Behavior traits with bloodlines and how they differ etc

    Hi All,

I'm new on here, but been fan of this breed for years. I would like to start a thread on various bloodlines, to discus which bloodlines have certain behavior traits, weights and build type Appearance etc.

Would be great to see what type of bloodlines are the larger dogs and have certain behaviors. I know there crossed with various lines, but some always represent stronger lines than others depending how there bred etc etc.

I've heard a lot about Jeep, Red boy, Mayday being the larger dogs, usually Red / Buckskin. they say they tend to be for the Pro only ? (not sure how true this is and why)

Patrick dogs, appear to be the smaller type. However, I have seen some large Patrick dogs also. I have a lot of people telling me, that this particular line is a witty bloodline with good character for an ideal Pet.

Also, I don't hear much about the OFRN these days ? how are the Hemphill/Wilder/Norrod lines ? Most seem to choose other bloodlines nowadays, Eli, chinman etc for example ?

Been a while since I have seen any Sorrels etc? Not sure why within the Working community, these lines are now a minority or am my I wrong ?

Any info would be great. Obviously, we all want our dogs to have good heath, so long winded and athletic and can take Whatever task is provided.

Any info, Opinions would be interesting to see

If you're looking for a pet, go OFRN or possibly a young rescue dog or pup. These dogs most times make out to be greatest pets but also some peoples nightmares. I'm not referring to Human Aggression, I'm talking about the consistent intensity that they have and what may trigger their prey drive off.. Often people want a bred dog for this or that, and sometimes these beautiful dogs don't want to be lap dogs or lying around the house especially when their newness wears off and their not cute and cuddly any more. Then they become rescue dogs or worse. If color, and size are the main things you're looking for there are plenty pups young dogs and adults who need better homes and might appreciate that setting.

    Hi,

Many thanks for your reply, I agree 100%. But I was refering more traits on each line and how each differs from one another, wheather it's the size, chracter, color, temperment etc.

To me, a pitbull is an all round workng dog. We know where the rep has come from, but a pitbull can make an all round animal, providing it's bred right not just for one thing, but for everything.

Some lines may have particular traits they're known for,but when you're getting a dog make sure that the parents have the traits you want because just saying things like "eli dogs are hard mouthed barnstormers, redboy dogs are game, this line is little and this one's big" etc etc is making to large a blanket statement.Look at the individual dogs and their individual traits. With that being said some lines are known for certain things and holds true sometimes but not all the time, keep it in mind maybe but look at the dog as an individual.

I don't know if I'd say they're an all round dog,in my experience most things made to be an all round anything, whether it be a gun, tool, car or whatever tends to do everything reasonable but nothing great. That may sound like I think the APBT is a bad dog,but they're things i would rather have other breeds for. If a person starts trying to make a all round animal out of the APBT then i'm afraid they will be getting away from being bred right. But a APBT bred for all the right reasons can still do other things also.

Definatly truth in that. I know for example, a GSD is a Guard Dog. However, with any breed dog, they are all basically domesticated animals. So for example, if someone breaks into your house, a PetPitbull I think would do what a dog would do.

Then again, if there kept on a yard, chained a few meters from the "house" then there's not so much territory for the animal. Guess its all how there kept. But id rather own a dog that not bred for a gurad dog, cannot trust the damb thing with anyone.

Thanks, good points. In some cases, it's better to purchase an older dog, but this could also be a negative. I think in general, any Pitbull fan wants a long winded and athletic, Game, Intelligent etc Dog regardless what they use it for.

With all these different lines, it can be a gamble of luck. Which is why I wanted to see what people have found in General to work, then this narrows a few areas down to choose a bloodline

What I meant was get a dog off parents that have the traits you are looking for, it's good to get a grown dog if you know who you're getting the dog from.Or you might be getting something someone didn't want to.Everything is a gamble. As far as certains lines being best, they all can work and all have good and bad. Like some people like Chevys and and some like Fords, when in reality it's all in how you build the engine with either, same with the dogs. Personally,I feed Hammonds and Hammonds/Chinaman crosses mostly,it does what I want it to.But I have other dogs bred differently that i like and other people have different bred dogs that are good too.

gh32 is right, look at the parents of the dogs you are considering. If they have the traits you are looking for your odds are higher that so will their offspring.
You can not go by a line of dogs, (rbj, chinaman, ect), because every yard of the same line may be completely different. And a 1 to 3 year old dog that fits the bill is also a very good choice.
The best dog I ever knew was a 2 1/2 year old police seized dog my father got in the late 70's. And I mean in every way, smarts, temperament, loyalty, athleticism, ect.

Some traits do show up more often in certain lines but it really does come down to the individual dog like gh32 said. I have seen litter mates that were complete opposites. One that was naturally long windes and had a soft mouth and his littermate brother that was a short winded dog that was hard to put through a keep, hard mouthed and scratched like a bullet.

i have had my share of experience over the years with many rb dogs as well as rb/jeep and rb/jocko dogs and i would have to disagree with this statement. mine have all been good dogs (exept for one human aggresive bitch)...on the yard and in the house, but i keep em busy. any dog thats bored or frustrated from a lack of stimulation will chew shit up, no matter how they are bred.

They also tend to be noisy and pretty rowdy too. Sometimes they can be a pain in the... but. It can be a love/hate relationship at times, but I wouldn't trade mine in for any other bloodline.

That is true Lee D most destructive Redboy dogs I have seen were on large yards, but I had a few that chewed everything and I dont have alot of dogs. Some lines are known for different things but I judge individuals and imo thats the best way. Yis Ole Man

I forgot to mention they are noisy and rowdy. As you said H-man wouldn't change them for anything.

I very got an OFRN dog that couldn't bite through a soggy chip but she has an INSANE prey drive... great family dog but you have to know what you are getting into with regards to a bloodline/strain. Do your research and also realize that all dogs are different in their own way. A bloodline is not a garuntee of what you will get but it helps to have a general idea. In my case the breeder was right on, but you never know.

HAHA any game bred pup will chew on anything! Keep toilet paper towel out of reach. Stuffed animals also. Shoes. Got a heavy frisco pup and he loves to chew on ANYTHiNG! My 6month old pup and my 2 year old son are best friends. Like i pick him up from his moms and he says "Where is my Deuce?!?!?" lol Any game dog Thrives on attention! And if that means getting yelled at for chewing on stuff then he will do it lol. Anyways. Good luck
