I think a bear would shit its pants if it were to encounter this thing when fully mature...that dog in the video is only a puppy at 1 yr old..physically grown at 3 yrs old. He will def be a beast and a force to be reckoned with when mature and fully grown.

Are they good at guarding the house/dogs or more personal protection?

steeldog... I got a pic of a filas that make most bulldogs look muscle less.
cliffdog...they will tear anything up that comes near them, their house or anything that lives in it or around it...that could be the couch or other dogs it doesnt matter to the fila. If the Fila considers it "theirs" then nothing will stop it from protecting it.

BTW Filas are usually way more protective on their property which is why TTs are done far off property.

  12. I've recently gotten pretty interested in the Fila breed. This was this dog's first session?
I'd like to see one of these dogs take some real pressure. Just to see if they stick in the fight and how they respond to it.

Yes, first ever and only one year old...how much pressure would you put on a green dog exactly...as you can see that pup would def bite...would he be as committed as a dog that has years of bite work under him??? probably not but how many people's house get broken into by professional decoys with full bite suits on??? trust me you get bit once or twice by any big dog and your not going to care how many years of bite work he has had, lol. all you prey for is that he takes whatever part he has in his mouth, is happy with it and the rest of you can escape. Seriously though Filas come in various temp levels...this one is pretty tough especially for a pup...wait til any fila like this one gets to 3 yrs old...there is no backing them up no matter what..the confidence level grows with maturity, some have very good temp some weaker ones..I have seen balls off the walls filas that will have no qualms about finishing a man in mere minutes and I have seen a few that are content to bite you until you stop coming...both are affective one is a major law suit...I am responsible enough so I like the hardcore ones and breed for it..there are plenty of breeders that breed for the other ones...im not one of them. to me it is like this...do you want a super drivey very gamey bulldog or one thats not drivey or gamey so you can handle him easier and wont get into fights??? petbull owners love easily handled dogs... CAFIB dogs are for real dogmen, leave those 200lb black hippos for the dog park crew...JMO nothing against the other type.

  14. The amount of pressure any dog (not just a green dog) can take depends on the individual dog, which is why training is catered to individuals and isn't the same for every single dog. It could be anything from a whip, to a baton, to a reed stick. It could be the decoy not backing away so quickly after the bite but continuing to challenge and fight the dog. It can be simple body language from the decoy that creates more pressure for a dog.

I was speaking in pretty general terms when I said I would like to see one of these dogs take some pressure. It's not something I have seen yet, and that doesn't mean that it doesn't happen or that these dogs can't take it. I simply like dogs that not only have the drive to do the work but also have the balls and the grit to back it up. How a dog takes pressure and the amount of pressure they can take is something I consider in every dog.

As for green dogs, my American Bulldog took more pressure at his first bitework session when he was 8 months old than many dogs ever see in their careers. I have also seen dogs with many years under their belts in protection work not know how to deal with it when some serious heat is thrown at them. So the ability to handle pressure has little to do with a dog's experience in bite work, unless of course they have slowly and steadily been taught to deal with increasing pressure because something about them suggested they wouldn't be able to handle it any other way.

FP, 100% correct. just remember this isnt a "session" this is meant as a test to see if the dog has the proper temperament not to see if they are suited for bite work...Filas are notoriously not good for that. As you know most trainers rely on mostly prey drive for a successful bite work session. Filas are mostly defense driven (although this one has a decent amount of prey) because of this you will be hard pressed to even find a trainer to take on a fila let along being successful with the fila moving through the ranks...faced with a threat they immediately and without direction lunge to face it, I have never heard of anyone being successful in un-training this (although I am sure it is possible). there is no "on" and no "off" with them in the common sense...they are off when the threat is not their and instinctively on when the threat arises. not good for traditional bite work. BTW, in a CAFIB show, if the judge believes that the dog has had training or has been conditioned for bite work the dog is automatically disqualified and papers pulled...the point is to show instinctive protection not trained...the dog is being evaluated not the training methods. here is a video of the mother when she was about 2 yrs old...1st time temperament test...this is not a bite work session. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA-TpLrMBd8
