How do I get my dog to stop biting?

Discussion in 'Training & Behavior' started by BT8, Dec 26, 2010.

  1. Smack em hard on the ass. Ass beatings are for when they're older.

    My pup is fearful right now of being approached by strangers head on (when they go over head with their hand to pet) so hitting her would only compound the problem. I just snap my fingers and put my hand out (like a stop motion) in front of her face. It works for her. Loud noise with a firm "no" or whatever you prefer works.

    When my APBT was a pup I told him no and walked away (like went to my room or something) and then would come back after a minute or so to resume playing. It took a while before he caught on, to be honest.

    All u have to do is put ur hand in such a way so that the pup can't bite it and they usually just lick u instead. Example: a fist can't fit in they pups mouth so they'll just lick u instead. And if that doesn't work pop that lil fuck in his fuckin face!!!!! Jk

    I know this thread "may" be on the verge of getting old, but I'll throw my hat in as well:

    When my girl starts to get out of hand (she's NEVER bitten) I just do like I figure an Alpha figure in her pack would do---I stand up tall, stare her straight in the face, tell her NO!!! in a really gruff voice. She instantly puts herself in low gear and slips off a few feet from me. She just got put in her place and she knows it.

    She's just over a year now, and all I have to do now is make eye-contact with a stern look and she immediately stops whatever she's doing and awaits her instructions.

    But then, she's a great natured dog for the most part too......;)

  6. The "NO" and the "smaking" does work, but it´s not the only way to do it. Everything you train with a dog, you can do with "negative reinforcement", or with "positive reinforcement" (or a combination of both of course). It´s only a matter of how you want to work, and what are you training the dog for.
    Also keep in mind that young dogs will always bite stuff until they come to a certain age.
    If you don´t want to hit him, here are a couple things you can do:
    - everytime he bites you, say "no", get your hands away and stop playing with him;
    - if he backs off and stops with the biting, praise him and go back to playing.
    or
    - everytime he bites you, take your hand away and give him some kind of toy for him to bite;
    - if he drops the toy and comes back to you, play with him again;
    - if he starts to bite again, do the same... hands away and give toy.

    he´ll make the connection real quick.... "if I bite I don´t play"... "if I don´t bite I get praises"... "I can bite my toy", etc....

    What I usually start with is a loud ''OUCH'' and walk away. Some pups clue into that right off the bat, once you figure out how loud the ouch has to be for that particular pup. If that doesn't work, like say the pup just follows and chews on you some more, lol, I usually turn to redirection. I just remove them from whatever they are biting with a matter of fact ''No!'' and stick a toy in their mouth, encouraging them to bite that saying ''Get the toy!'' When they do, I give them huge praise and a nice tug game. As time goes by, it becomes a useful tool as even as adults, I can still use the ''Get the toy.'' to redirect their attention when needed.

    I dont know what type of dog you people who hit your dog on the arse had but i own APBT , and no matter how hard i hit any of my dogs on the arse they look at me and ask for more. Its a reward if you ask me. I had a 30 pound bitch that loved nothing more than a spanking as hard as i possibly could. It was no punishment.

    A stern voice with a light nose thap does the trick and by the time its grown it should just react to the voice.

    Or....just pretend like Zoe has said that it is hurting you , i conditioned a dog to do this and even to the day she will cease all play if she touches me hard with any ivory at all, allmost to an overkill as she wont razz up again for awhile after as she has been taught that ivory contact is wrong. Made her bulletproff with kids too.

    If you must be physical about it use a remote shock collar if not your dog could end up lookin like a rolled up curr every time someone raises there hand around it the shock collar everytime it miss behaves will put a stop to it real quick and the dog don't have a clue who done it just that that behavior ends whith a jolt lol...

    This is a cook cutter answer that covers most individuals within the breed but not all individuals within the breed. Some of these dogs are social climbers or vary dominant minded and gental corections will not always do the trick. Some need a good pop to the dome to get the point. If you don't believe this you ain't ben around many dogs.

    My first dog i ever had was a English Bull Terrier from Brazil. I recieved the dog and was pretty rough with it. I was young and didnt know better. I would take my hands and act like it was a mouth of a dog and clinch the Bull Terriers head with it and thats how I would play with it. I pushed it arround and he got to a point were he couldnt distinguish between me playing or not. He turned into a man bitter OF COURSE. It is important to to have respect for the breed that you own. I have gotten into APBT's and i look back at what i did wrong with that dog and compair with the APBT'S today that i own which is a whole lot better of a dog. A breed as powerful as the APBT needs alot of respect from its owner. My dogs not a punk by far, but he is mentally stable. If you play rough with the dog its gonna play rough back with you. STOP THAT IMMEDIATELY! DONT EVER PUT YOUR HANDS IN HIS/HER MOUTH TO LET THEM LICK OR CHEW BECAUSE THEY WILL CONSIDER YOU A TOY! it doesnt take a scientist to understand these things just experience. I dont play rough with my dog because of his strenght and if it were to come down to it he would definantlly hurt me. Have respect for the dog and it will respect you. To each there own, but i aslo never play tug of war with the dog with me holding the other end. THE rope is attached to the dogs teeth and the owner holding it ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN if you ask me and agian I dont ever want him to think he can rough play with me. Hang it up and if he wants to hang on a spring pole then let it be between him and the tree LOL... Stop what you are doing wrong and have you dog learn simple obedience and whenever he bites (nibbles on you) refrane from petting him and say no! If he/she insist again on doing it yell out No! loud and put him in the crate or outside. try a combination of these things and refraining from the rough plalying and keeping hands out of the dogs mouth and these things should work. also a lot of toys if its an inside dog which it sounds like to me.... HAVE FUN! and a little swat will never hurt either just be aware that the dog will be more sensitive to a good yelling than a hit.

    OHH YEAH another thing is exercise it sounds like you dont exercise him/her enough. Exercise does wonders for behavior problems. You said he is 10 weeks i believe. take him for a long walk dont be scarred you wont hurt him and see how far he can go. At about 3-4 months i was walking my pup a mile lol truthfully. He is a year and i boosted it up to roughly 3-5 miles on the bike and sometimes i push him at 6 by bike. I do this just because i enter him in shows. But all shit to the side exercise! exercise! exercise at the least for the dogs sake. THIS BREED OF DOG IS NOT FOR THE LAZY BY FAR.... Try all of these tips, but i will guarantee that exercise will do the job. YOu will see after a good mile walk that pup aint gonna know what to do but sleep and it wil benefit him and you. Exercise is key for both mind and body of humans and animals................... I should charge you for all this just give me your debit card #, expiration date and the 3digit code in the back and we can call it even.....seriously
