Started out the same way years ago when first started venturing into raw...got free scraps n bones from a local slaughter house, & got chicken backs n other parts from a poultry house for 10cents pound, but then word of mouth made the place to popular, & their prices kept going up, & now its 40cents a pound the last time I purchased from them!
Just gotta keep your eyes open for other meat sources, & not just settle for 1..you know!?
At times I would also get leg quarters when on sale at The Farmers Market for 39cents a pound. Also got another slaughter house where I get very quality beef for 50cents a pound, & ground up whole chicken meat bones n all for 50cents a pound, plus they give me free meaty beef bones...then recently got a new hook up for chicken thighs 18cents a pound, & chicken drumsticks for 18cents a pound!
So to sum it all up...keep your eyes, & ears open, & then new doors n sources will open over time!

a lot of farms produce animals that are not viable to raise (piglets , calfs), these get dumped , try to get them from your local farms

or go to a slaughter house, that's where I get the best tripe and bones

  4. Here in my neck of the woods which is NC. We buy are meat from Cruse Meats and we buy our poultry from Rocky River Foods and Broome's Poultry.

  5. If your going to buy your meat at a food store, if you have a membership either at Sam's, BJ's or Costco you can buy the meat in bulk at either warehouse.

Ethnic markets, local butchers, specialty meat shops, and ask family to save there meat scraps for you.

  7. I just got a 40# score from a woman who was getting a good chunk of her meats from a local food bank. If you don't mind older stuff. But mostly I buy through a wholesaler/restaurant supplier. They have great bulk pricing. After a while you figure out what the local places are to get good prices.

chicken might not be meaty enough...i would do 1/2 chicken back and 1/2 leg quarters...i buy mine in 40 lb cases...quarters are about 60 cents/lb and backs are 35 cents...so essentially less than 50 cents a pound on meat...then you add organs, yogurt, egg...and your veggie/fruit pulp
