a very important aspect in breeding is DRIVE wind doesnt equal gamness and niether does mouth, gamness is your dog DRIVE to want to still be there! me personally i like mouth because all thos long winded dags are doin is slobbering on a dog for hours that reminds me of puppy play because your wind doesnt mean anything if your dog cant stand a hard bite and have the drive to not care and risk a limb or two to stay in there for u!

From Garner's website: "Garner's Chinaman was the foundation and prototype for my Pit Bull breeding program. Not only was he conformationally perfect (he is the breed standard for the Sporting Dog Registry), he was tested at Stanford University and found to have oxygen assimilation capabilities (as assessed via VO2 max) equivalent to top Greyhounds."

So he was apparently a hard-mouthed dog that also had excellent wind. But as people are suggesting, a dog that is naturally good might never have to show a high level gameness if he is beating other dogs in short order. Still, if you had an enthusiastic, hard-biting, great-winded dog with nice conformation, you would probably use that dog heavily in your breeding program.

Haha - interesting analogy. I would put my money on Tyson too. But what if the contest started with a hard 30 mile bike ride followed by a 3 mile run. Then Armstrong and Tyson stepped into the ring. That would level the playing field a bit.

I think a better comparison would be Bruce Lee vs. Lance Armstrong. From every account I've read Bruce hit as hard as a man twice his size. He kicked the shit out of those guys in Enter the Dragon and Return of the Dragon. Though I'm sure he had good wind too..

"All those long winded dogs are doing is slobbering all over each other for hours." Pacc, I have no idea why so many state that because a dog has wind that it is doing what you said. With any ONE attribute any dog may have, the rest varies. The same goes for a GAME dog vs. this or that type dog. So many think and say that because one alludes to a dog being GAME, that it means that's all it is, and that is pure hogwash, both on the air issue, and the game issue.
To assume these things is to be shortsighted.
This one thing vs, one other thing scenario is actually ridiculous. And, it seems that these false assumptions that I mentioned, also go along with them. IMO, one often has just not seen enough dogs to make these comparisons, therefore these faulty assumptions get expressed.
If one proclaims a dog game, if asked what kind of dog it is, others often assume that the dog is a plug, and call him such without ever seeing the dog at all. Same with wind. Same with bite.
"Why are so many hard mouth dogs curs?" Common question. It's simple. Because most DOGS are curs. In kind, "Why are so many good winded dogs slight in mouth and don't have a full arsenal of weapons?" Because MOST dogs don't have a full arsenal of weapons. However, to assume that because any dog has one outstanding asset, that it has no other, is absurd.
I believe that if one sees a greater variety of dogs, and sees them for an ample amount of time (years), they will be less prone to having these faulty assumptions.

I think what you mean is that to be really good in one area is rare, to be good in two areas is rarer, and to be good in three or more areas is rarer still. But if you see enough dogs over time, especially from lines that do well in a competitive environment, you will see dogs that are very good in more than one area, or really good in one area, but pretty good in others. And seeing a dog that is well-rounded will be very valuable when forming opinions. But when choosing dogs for breeding, aren't most people in a situation where they have to try to balance the strengths and weaknesses of dogs, since perfect dogs that have really beeen tested are rare?

    Greats posts TDK!
Off topic but I wanted to continue the human comparisons that were stated above. Obviously its much different in dogs and men but...A couple years back my camp and I were out in Vegas for the Frank Edgar vs Gray Maynard 2 match. I'll never forget the feeling watching Edgar display human gamenesss, and all of us collectively were feeling the same thing. My brother was doing the old Floyd B. chant "THATS A GAME DOG SON!!THATS A GAME DOG SON!! People around us thought my brother was crazy but we all felt the same. Maynards nickname is the "Bully"..he did just that early on in the match, hurting edgar badly in round 1..it was shocking to see Edgar weather the storm and ride his wind and gameness. The match ended in a draw. One of the best fights I've ever seen in person. The 3rd match between the 2 started very similarly..Maynard hurt Edgar early on but was unable to finish. Again, Edgars wind and heart carried him. He stopped Maynard in the 4th round via tko from punches. I know its different in men and dogs but Frank Edgar is a game human being.

E.D. you touched upon some scenarios which are within what I said. What I posted, I mean in no roundabout way. I meant it spot on.......as literal and poignant as possible in regard to the overall topic and the possible scenarios within it. The topic "Question", as I said, is moot, anyway. So are the faulty assumptions so many are prone to regarding the varied assets in these dogs.

Lol that is an interesting apology.. Tyson was probably the hardest hitter in his time but he fought a bunch of no names (curs) that's why he looked so great..it wasn't until he met people with at least half his power and better conditioning he started getting whipped ( Douglas, Lewis, Holyfield). That being said ima make a assumption that maybe a well winded dog with just enough mouth would take the edge..just an assumption folks

you didn't see bob slap tap then . nogueira had 12-13 seconds left of the match and he was getting killed the whole time . someone find that fight it's on pride and post it if you can . dogs that's are smart and could keep a calm head had the best chance . a hard mouth was nice but you still need the number 1 thing gameness . nogueira showed gameness like no other man I've seen . he had the wind at the end to put a arm bar on from the bottom to win . if he didn't have wind he would of never been able to finish his hold . I think there was 2 seconds left. that's game right there . I bet lance can hang with Tyson his mind is screwed . so you just don't let him catch you with a good 1 and he runs hot because he gets mad and can't catch him . same as dogs you would think .
