Game bred is APBT (the only PIT BULL), show bred is AmStaff, and a totally different thing (mixed breed, whole new breed, badly breed dogs, depends on your opinion) is the AmBully... that's what I think.

New to the forum, but love the topic. This is what I've gathered -- keep in mind, my grandfather's father, my grandfather, my dad and I have all had pitbulls -- whatever the hell it means.

The Staffordshire Terrier isn't always a pitbull. The American Stafforshire isn't always a pitbull. The American Pitbull isn't always a pitbull either. The only true pitbulls are game-dogs. If the bloodline was bred for game and not show, regardless of the bully breed, it is a pitbull.

As such, there are staffies and am staffs and am pits that are pitbulls, but -- again -- not all am pits and am staffs and staffies are pitbulls.

Like I said, these semantics are still a mystery to me, but this is what I've gathered about the modern definition of a pitbull.

When I have this discussion with my Dad his answer is, "knock off the bullshit and take a look. Is the dog game or cur?" Of course I respond, "I've seen a few game labs." And of course I get the, "Je$u$ Chr!$^, eat your dessert."

If that's the case, can you have a an American Pitbull without having papers? Or is it just a pitbull... a game dog

My grandfather, father, great uncles, cousins, brothers and myself had these dogs for many decades and generations.
My mom's mother, her sister and brother-in-law had the last son of Beanie McCoy and Burwell's Jeb.
As one who's family came from the mountains of TN.
I know many didn't care about papers they couldn't read.
Besides we never seen a dog which knew how to read anyway. :)

As one who knows what a real "pit dog" is, I also know what a game bred dog is.

One has to remember a lot of different breeds were used in dog fighting.
Watch Walt Disney's movie "Nicky Wild Dog of the North" where in the North they were fighting Alaskan Malamutes in the pit.

"Papers don't make the dog, dog makes the papers"---Joe Corvino
Papers don't make a dog "pure bred" nor does it automatically make it a "pit dog".
Dogs without papers don't excluded them from it neither.
"Only way to know if that dog can hunt son is to hunt it!"
From my experience # 4 # no other breed or wannabes with alike breeds can stand with a true APBT.
BTW no one use to use the term pit bull.
We always just called them "bulldogs" or "pit dogs".
And no, no one in the sport back before 1980 did dogmen use the term "gamedogs".
This was used for hunting dogs.

Now if you got dogs without papers or is questionable because of size or conformation,
there is now DNA breed testing to show if it is pure bred or not.

    Yeah, they will ask you what it is and then say, "oh, well it doesn't look like a pitbull" ??? Well, if you already know so much, then why the hell did you have to ask? You obviously couldn't tell a pit bull from your ass if you don't think this is one LOL That is usually quickly followed up with "my brother/uncle/cousin/whatever has one that weighs 900 lbs..." :{

  14. Hey guys i just want to point out first and foremost, that i am only on this site because i am a true fan of game-bred pitbulls. Redboy, Jocko, Jeep, Chinaman, Mayday, Zebo and Colby(along with others) all inspire everyone in the dog world. That said, Pitbulls are NOT a breed, they are seperate breeds within one type (based on appearance). The American Pitbull Terrier is just an American offshoot of The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, The American Staffordshire Terrier is the show weighted version of the original APBT that through generations has gained clear genetic differences (alleles, gametes etc.) The American Bully began as a simple cross between the Amstaff and the APBT. Try it yourself. you mix the two you get a WORKING bully. I agree that "pig-dogs" are undesireable, but understand that they are mutants of what was a larger version of the Pit (not fat, simply taller and stronger). Bullies were created to weight pull large amounts (believe me, more weight equals more muscle mass equals greater amount pulled). The BULLy like all breeds within the PITBULL type, suffers through the same tough guy bullshit and BSL all the rest do. So basically, RELAX.
