pesticide cattle tags

Anyone here used them cattle tags with pesticides on them for their dog? I heard they can be used and saw a video of a dog with a tag on the collar. Also heard some people cut them in half. Wondering if they work any good to keep mosquitoes off a dog.

Personally I've never heard of em before, this is the first time.
I did a quick google search for "pesticide cattle tags" and I found a government website about them used on horse halters:
"The Use of Insecticide-Impregnated Cattle Ear Tagson the Halters of Horses

Insecticide-impregnated ear tags were first registered in Canada in the late 1970s and are used on cattle for the control of face flies and horn flies. For cattle, very small amounts of active ingredient (less than 2 g) are released onto the animal in a season. The insecticide is transferred onto the back and flanks through natural grooming behaviour as a result of the fat solubility of the insecticide and its ability to migrate through the lanolin in the hair.
    [...]
The ear tags are slow release, so the chemical will eventually coat the halter and much of the animal through grooming. The product labels for the six different brands of ear tags recommend that you wear chemical-resistant gloves for protection when applying and handling the tags. The ear tags attached to the halters of horses could provide a chemical-exposure problem for human handlers, if they are grooming and riding their horses regularly.
    [...]
The attachment of cattle insecticide ear tags to the halters of horses, while occasionally done, is not generally recommended because:

    • Use of cattle ear tags on horses is an off-label use.
    • There are potential human health concerns from contact with the organophosphate ear tags."

Hope this helps. Although it's talking about horses, I would imagine it would have the same effect as sticking it on the dog's collar. Unfortunately, it says nothing about protecting the animal from mosquitoes... but I do know you can buy rubber bracelets impregnated with mosquito repellant from just about anywhere that you could probably loop on the dog's collar.
I would be worried about the dog getting a hold of the tag in his mouth, if anything.

We use em. On the chain dogs we put em on their collars. We nail or strap em to the kennels.

Yeah I think that's what they were talking about too (personally I've never even heard of them before. I didn't even know those ear tags on cattle were to keep bugs away from their faces)

We have used them for the last 5 years. I have 2 buddies, one in Illinois and the other in Oklahoma who use them also. We both zip tie and rivet them to collars.

  13. The tags work ok by themself but if you use them in conjunction with something else there even better....i'd also put ceader shavings in the dog house that will help to

I've used them and they work great. One tag will cover the whole dog; just zip tie it to the collar and out of reach from their mouth. I had a bitch eat one. Luckily, no problems occurred.

You can also mix in Sevin with cedar shavings for bedding, use fly predators, Bronco Spray, or DE to keep insects at bay.

Bump....Who uses cattle tags and what brand do you use? Thinking about adding this in my routine as a preventative. Saw a few different kinds at TSC and didn't know which one to get. Thanks.

And peon brought up "Fly predators", I've heard good things about that product as well and was considering ordering some and trying them out. If some of you use it, where do you order from?

^^^NM, I think they come from manufacturer anyway no matter who it's ordered through.

I tried the cattle tags one Summer and cut them all off. They didn't do much. I went back to applying my usual, and for the past ten years or so, I've used Bayer and now Dominion tree and shrub. Applied correctly, it works great. T.
