I thinks its a combonation of things, the negative press they are getting and the introduction of the american bully the so called designer pit bull..

The less popular the GB APBT become the better it is for the breed and it's owners.
The more popular the blues become the better it is for the GB APBT
The quality of the GB APBT has improved over the years. Maybe not in numbers because of the pettelers but if you take the top 20 in the last 15 years and put them up against the top 20 in 50's and 60's the quality is no better. I have been told this by several hog hunters.

HBK, no disrespect but how is the quality not any better? I mean the quality back then, in my personal opinion, would be better due to breeding proven dogs and less being sold and kept just because they look/ act like a winner. It seems back then they wanted the best and if they were going to keep a bitch for brood stock, they would test her and make her want to quit. If she lasted then they would keep her to breed to.
Now day, we as APBT owners, some not all, breed for the same standards as bully breeders. Before this turns into a shit storm, they breed for color, size, ect. We are breeding for comformation which is a "look" just like they are breeding for a "look". Disagree if you want but how many dogs are proven in your dogs pedigree? Some of the most talked about kennels on here are breeding unproven dogs.

If we are talking about GB APBT I believe it has declined greatly due to the law and neg press.
If we talking about APBT as breed I believe the popularity and #'s gone up. Due to there are more activity for them to due(conformation/weight pull...ects...) and the price for a APBT varies so much as from adoption/(free)/$$$$...it is also easier for BYB/peddler to advertise for sale(internet world wide) pups/dogs.
    Just my 2 cent!

I strongly dislike this sites "no edit" feature.
    I may have been confusing.
In a nut shell the quality of the APBT by those who have stayed true to the breed is BETTER than it was 30 years ago. There are many reasons why this is so. The ultimate goal of a breeder (in theory) is to produce better animals. Most now have the benifit of not only learing by others mistakes but also learing by what was done positive as well. Many of the old timers (not all ) were stuck in there ways and continued doing stupid things year after year. There are many examples of this in the books and articles. There are smart new-comers who saw these errors and took breeding, schooling, keeps, diet, general health and just plain care for there dogs to new levels. We now have the benifits of knowing the strenghts and weaknesses of said lines not to mention the ability to network, share information and travel to get the blood we want. Many believe that one of the secrets to Carver's sucess was the ability to travel and get the best of the best and put it together. Where is before peole werent able (or willing) to try and do this. I am not saying pettelers havn't hurt the breed but a peddler can also improve the quality of the breed on a great scale if they actually produce good animals and sell them in large quantities. In a way todays APBT owners are standing on the shoulders of giants and we shouldnt forget that. But lets not just continue to stand there on the shoulders, lets take it up a notch and get on top of their head for awhile. Then soon we will be up over their head ! :) Thats where I'm trying to be !

i think too many people now go for the quick purchase and then move on without giving the subject more research. i started with the blue type dog thinking that if it's adba registered then it was legit. 8 yrs later and 5 dogs across, i finally started getting quality dogs. i have to say that the breeders, friends, and mostly the dogs themselves have taught me more than i taught them. you, if unattended have to make many mistakes in order to understand and appreciate what this breed is about. Certainly, i would say it is harder to find mentors and true friends to the breed than i think it was 20 years ago but i definitely think they are still out there. i can say that the first dog i had 8 yrs ago can't hold a penny to the ones that are at the end of my leash now. and i still have so much to go but this breed and its examples of heart and determination help me in keep that fire in my daily life. the eager students will never quit, the rest..... who cares about them?

Too many idiots are getting the bulldawgs and breeding indiscriminately without thought to what made them great.

I've been around this breed since '79 and what bothers me today are the watered-down versions of pedigrees.

Many dawgmen/women would turn over in their graves if they were alive today if they saw the breeding that takes place. There are few, if any, today who truly know what breeding "Best-To-Best," and forming new strains of the old lines through careful planning.

And those that do know how to breed simply leave the idiots alone and don't have the time of day to talk dawgs, let alone try to make sense to them!

    STAY SAFE!

Same thing happened with the original English Bulldog, English Mastiff and Boston Terrier.

Dog fighting is illegal(and should be) And breeders will give their clients what they want: a dog thats all show, who cares about the go.

Mis-information also has something to do with it. Many people think that bullies are real APBTs because those individuals who are selling dogs for living advertised it as pure pitbulls. Likewise, those show organizers who promotes Pitbull Show are more inclined with bullies and blue dogs. It has become a new trend, that's why many people instead of adopting the real APBTs in the shelters, they tend to buy the show-looking bully or the blue dog (lowered, wider body and with massive head). I came across with some individuals and they thought that my game-bred APBT was not, and the bully ones were the real. In addition, because of the Animal Welfare Law, Dogmen and breeders of gamebred APBTs went into underground years back. It's really sad :(

if the american bully and other mixes has contributed to the decline and that if it has, then thats a good thing as its people like that we could do without "leave the real dogs to the real dogmen"

"Game-bred" seems to be the new blue from a lot of posts I see. Not being in the US I can't say with certainty, but it seems that everyone is hanging out to one day get them a game bred dog. I think the number of people willing to keep the dogs true to their roots are vastly reduced from what they have been in the past so it goes without saying that they will likely decline on average. Some of the best may still stand tall amongst champions of the past, but the average is what counts in my mind and I think the breed average is in decline in terms of a quality bulldog.

Decline? I don't think so. I'm thinking prob about the same, if not better with all the new knowledge of health and nutrition, and all the great workout equipment available (of course it really hasn't changed that much, good diet and good exercise and good competition = good dogs when the best is loosely linebred back to the best.) it's kinda like the army where we may have a much bigger army population but how many are rangers. Or green berets or whatever. If the question is decline in gamebred apbts the two hits to it would be 1976 and the loss of a very visual reporting/recording system but it's my belief there is close to the same amount of gamebred breeders out there, an increase in shit breeder should not be looked at as a decrease in gamebred apbts. 100+ years ago there was no apbt just gamebred dogs and all others. Than you had ukc dogs and adba dogs, then akc dogs , the true gamebred ones were still there regardless. Then you have bfkr, and aadr and others. today there may be bullies stealing the apbt name but they can't steal the gamebred name bc it's named for the game not the conformation,( color size and what have you) plus today we are dealing with the international gamedog not just the amercan gamedog. I liked the bulldog name is earned comment. And bulldog , gamedog, those are more titles than they are names just earned via pedigree.

i own a blue dog here in central cali but mine pit dont have a short musle big head nice chest and big bone 2 me i have a well gamey dog that will give any dog a match. also woant to say something bout the blue bloodlines like dogman said that the camelot blood line mite have some masiff blood in them but if you know the apbt history the have masive blood in them so the masive trait came out more then the bulldog and terrier bloods in there ansitry.

i think in #'s there may be a decline of the GB APBT. in quality, no. i don't believe so. i think if anything, due to all the info that the www presents, its quality has improved, not declined. as far as blues, am bullies, etc. i think more and more people (general public) are finally 'getting it' and realizing the APBT and the Am Bully and blues are, in fact, not "one in the same" but i don't think the reduction in #'s of game breds are due to the infusion nor the introduction of the others. i just think the GB circles are tighter & more select due to too much Big Brother. i do see a future with the GB APBT because there is still too admiration for them. (thankfully).

Mantis, nice thoughts there and well put. The internet has turned out a bunch of internet doggers who have helped pump the media myth and help the infiltration and discrediting of the breed and its true defenders. Yes you can get a lot of info, but you get more getting out and DOING. Sure there was a time the breed was very popular and many people made lots and lots of money-but as it turns out most people who got into the dogs for the wrong reasons have no other choice but to be culled it is the nature of nature. And sure there is damage done to the breed and many good people have suffered most for no real reason other than fear and misunderstanding. I hope the breeds popularity falls to an all time low, and maybe then only people who really want these dogs just for THESE dogs will have them. Look at the poor condition of all dog breed types as they get further from the true sporting nature of the canine, no matter what that sport be or how it manifests itself. Take a look at the poor poor retriever type dogs running rampant on every college campus, or hobble running "off leash" at your local dog park. Bred away from any true sporting standard, and bred to the standard of "Just being" and sorry to all those who think that being is good enough, its not for us and its not for sporting animals.
As for the "Bully" bred dogs, who cares, take a look at the poor Labradoodle, or shipoo or any of the other Frankenstein toy breeds, how long do you think they will be here? In closing I would like to Thank the APBT and all those who have kept it what it was meant to be, from here until forever.
