Bad infection and abscess on neck

My Westie currently has an abscess on his neck from when him and Beau got into a really bad fight. It's the size of a tennis ball, I was out of state when this happened, I just got home Monday from out of state. My mom said she didn't notice it until when I got back. So far I've shaved the area and scrubbed it with warm water and sea salt. It started to drain infection as soon as I shaved the area. There is also bruising and several puncture holes. But only one is badly infected but it's the abscess, I'm worried about.

He has a vet appointment at 10 am tomorrow, but I'm worried because we literally have no money right now, I know my vet does do payments which helps. And I'm going to see if we can qualify for care credit. But I'm still worried.

He's also not eating much either, so far the only things we can get him to eat are lunch meats and beggin strips. So I'm thinking some nice smelly wet food will solve that easy.

So any ideas of what I can do and what the vet might recommend?

I'm glad you have a vet that will work with you.
Him not eating says to me the infection is set in good.
The vet will lance it maybe put a drain in and antibiotics.
Keep the appt.

How long ago was the fight?Is he drinking?

The fight lasted I wanna say from what my mother told me was a good 5 minutes before they could pull Beau off of him. Beau as you can see tore him up pretty good, his head has a few puncture wounds and gashes as does the other side of his neck.

He is drinking when offered water, and he will eat smelly tasty food, just not his dry dog food even when mixed with eggs.

yeah, he needs to get that lanced and be put on some antibiotics. a bite wound that's abscessed like that needs definite medical attention.

 

if you dont got the mony you need to open the bite make a hole whit a needle or someting just try what fine for you, keep on pushesing on the infecktion till all come out.. washe it whit half warm water.. and make it steril whit alcohol or some steril stuff...

try to find out what ar nature antibiotics and give him that if you got a little money get you some antibiotics realy importand.

you need to open the wound again empty it tills its gone..
its not fun att all but the dog needs it i think.

take a syringe and stick the knot where the tooth went in . draw out the infection and take a new syringe and fill up the pocket with cut n heal . this will clean it good . then get antibiotics from the feed store will work . good luck . don't let the dogs back together or it will happen again .

 

Yeah I agree with you also...lance it or use a syringe to drain it out...keep the cut clean with Betadine solution and get the dog on a course of Amoxi for 10-15 days.

So I haven't been able to get him to the vet yet, our car broke down, so he goes to the vet Monday, but while I was giving him a bath, I felt some scabbing on his back. I thought that maybe Beau had gotten him there as well, so I shaved him and found out his allergies are worse then I thought



Also so everyone knows, the two dogs have been on crate and rotate for the last three years and this fight was the result of a slip up on the crate and rotate. Normally these two don't even see each other at all. But accidents happen....and this is proof that it can happen with ANY breed of dog not just Bulldogs.

 

sweet girl your doing your best . we know it was a accident . but be very carefuls because it may happen again and you need to be ready to get them loose . always have a plan and let everyone in the house know what your going to do to get the loose . always have the breaks sticks ready . the dog will be fine but you need the syringe to drain it . you can get cut n heal or something like it at the feed store if you can get a ride . they have the syringe to . good luck

 

tomorrow if ur not able to afford ur vet go by ur local feed store they should carry over the counter cycline which on average run about 16 bucks needles @ a dollar to each thier own but i adminster atleast one of the treatments in or as close to the wound as possible and i wouldnt try to squzze the infection out let it drain after its lanced run the cycline cycle and try to keep the wound as clean as possible u can use an aloe vera plant by putting some of the paste into the holes to help with the healing of the holes try to get ur dog to eat before giving the cycline it can b hard on their stomach i'd boil a drum stick or leg quater and serve it with a lil of the brooth in a bowl save some of the brooth for the next time u feed and try to give him regular dog fod with the brooth warmed up a bit oh and i'd give the rest of the cycline cycle in ur dogs shoulder closest to the wound by it being on his neck

 

I'm going to head to TSC tomorrow and pick up the stuff to drain it myself and some antibiotics, maybe this will save me a vet visit Monday. But I'm thinking I should still go to the vet Monday, just in case.

one of my dogs got in a scrap a few mos. back and had the same exact thing,it looks worse then it is.as long as the dog is still eating/drinking i wouldn't worry to much. just keep it clean and put a damp hot rag on it a few times a day.

 

if u decide to drain it ur self and get the antibotics just monitor it if it dont show signs of healing then visit ur vet
