Have been noticing a remarkable likeness off some old dog type re-appearing after many generations. These pheno-types are remarkably similar many generations and may be due to habitual BYB practice. Which normally presents itself by folks buying a male and female pup from the same litter and breeding them. The 2nd generation pups are then loosely bred in the same area or neighbourhood. In the 3rd generation these dogs are very tightly bred usually brother x sister dam x son sire x daughter. Aswell as repeat breedings this creates a small gene pool with very little outcrossing. This could be akin to what happened in Cork in Ireland with the OFRN. Not necessarily producing the same quality but as folks of limited resources have less opportunity to acquire new blood that tends to lead to more breeding with the same stock in a very small community. howe's tiger lilly.jpg howe's gypsy.jpg hibernian's toney.jpg

Good selection should produce better dogs, thus raising the average of each strain (new or old). The problem with your example is that most probably many wrong decisions were made with those dogs in their background already, long before they got them.
But there will always be some good dogmen who are able to beat the genetic make up of a dog. May it be through good selection or through sheer luck. You have to work with what you got.
It can't be wrong to know what you are doing in first place. And when someone finally knows how what to do and why, then he should be able to select better bred dogs for future plans.
btw. OFRN isn't the same like the OLD FAMILY dogs of Ireland. OFRN are crosses of the early strains in America. But probably with the intention to re-create (throwbacks ?) those Old Family kinda dogs.

And if this thread is going to be about the color of a nose, then I would say, yes, if you keep em tight then you might end up in a strain of dogs with pure lol recessive genes, visible in a yard full of reds. It's easier to cull the black genes. Those hidden recessive genes are somewhat harder to catch and cull. All it takes is a small shot of a recessive gene in one of your foundation dogs.
But it's all about percentages and odds. Breeding is not always a gamble, sometimes it's just that, breeding. And breeders do know the difference.

think what your seeing is the result of high demand for anything with a rednose and the fact that most who bought them dont care to much beyond the colour of the dogs. also that alot of them dogs that were sent to the uk aren't bred the way they are supposed to be

That is very true........but these types are all focused animals that are hard driven and love their work inspite of dodgy peds and BYB. They are not the usual rednose crap but worth all their food and time it takes to pick up their shit.

The rednose has become a badge of ridicule in the UK but these working examples are awkwardly stubborn and hard to live with. A bitch was sent to Ireland to be breed with the pablo dog.......she tried to eat him and they said that she was the best that THEY had seen. She has been bred back to other working uk stock after several dangerous attempts. Hopefully the pups show more decorum than their parents.

What you have is a mongrel. Theres no need to put in Ambull blood to get black noses. Plenty of pure with black noses about without the need to cross to other breeds. The majority of red noses in the uk are mongrels very few are pure or have a ped.
