an eye for a good pup

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by hnelson, Mar 16, 2012.

  1. i have seen shy dogs turn hot and cold dogs turn game, i have seen game dogs jump and curs scratch them fleas like a bat out of hell, but i have never seen a defected dog correct its undershot jaw or a perfect conformation dog turn into a bow legged bully. . choose your pups on something you can see not something that you can imagine. who cares how they act its a puppy. pick the one built to be the best for your likeings . I know i want thick hide deep chested well coformationed hounds . so i pick the pups that fit that standard and cull from there.

  2. never said i can pick a great pup everytime. you must have missed my point. there are alot of good dogs with shitty conformation that are game but how many ace's? . all im saying is you have the same chance of a good dog either way so why not pic the one that has the body more in tune for the job? remember they both have the same chance of turning out well but if they both turn out what one would you want?

Well many game dogs had flaws of some sort some more drastic than others it didn't stop dog men from breeding them If they could preforme or produce well. If they look good doin it that's even better lol but lets face it they weren't bred for looks they were bred for gameness. Could structural faults affect performance yes indeed doesn't change shit though when it comes to these hounds gameness comes first. But if that's you're respected method for choosing pups so be it don't expect everyone to agree with it though to each his own.

  4. to each their own . ill pick the one built to perform and yall can pick them by witch way the wind blows. like i said id rather hope for a dog that fits my likings to turn out than to hope for a dog with bow legges and thin hide to turn out

I think your getting way ahead of yourself, I never ever pick a pup with breeding in mind I pick a pup based on the sire and dams performance and past production record. If the Sire and dam are known to produce good dogs with little or no defects I would consider aquiring a pup from said litter but if the sire and dam are known to produce a list of defects like you have mentioned in your above post I would not only walk away but make a suggestion to the owner and breeder of these dogs to discontinue any future breeding plans with said line of dogs. If I were to have a litter with mutants like you have described I would A) Cull the lot and B) consider only an outcross to a like family if I intended to breed either dog again.

I dont care how game a dog is, if it produces horrible defects and huge variations in the litter I dont want anything to do with it, I would rather continue with what I have that is uniform and leave the gambling to the newbies. That being said, when i breed my line of dogs you can pick one blind and it will have all of the qualities that I have seen through the many generations I have bred this family. You only really need to check 1 thing and it sure as hell isn't their health.

  6. good post ngk. in my case i have one of the tightest two eyes females alive, due to how tight she is she has some defects that i wanted to breed out. so i took the best preforming male i have and bred them. If all goes well This will be my foundation. so 1st thing i did is looked for any defects that i dont want to linger around in my line for years to come. i know both parents are good hard working animals and im hoping they will produce the same. i will be breeding one of the 4females back to my male and the culling process will be strict 1 or the 5 is not even a question and the rest will just be a matter of time befor i can make a choice. i feel that this breeding is the most important one that i will be faced with since this will be my foundation for years to come. for me my main concern is to weed out any defects that the parents have ( all dogs have some type of defect whether mild or drastic) next will be to find the best out of the non defected pups. defected in my eyes might not be defected to you. I can name a list of defects of everydog i have owned. whether it be structure of lack of drive or what ever it is. you can correct on something always. who knows maybe my method sucks but only time will tell. but there will be no random picking here. i will keep them all and make a choice on something concrete and not just a guess . but hey maybe you dont have the time or space to keep and cull a litter.

I have kept every pup I have bred in the last 16 years other than a couple my friend kept due to a puppy deal in a joint breeding we made. I have just recently partnered up with another kennel due to health issues otherwise id still have the whole lot, shit happens. It sounds like you are doing the right thing and I wish you the best in your future endevors.

Well said True Culling. pups are much to young to be able to say if they'll be worth anything once grown but you can at that age weed out obvious health problems.

  9. What do you guys mean thin and thick hide in a dog?

Part of breeding and picking pups is also culling pups at times, I'll kill 2 birds with 1 stone and answer CaptainRons question at the same time, TRUE CULLING has thick skin, elifan has thin skin.

Thank's for you insight douche, but killing dog's is not legal and talking about doing it isn't wise on a public forum and no shit culling is a part of breeding, the difference between dogman and dogfan is dogman do there shit behind closed doors and keep there mouth shut and dogfans talk on a public forum about game testing dogs and pluging the pieces of shit.To many dumbasses talking about shit

  15. Says who that dogmans need to do there shit behind closed doors? That's just your opinion. You sound like a dogwoman whining about piece of broken candy.

I probably contribute more than I help. lol I'm with you on the green stuff but I'd rather walk than be in foreign car. I average less than a couple of miles a day in my ole truck. Never gave no thought as to any kind of filters on the wood stove in the cabin. Do have screens on the windows though. They filter out the big stuff. lol On the pups just pic one. Its mostly luck. If you can be around and watch them and pick one several months old your chances should be greater but it still depends on a lot of things. Pick one and hope for the best.

It is illegal and if you are going to do it don't tell anyone just do it and go about you're buisness unless to you culling means altering the dogs so they can't reproduce and placing them in pet homes lol.
