Curious to hear peoples opinions on this topic if it were before 1976. I have heard things like there is no need because dogs bite hard because they want to, or you need to improve the muscle stamina in their jaws. Don't think the topic has been discussed on here so I thought it'd be a fun one

Bite work such as flirt pole and spring pole work are definitely beneficial in a keep. If not for the benefit of the dogs bite, then there is mass benefit in shaping other important physical attributes. Flirt pole may help things such as speed, stamina, visual acuity and mental focus, while spring pole strengthens and works the rear end, abdomen, and loin.

@ Dream Pits: Yes, I know what you mean. I recall a chapter from a book by George C. Armitage where he says he doesn't believe in training the bite of your dog by using flirtpoles and springpoles. He claims a dog has a strong bite or hasn't got one, and that bit of training won't make him a hard biter anyway. He also had bad experiences with flirt poles, as dogs often make wrong turns while working the flirt pole, which would lead to injuries.

I believe that wat he says, makes sense. However, when you have a soft biter, every bit of training on that aspect could turn out in your benefit when the time comes he has to show his worth. I just wouldn't look at it as a way to turn a soft mouth into a hard mouth.

I do spring pole for mouth work plus helping my dogs teeth in good shape. I use nylon rope or cows skin. ;)

if you are speaking of a "real" keep, not the pretend kind (i'm getting my dog in shape for the next adba skinny dog contest) where one actually has to make a weight and date, bite work is at best overrated and at worst a good way to ensure the demise of your dog.
without getting into specifics all i'll say is letting your dog work a hide or something similar will just about guarantee you will peak your dog too soon and his best days will be "left in the gym".
the biggest mistake most newbies, and many veteran dogmen make (the majority of dogmen aren't too bright, otherwise they would choose another hobby) is to overwork their dog.
in other words i would hope my opponent was working their charge every day on the spring pole as it would give my dog a huge advantage.

they can or they cant is what it comes down to. im sure a boxer with his back aginest the wall will punch harder then working the bag in the gym. as long as the powere is there in the 12th as it was in the 1st your good to go.

It all depends on the dog, intensity of the work, purpose and duration.

For something like the springpole I wouldn't focus as much as trying to improve bite strength or work a dog for hours on end on one (mostly because I dont feel like you'd gain too much from that but it can be very useful in other ways. Its good for a backend, torso workout and to help the dog manage recovery while staying in hold. Can always be used a short reward for he dog after working.

Like with any workout overdoing it or improper use will mess your charge up.

I have the funny vibe that this type of bite work isn't exactly what dream had in mind. If I'm wrong that I apologize, but if I'm right......I would take these answers and run with em dream! Than beg the next mod u come across to shut this thread down. LoL

I was just curious from a historical point of view. Anyone that knows me knows I don't do anything illegal with my dogs and I kno this forum doesn't support any illegal acts. This is merely for entertainment and conversational purposes.

to bite hard and to bite hard and hold i would think are two different things you could improve on.

you cannot improve a dog's ability to bite....but you certainly can take it away.

I agree 100% benthere. Also a friend of mine always says the one that bites last bites hardest. I like that saying.

so ur tellin me there is no way whatsover to help a dog be able to bite harder or hold it longer? i beg to differ.

What they are saying is, there is no point. If the dog has the will to bite to kill... it will do so.
And exercising your dogs jaw muscles isnt going to give it that ability or will.

I know a guy who said he's got a keep that will take a dog with a 6 mouth and make it a 10. He's got lots more money than brains.

Keep hold longer as in stamina possibly but make it bite harder no, not in my opinion. Personally I feel like the biggest benefits you'll get from it is talking to the dog while it works, possibly teach it to take spots and get use to you handling it while in hold and so the dog learns to breathe/recover efficiently while keeping its hold. Two things very important when out hunting (actual hunting no psuedo bullshit) then of course there are the physical benefits as its a great backend and midsection work out when used properly

so theres such thing as enough power behind a bite, its just how long they can hold it? no reason to help them bite harder if they bite .. hard enough. just seems like if you could record the lbs per square inch right off the chain, then put them through a keep with a lot of springpole work as well, literally, they could bite harder.

it takes away from the dogs mouth. i always think about R. Lemm when ever this topic comes up. their is no reason to do so IMO. its just a waste of time. it wasn't the barnstormers that won the match most of the time it was the ones who were conditioned for the long run. the barnstormers i bet were excitting though lol, but i would say no historically speaking and would call it a waste of time. if used for a ADBA or AADR show i think it will shape up the dog for that type of show, but functionally it takes away from the dog. i would think of it as a body builder lifting heavy weights. he is going to very strong and powerful, but the endurance is not going to be there in the long run. i dont care if the dog can hang on the hide for 30+ minutes becasue the hide doesn't bite back lol and he could just be holding it more than actually biting it....it has its goods i just really like R/L and think of his words pretty high with conditioning historically, so on my side id have to say no. there is a way to find out though, whos willing to go to jail? lol..... id pass on the finding out part over here..

Its easy to see who knows what they are talking about here. Me,personally have never used springpole in a keep for mouth. A bit for backend but thats it. Like someone already said,if it will bite it will
