For the Gun Nuts/Ear Protection

Would like recommendations for some serious ear protection. I already have a damaged ear, so want something that will reduces noise significantly. I'm thinking of wearing ear plugs along with earmuffs, sounds like overkill, but I need it.
Looking into finally acquiring a firearm, most likely a .38 special revolver (keeping it simple) and perhaps a shotgun. Will most likely be practicing at an outdoor range, want protection that works well indoors too (if needed).
Was wondering which plugs and muffs are considered top of the line. Thanks in advance.

Use plugs and muffs and make sure the plugs are in right

i always wear plugs and muffs....nothing fancy, no high dollar stuff but it works. ive lost most of my hearing in my left ear from years of shooting without protection, and i dont wanna lose any more.

if youre looking for a nice revolver at a decent price, go with a police trade in. heres one i recently picked up for $300...

actually theres alotta folks who do buy supressors for that exact reason. theres some paperwork involved, and i believe a background check, but it is a smart solution. ive shot a few pistols and rifles with cans on em and it is definitely quieter...not completely silent, but the decibel levels are cut significantly

    Thanks for the replies.
Lee: I appreciate the advice, I'll definitely look into that possibility (ie. trade in). I'm sort of leaning toward a S&W J type. It would be for personal defense and maybe home defense.

Saiyagin: I was wondering what the laws were on putting suppressors on a shotgun?

excellent decision, S&W makes the best revolvers out there and the J-frame is one of my favorites. i love my 3" pro series model 60 and have been carrying it alot lately. are you looking for a carry gun thatll double as a home defense gun?

my model 60 .357 and a Bianchi paddle holster. excellent concealed carry pair, and the 60 has a Trijicon nite site from the factory so its an excellent choice for a home defense gun...

Yes, would prefer a gun that can do both, personal and home defense. I was thinking the shotgun would be good for home defense, but there's always the risk of a long gun being wrestled out of your hands. But shotguns do have that "intimidation" factor.

if you plan on protecting yourself, dont think that intimidation alone will do the job. some folks arent intimidated, theyre either very brave or very stupid so dont think that pumping the action is instantly gonna scare the badguys away...they often have guns as well and arent afraid to participate in a gunfight. if you pick up a gun and NEED it to protect you and yours, be 100% prepared to use it.

*add...get a well made gun, proper ammo for defense, whip up a gameplan just in case, and dont forget to practice practice practice.
having a gun doesnt automatically make you safe....you gotta be proficient with it.

    absolutely! Thanks for the advice.

I'm just grateful to live in a country where we the "common" man has access to firearms......at least for now! Hope it stays that way.

The J frame Smiths are good guns.I usually carry Glocks but I have carried a S&W 36 and a S&W 60 for a while and liked them. BTW,I love the Hickok45 videos,he's pretty cool.

Never count on intimidating someone, unless your idea of intimidation means bullets on target. I'd hate to think someone would be scared off by the shotgun and they shot me during that split second of seeing if they were intimidated. If someone is in your home and they're a perceived threat, the moment you level the gun on them, fire. Shotguns are a great home defense gun though.

agreed....as long as you dont fall for the "dont have to aim them" bullshit. being on several gun forums, it seems theres always some idiot telling everyone that he picked a shotgun for home defense because all you need to do is point it down the hall and pull the trigger. WRONG...an 18" cylinder bore barrel will keep a 3 inch tight pattern at "across the living room" distance so ya better be aiming.

I always aim.I didn't mean it to sound like that.I like sights on my shotguns,a good set a sights make a shotgun a much better weapon than just a bead.I keep a shotgun handy, but also other weapons as well.

i know ya didnt, i was putting that out there for the op. seems some folks get most of their knowledge based on movies and then spew that shit all over the internet. on thefirearmsforum i did a little test with a couple silhouette targets, one of my short barreled shotguns and various types of shells at different ranges just to prove to the idiots that you DO have to aim or youre gonna miss. i took pics of everything just to prove my point. it all started over some 20yr old punk telling me i was stupid for not having a pistol grip on my home defense shotguns.

The pistol grip shotguns are some of the most ghettofied, ignorant, most impractical things I've seen. I know people who have them just to look cool, but looking cool don't win gunfights, lol. If it's equipped properly a good 12 gauge shotgun can be such a versatile weapon,it's a shame more people don't get one set up right in the first place. It don't have to be anything fancy either, just a good pump (I have Rem 870's and Ithaca 37s) with a good set of sights can do a lot,it'll handle birdshot and buckshot to slugs for a little more range.Take care of rabbits, squirrels, birds, bear, deer to home intruders, about as versatile as a gun gets. If a guy could only have one long gun,it'd probably be what I'd choose but glad I don't have to just have one, lol. Don't you love when 20 year old kids try and teach you stuff, lol
