Supplementing with Orijen

Is it ok to use Orijen as a "topping" on my 13w/o pups normal kibble?

 

pick a feed & just stick with it. don't be mixing different brands of kibble. don't even feed " puppy" food just feed regular high grade feed & there going to be just fine. we normally feed evo but are switching to redpawdogfood.com | Fitness Food for Dogs pups & grown dogs going to be on the same feed.

 

I bought a 5lb bag of orijen so she can taste something different, but I dont want to switch her to high protein kibble. I probably should have bought something a little more similar to her current kibble, but I have it now, and Im not going to waste it. I've been adding a small amount into 1 or 2 out of her 3 meals a day. Im also using it as treats. She has no allergies, and is not a picky eater at all. This wont be detrimental in any way until the 5lb bag is gone, right?

 

BB ain't a fan of giving treats to pups. can't say what's detriment your dog because i don't know the dog. we have always feed "high protein" feed from pups to grown dogs with few exemptions over the years. stick with the orijin because it's a good feed & certainly better then O'l roy or similar.

 

Take the human value out of your relationship with him and you both will be happier. He doesn't get the concept of a treat. Its all just food for him. Like BB said just pick a good feed and keep him regular. His digestive tract will be happier. I didn't say don't love the little fella, just don't forget he is a dog so he thinks like a dog.

Three meals a day, ever heard that before, for a healthy dog. How do you all train your pups/dogs without treats?

 

A lot of folks feed young pups at least 3 times a day; they are doing a lot of growing in this time frame and the body needs constant nutrition to fuel that growth. As the dog's metabolic rate slows with age, feedings can be reduced to one or two times a day, depending on what works for your schedule.

As far as training, anything that motivates the dog can be used- not just food. For some dogs, a favorite toy is much more valuable than a piece of kibble.

 

can't stand dogs that are motivated by food.been lucky on the training because they basically train themselves by learning from the older dogs.

 

Supplementing one kibble with another is pointless. Might as well use something like tripe, or liver, etc..

I dont train with treats, she'll get a treat or 2 after we come in from outside and when she goes in her crate when I leave for work. She also has great "role model" adult dogs to learn from. Anyway, she is doing really well with the orijen but I think im going to switch her to Grandma Mae's Country Naturals Grain Free (als). I like the ingredients and the protien, fat, and calcium % for my young pup.

 

How is it any different from mixing kibble with canned as many people do?

Mixing can food is not needed, keep it simple. The dog does not know the difference its all just food to him. Waist of your money and effort. You want to make him happy, play and interact with him. Dogs thrive on routine, I believe just from reading all these food post on this site people over do the food part of dog.
If your just raising a pet keep it simple.

 

Maybe it is not needed, but you could say basically anything is not needed. For example, a dog will grow perfectly fine on regular kibbles n bits. Premium kibble is not needed. About mixing, I think its ok. I think a dog should be exposed to different ingredients sometimes. It's the reason why you gradually mix kibble when switching foods. Also, dogs can develope allergies to certain ingredients later on in life.

 

Healthy dogs are all that matters. I know there will always be someone that has a different opinion, and that's ok. I have my opinions. I think what im doing is healthy for my pup, and I also think your dogs on chains outside is wrong

 

I'm raising animals not humans. I have been on countless missions were lives were at stake clearing roads and buildings clearing them from things that go boom. Everything was good till you went with that cheap shot. It's cool I respect your opinion.
