with unleashed dogs. Owners are often foolish cuz they humanize their dogs, “oh my dogs are friendly”. Well mine aren’t toward other dogs, and they’re not children waiting their turn on the swings.

Rabies/Animal Control should be contacted. At a minimum, they can warn the other dogs adult owner. You may not be the only complainant either. This may have been an honest accident and you'll get a positive result. If the dog is not registered, it could be impounded at owner’s expense. Owner can also be ticketed for violating loose dog ordinance.

Needless to say, maintain awareness and protect yourself/dog at all times.

I have my neighbor behind me his dog has jumped into my yard and as soon as he saw what was on the other side he jumped back into his yard. I've seen him peeking over again he almost came over this morning. What do I do when he comes over and things get bad??

I also encounter the same problem. I carry a very loud air horn . They are used for boaters ,alerting other boaters of there presence Check out amazon for they sell them. The loud sound startles most dogs and people too, stopping these .mutts in there tracks. Worth a try imo. Good luck

I carry my grandad's old 3 1/2 foot hardwood walking stick. If nothing happens, I'm just a cripple with a walking stick ;) But if someone's dog wants to run over and have a try, the nice rounded knot for a handle across the nose sends em curring back to their dumbass owner

In all reality There is not much I can do I'm just not into breaking up a fight when I don't know the other dog. The owner is very weird dude. I should get his name at least. Then I can yell the owners name to come help if something happens. The first time the dog jumped over the owner saw it and didn't say a thing no apology or nothing.

I totally know where you're coming from. There are so many bozo's at my park with there dogs off leash. Nobody has control of there dog either. They just let them run all over. I'll tell you a quick story. There is a guy who i used to be friends with for 5 years or so. He owned a female GSD, and now this past year got another GSD. A big male. The dog is very aggressive to most dogs yet he refuses to put him on a leash most of the time. One day, my niece, nephew, my Mom, my dog, my niece's female lab, and myself were sitting in the middle of the park. When here "he" comes both dogs off leash walking around the park. So we wait for him to pass a ways so we can leave. Well he isn't paying attention and here his male GSD comes sprinting towards us from maybe 60 yards out. When he gets to us him and my dog just start going at it. Keep in mind this dog has already tried to attack my dog 3 previous times. The guy even puts a muzzle on his dog sometimes! So im dancing around trying my hardest to keep my dog off balance and really going to town, and give the GSD every chance to retreat. But he doesn't want to retreat. He wants to get some. Finally he decides its not worth it and starts trotting back to his owner. All of a sudden his owner starts screaming at me from across the park " You need to get that damn dog fixed! I've been meaning to tell you this for a long time... you're not the alpha of your dog! bla, bla, bla. So i yelled back, this is the fourth time dude! My Mom said some stuff to i can't even remember, haha.
But anyways the guy never appologized and now he acts like i don't even exist. Which is fine by me, but he continues to let his dog off leash. This GSD has attacked 5 other dogs i know of too. If i see him i literally will walk the other direction.
Its been a big problem. The worst thing is i thought me and the guy were cool. I feel he had a vendetta against me and my dog all along, and that's the most unsettling thing about it all.

If he comes on your property you don't have to break up the Fight. To avoid the Fight next time just shoot the dog when it Comes on your property. Send a registered letter to them beforehand so you cover your ass
