I've got a 13 week pup and I'm feeding him chicken thighs with the bone. He loves it. I'm just concerned he's not chewing up the bone enough...Before the thighs, I had him eating chicken legs, but he was swallowing too much of the bone IMO.
My question: Is this too early for him to be digesting bones?

  2. Im not a fan of bones in feed , not saying its not good just had some bad experiences. . Try feeding a few tbsp of olive , wheat germ , flax , cod , salmon or another type of healthy oil to ensure that he passes it . . I almost lost my best dog due to impactment . was a very rough time , lots of sleepless nights

I've fed them leg quarters as soon as they came off the tit and no problems. I did watch them eat for the first couple of weeks though.

Thanks. I'm going try the olive oil.

It's fine, just watch them whenever they eat! I doubt they'd be able to really crunch up bones but would do good chewing off the meat and maybe little pieces of bones.

Just watch em and make sure they're not swallowing large pieces.

Shit my dog swallows chicken thighs whole lol a dogs stomach is made for digesting meat and bones, and if the dog cant digest all the bone it will usually puke it up in the a.m. with some bile. Never had an issue with a dog and raw bones.

If a 13 week old pup cant crunch a chicken leg bone I'd be looking for another pup. They should be at 5 weeks.

If you are thinking your dogs now chewing good, just get a good chop block a sharp meat cleaver and just chop chop them just cut them to chunks we feed raw your pups shuold be just fine at 12 weeks Hell I seen dogs tke the whole leg and all gulp and Id be thinking OH shit I better dig a hole Im talkin bout big deer bones and the dog just is fine, Hell a deer bone crushed looks like knive blades and the dogs have no problem crunching and passing them, But at first if you want to cut it and it does help , I feed chicken in 2 inch or so chunks froze hard. Ahnd the pups and dogs allways have hard stool it seems when they impact the get a tutch of the runs first then you may have to go get a bag of olroy for him lol

I used to give my dogs whole chicken wings, and they love them. But they would break them up a bit and then swallow. From what I could tell, they were swallowing sections of bone that were about 1-1.5" long. They never had a problem with the exception of occasional blood in their poop. But at some point I decided to run the chicken pieces through a grinder first. I had a Maverick, and it worked for quite a while, but then the bones finally burned the motor out. There are heavy-duty grinders, but they're pretty expensive ($600 +).

LMAO, oils to pass bones. This is fn crazy to see. Oils have nothing to do with a dog passing a bone and passing a bone. If a dog is fed a RAW diet he is pass poop and if there is bones showing up in stools, there is a serious problem here!!!

best to start with a little grinded raw.

  16. There should be no prob in pups eating raw chicken bones.. just always remember never to feed cooked bones.. though i havent experience feeding a pup with raw chicken since i started feeding raw when trish was already 1yr 1mo old.. but i saw friends of mine feeding their 2mos old puppies raw chicken.. and they dont have problems at all..
