I have had 2 different dogs snatch birds right out of the air(robins), one has done it twice. This is in addition to a gopher, a few rabbits, and moles that are unaware enough to venture inside the fence(a few cats have barely escaped a certain end by scrambling up a tree - do they count as small game?:D j/k I like cats actually). But no, I don't purposely hunt anything. It took along time for them to get the gopher for some reason - a mole will be dug up and gone in no time, but they were digging around for the gopher for over a week.

  7. From rabbits, coons, and foxes. My bulldogs have grab them all with no problem and we had one even snatch up a coyote and a turkey once. Short order bulldoggin. We purposely hunt, we have had one with a good nose and the rest are prey driven dogs. To bad they can't go into hunting packs, a pack of 3 bulldogs could be an awesome combination. Coon hunting can be hard though when you are doing it like a coondog but if you know where they are say old barn, house, or certain area these dogs go fastlane and it is a blast for us both and legal too.

Would an APBT be able to catch a fox speed wise? I know they'd make bits of him if they caught him (My Dads JRT killed a few foxes when he was my age)

Deebo780- get a live trap and catch ya some critters, let the dog check it out. If he'll hunt you'll know it by his reaction. Take the trap out in a field, open it up and give the critter a head start then let your dog run it. After that he should be hellbent on hunting critters.
You can skin it and use the fur/hide on a flirtpole to keep it fresh on his mind.

Thats funny you say that cuz I do the same thing. Its fun to see one or two dogs put the run on a coon. Mine loves doin that.

  14. My Akita catches birds mid air when outside, dives into brush head first and will come out with a bird in her mouth, when inside she treats small house animals gently. Smart dog. I don't actually hunt with her or anything (she would have been worked as a hunting dog but she has the very typical Akita trait of an absolutely unreliable recall when outside even though she is unfailing obedient at all other times), she just has the instinct to hunt naturally - the breed was used to hunt bear and other game.

Introducing them to prey is good but for most it is pretty instinctual, I had a female take off a 150 yards in the dark down to the creek this fall and go to work on a coon. I have taken her out though her whole life and cut her loose on anything we could come up with, just be weary of those bastards with the quills that's a battle that has no winners...

As well as skunks & bobcats. Rabbits are the prize imo they offer the greatest challenge.

I have taken a young dog or two and let them fight a coon leash the hounds shoot the coon out alive and let them fight it some are pretty good after the bulldog gets a little age on them no contest not as fun.
