I believe Lester would have been 90 in April. He hadn't been well the last few years but I doubt there will ever be another person in dogs like him. Before he was sick, he enjoyed visitors at his house and if he was away for awhile, he'd often leave the door of his house unlocked so visitors could go inside and wait for him. Anyone could just show up at his place unannounced and he, his wife and son would take time to show the dogs, show his memorabilia, etc. His wife said that one time they were in town and when they returned, a car from N.Y. was at the house.

Lester and the family went inside and the people who owned the car were sitting around in the house waiting for Lester. One of the visitors was taking a shower. Lester and his family didn't mind. As far as I know, nobody ever tried to steal a dog from him, of course, one call from Lester to the neighbors, and every road off the mountain would have been shut down before a thief could get away.

The first time we ever went to his place (his old place on the other side of the road, with cable runs over the creek), my son (11-12 at the time) called him and got directions. After that, he told us it wasn't necessary to call, just show up anytime. When my children were small, the girls would sometimes play in the puppy pens with the puppies. Once, they stayed in the pen for a particularly long time and Lester said, "let them take whichever puppy they want." I didn't take one that day because I didn't have room for many dogs, but I've always appreciated the nice gesture.

Lester was a good man who liked his dogs and he liked people. He'll be missed.
